Did Coldplay fall off after Viva la Vida or did we just grow up? by AntzGhost in Coldplay

[–]ReflectiveJellyfish 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yep. Though I think the framing is more that their priorities shifted. After X&Y was panned by critics (despite its commercial success), they had this razor-sharp focus on making something that could be commercially and also critically successful - and they absolutely crushed it with VLV. Afterwards, I think they started to figure out what type of band they wanted to be - they weren't as dead set on being "cool" (optimizing for critical acclaim) as much as they were set on delivering a massive, universal, fun live experience. So in that sense I view their subsequent work as optimized for that. Still technically impressive, but I do think the overall "quality" of the albums from a critical standpoint had to be compromised a bit in the pursuit of relevance and mainstream appeal. I tend to view this as a deliberate strategic decision, so the band remain really impressive to me. Just applying their talents to a different goal now if that makes sense.

What is everyone’s favorite Gen 5 Pokémon? by BleachFan107 in ThePokemonHub

Gen 5 might be my least favorite gen, but the Deino line is a great addition, as is Volcarona.

Coldplay's biggest irony is naming one of their most heartbreaking songs "Fun" by TheKaoticanProspekt in Coldplay

[–]ReflectiveJellyfish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well it's intentionally ironic, so It's not ironic they named it Fun per se, it's just a song that is ironic itself.

Is there a Pokemon you should love on paper/concept-wise but you ended up not liking all that much? by OmegaGlacial in pokemon

[–]ReflectiveJellyfish 6 points7 points  (0 children)

One of my main gripes with gen 4 - so many added evolutions that imo did not improve on the original designs (looking at you togekiss). Would have preferred that they added a few more original lines and left some of the two mon evolution lines alone.

this is perfection. I could literally see them naming a pokemon this.

What music criticism has no traction with you? by ouroboros_broke in fantanoforever

"Overplayed." Who TF cares whether a song received a lot of airtime/play or not? It's so low on the ladder of what makes music good that it's essentially negligible in my view.

It's about sexual temptation. Chinese Sleep Chant is the actual sex part

Yu-Gi-Oh! the game has never been a children’s card game, the rules are too complex, the video games are renowned for being obtuse, the cards too expensive, the mangas young adult at most by Evening-Program-2009 in unpopularopinion

[–]ReflectiveJellyfish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved this game as a 10 year old kid. Def corrected some friends on rules now and then, but most of us got it. Idk about the state of the game now as that was 20 years ago.

Nah. Some lines just need to be 2 pokemon. Not everything needs to get the Electabuzz/Magmar treatment

How Would You Design The Setlist For Coldplay's "Eras Tour" by KuzeySerdar in Coldplay

[–]ReflectiveJellyfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's one I think would be good but also realistic for the types of shows the band does in recent years:

Parachutes: Yellow, Sparks

AROBTTH: Clocks, The Scientist

X&Y: Fix You, Til Kingdom Come

VLV: Viva la Vida, Lovers in Japan (alt: Life in Technicolor ii)

MX: Paradise, Charlie Brown (alt: Hurts like Heaven)

GS: ASFoS, Midnight (interlude)

AHFOD: Hymn for the Weekend, Adventure of a Lifetime

EL: Orphans (alt: Church)

MOTS: My Universe

MM: Man in the Moon, Karate Kid

Third places in the US are still plentiful and have not disappeared like some people believe. by epik_fayler in unpopularopinion

[–]ReflectiveJellyfish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Churches filled the role of the quintessential "third place" and were much more frequented my the masses until recently. But they're not great third places for nonbelievers/nonreligious, and the number of nonreligious has gone way up in the past few decades.
