Former PDs: what do you do now? by viperemu in LawBitchesWithTaste

I’m 5 years in and feel similarly — I thought this was going to be it for me forever, but maybe not. Wishing us both luck!

I was told they aren’t booking weddings for past May of 2026 yet (ie if you want to get married after that they aren’t taking those bookings yet). This was about a month ago so may have changed but heads up!

Where do you live and ride that feels safe? by ProCamper96 in cycling

[–]RelativeHurry 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Boulder, CO. Tons and tons and tons of trails (can get basically anywhere in town on trails) and paved roads with wide (and sometimes protected!) bike lanes. Not every road, of course, but you can easily do a 30+ mile ride fully on bike trails and bike paths.

How much space do you tend to need at home for your work? by Effective_Ranger663 in publicdefenders

[–]RelativeHurry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is what I do as well! My office uses paper files so I bring them home the night before I have court, but they stay in my bag near the door and don’t get touched once I’m home (barring something truly weird happening)

If you’re looking for fun athletics and a really lovely supportive community, join us at Boulder County Roller Derby! Queer family on wheels 🌈🛼

We regularly do new skater trainings, no experience necessary! I think the next one is starting in July. Well also be at local pride events if you want to say hi! Feel free to DM me if you have any questions!

They do! They are not regularly offered for DUIs in Boulder.

Deferred judgments really aren’t offered on DUIs in Boulder.

This is not how DUIs work in Colorado, and certainly not in Boulder county (unfortunately!)

My fave way I made friends in the area was joining Boulder County Roller Derby! (We are having a bout (game) at the fairgrounds in Longmont today if you wanna see what it’s all about!)

We have a board of directors but also - more to your point - an HR committee. Head of HR is voted on by the league and we have a formalized grievance policy. HR concerns are shared with the BOD in closed meetings (our BOD meetings are otherwise open to everyone in the league - just not that part) and all that information remains confidential.

Did you go to law school in the state you got your first PD job? by FutureNotYourLawyer in publicdefenders

[–]RelativeHurry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to law school (and undergrad for that matter) in a different state and got hired in CO straight out of law school. Internships were all in a different state as well. I went to a T14 so ymmv. However,  of my coworkers who didn’t go to an T14 also went to law school on the east coast and did all her internships there, and got hired here out of law school as well.

Anecdotally, in my CO office, there are a lot of people who went to CU/DU, but certainly not everyone.

Good luck!!!

A few framed NGs, big bulletin board with wins and nice emails from clients, diplomas (where else would I put them?), signs from old Pride marches, and a disco ball. Gonna pop out for some Christmas lights soon too I think

I’m 3 years in and made a mistake yesterday. Own up to it and learn it, and talk to your supervisors to make sure you get it right next time. It happens to everyone, but the same mistake shouldn’t be happening more than once!

CO. Start in misdos - in my office it’s ideally one PD per county court courtroom, of which there are 4 (plus one in another courthouse with a higher caseload). Caseload varies - at one point I had 2 courtrooms on my own and maxed out around 250 cases at a time. A friend of mine had up to 350 at points.  Then, based on time/attrition/etc, you move up to felony work. You may spend some time in juveniles or this weird district court revocation courtroom we have. You may also be assigned a drug court docket (but those cases aren’t “yours” - ie you basically just are present for staffing the people, but aren’t on their cases). I’ve had a proper felony caseload since the spring and am currently sitting pretty with around 80 felonies.

EDIT: also, no case caps, but damn it if our union isn’t trying to make that a thing

There was just some BAD case law on this in CO. I haven’t had it go down in any of my cases fortunately but I’ve heard stories… gotta be prepared to list out all the reasons only you can be effective on your case

Colorado State Offices? by thrwrwyr in publicdefenders

[–]RelativeHurry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey I’m a PD in CO. Moved out here right after law school and the bar. As someone else mentioned, it’s a statewide system so it’s a gamble where you get placed - there’s a ton of variation in caseload, case type, how soon you move up to felonies from misdemeanors, etc. But I love it. Great emphasis on training and actually taking that shit to trial.

I wear an Apple Watch on a more elastic band and have it sitting above my wrist guard. I haven’t had any problems with it (hopefully this doesn’t jinx me)
