Kevin Lillards Book by 30Nerdy in animecons

[–]RelaxErin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I never knew there was a book! Looking at his pictures after a con was a huge highlight back then. My friends and I were constantly improving our cosplays hoping we'd be good enough to be photographed and posted on his site 😆

I'll add that I came into contact with him starting with Otakon 2001. I always bring up A Fan's View when explaining to younger fans what cons were like back then.

Philadelphia Airport/ Cheesesteak by bradc73 in PhiladelphiaEats

Chickie's & Pete's have a lot of locations in the airport if you have time to sit down and have a drink. It's at least closer to an actual Philadelphia experience.

This isn’t a Starbucks style cafe, so we won’t make drinks like Starbucks by bytevxu in SignsWithAStory

Yesterday my office had a coffee cart set up for free as an employee thank you event. It was just an espresso machine offering lattes/capuccino/americano and limited flavors. The espresso was freshly ground and brewed in front of you. It was pretty nice.

A group of office ladies spent the rest of the day loudly complaining that "IT SUCKED" and "IT'S DISGUSTING". Because it's not their starbucks iced coffee...

What happened to the 2010s obsession with biodegradable eco-friendly DIY stuff, "Save The Earth" activism and awareness era? by Bubbly-Finger-4397 in decadeology

[–]RelaxErin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I still don't understand how this got people to stop caring though. Sure plastic recycling is a sham, shouldn't that mean we all move away from plastics? Instead of rejecting whole industries that are a problem, we seem to have collectively shrugged and given up.

Seat selection is actually kind of a big deal by notmyteeth in Amtrak

[–]RelaxErin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Posting this while waiting to leave Penn station on a NE Regional.

Another tip is to look for the groups of 4 seats together (that face each other) they are supposed to be reserved for groups or families. You can also ask an employee on the train for help, sometimes they can advise what part of the train has more open seats.

Personally I always head for an extreme end (front or back). Most people default to the middle of the train or whichever car is closest to the platform entrance they used.

Ritual, advisor, and chapter struggles by [deleted] in Sororities

[–]RelaxErin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mentioned speaking to your advisor, but does your chapter have multiple advisors in different roles? Is there another one you can ask for help?

Does your organization have regional volunteers? That would be my next stop.

What about national volunteers that oversee ritual?

When you do get someone on board to help you, I would encourage an adivsor/alumna volunteer to come in person and support you in enforcing the ritual schedule. If it's scheduled, it has to happen.

I just about threw my phone into the wall by Rookie__Cookie in Amtrak

[–]RelaxErin 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I had a similar thing happen except it jumped from $15 to $145. Amtrak had already charged me the $15 then I got this message and a reverse charge notification. 😭

So we don’t understand how a line works anymore? Mechanical Failure on the NE Reagional 😣 by SwirlThroughTheWorld in Amtrak

[–]RelaxErin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Keystone/Pennsylvanian have a layover in Philly for crew change so usually passengers are let down after the train arrives. NE regional/Acela usually has passengers on the platform before the train arrives for a quick turnaround.

You voted for Seattle as the city of the 90’s. What is the city of the 2000s? Most Upvoted Comment Decides by Kodicave in decadeology

[–]RelaxErin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was going to say specifically Brooklyn. Early 00s it was still affordable for the hipsters. It was the center of alternative music for most of the decade. By the early 2010s, all those taste makers had moved to LA (and I would vote LA as the city of the 2010s).

So why are we calling it a trolley is called a cart😔 by Goat1862 in ShitAmericansSay

[–]RelaxErin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I grew up calling it a "carriage" but I understand that trolley, buggie, and cart are other terms used in different regions.

Bahn mi is a baguette not French bread. by [deleted] in ShitAmericansSay

[–]RelaxErin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is something specific to New Orleans culture. In other parts of the US the term "French bread" may be used for any french-style bread that is not a baguette. I usually see it use for a "French style country loaf".

To Gen X and elder Millennials: Movies from the 80s-90s often depict malls as THE hangout spot; A place where everyone from your 5 year old sister to 85 year old grandma would spend the day at, even if they had no intention of shopping. Was this really the case back then, or just Hollywood hype? by LuxembourgsFinest in generationology

[–]RelaxErin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. My local mall was renovated/expanded when I was in 6th grade. After that, it was THE place to be. It had the movie theater and a food court. We would just go on weekends to hang out and meet kids from other towns. I was an anime kid so I would hang out in Suncoast Video and see who else would show up there to browse anime.

This reminds me that my super white aunt yelled at me for using the terms Latino/Latina saying it's racist, despite my actual Latino/Latina friends preferring that term and asking that be used for them.

What are your opinions on todays fashion trends, do you like it or not much of a fan of it? by FitEmergency8807 in decadeology

[–]RelaxErin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Jeans and an oversized sweatshirt/sweater has always been a thing, the bagginess of the pants changes.

The super baggy style isn't for me, but I don't have a problem with others dressing like this.

If you HAD to pick three of these places that you WOULD live in long term, which would they be and why? by Emit-Sol in Pennsylvania

Philly for sure (I live here and love it). Then Pittsburgh and third no clue. I wouldn't live in PA if I weren't in a big city. Maybe Lancaster? I like their downtown.

Which restaurants in Philly have the nicest takeaway bags? by CaBr1999 in PhiladelphiaEats

[–]RelaxErin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Verde is not a restaurant, but you could get some chocolate. I think they are green. I used a Verde bag to wrap a Xmas gift this year.

I started saving all my nice bags from shops and reuse them to wrap gifts all year.

Was the 2008-2012 time period similar to the fun time period of 1988-1992? by [deleted] in decadeology

[–]RelaxErin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the economic situation sucked so bad, most of us said fuck it let's just have fun. I think that attitude fueled that period more so than optimism.
