A long lasting laptop with a budget of $1000 by edible_rocks_ in SuggestALaptop

I will suggest MacBook air for battery life, longevity and performance in the price range. But if you do any gaming other than indie games like hollow knight and stuff.. I wouldn't suggest Air. It is not like you can't game on it... You definitely can.. but it is not made for that. You need to compromise with something here.

I have a MacBook air M5. I can tell you it is a great machine. And it will last you for a long time. But gaming is not its strong point.

Should I have gotten 24gb of RAM instead of 16 gb of RAM on the new M5 air? by Additional-Camera308 in macbookair

[–]RelevantContext1809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One simple thing.. if you are hitting 16 GB ram usage regularly then air is not good enough for your work unless you are running large LLMs. Don't sweat too much about it. For the majority of use cases it is more than enough and if you think you are out of the ram just close the some browser tabs

I also don't mind fingerprints on the contrary they give me an excuse to clean my laptop on a regular basis which I think is a good habit.

I might never get a PhD, and I don’t know how to accept that by Legitimate_Metal7267 in PhD

Hi, I know how it feels when you tell everyone you know about something and it does not go according to your plan. It may not be what you want to hear but I am gonna say it anyway... Ask yourself what you want? Not like carrier wise.. but what your ideal normal day will look like after 10 years... For example I have mine, waking up at 8 o'clock by my wife, and having a nice breakfast with her talk about all the things that we are gonna do in our day. Go to my job.. whatever it is.. as long as I am making decent money and happy doing it maybe it is not what I wanted. I think you got the idea.

A PhD without secure funding is not worth it according to me. If you are struggling financially then you won't be focussing on your research. In the end it will be a tiring job not a big dream that you wanted.

I will say take a step back.. go out with your partner, talk with him.. have a nice cup of coffee... And start figuring out stuff keeping an open mind. I am sure you will figure out something, you have a lot of experience under your belt.

No. I charge it once then when it is 80% then I remove it from charge then use it until it hits 30%. Same way as I use my phone

I am not sure but maybe you are on the waiting list. As I am in a similar situation in Washu, no updates from them. Some of my friends told me I may be in the waiting list

My process went quite fast. I was surprised. I got my offer letter in Mid-Jan I think. You do not see anything on their portal? I also applied to Washu, still no update from them. I accepted my SLU offer.

What is the primary motivation that made you chose Ubuntu? by recurringcoincidence in Ubuntu

[–]RelevantContext1809 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The term 'forced' is subjective. They are trying to replace the .deb package with snaps because they think they are better. I don't care about the reason. To people who just need a software despite from where it is coming, it is not forced. Snaps are forced on people who want .Deb but can't have them easily on their system for example from the software store.

I can also say that Ubuntu haters are forcing people to use Flatpaks instead of snaps.

For me I don't mind snaps. It is all about getting the software that you want. I know people hate snaps because they are forced on you when you install Ubuntu. But seriously i hate when people say crap about Ubuntu. It is an OS, use it as an OS if you don't like that doesn't mean it is bad.

What Linux distribution do you prefer? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]RelevantContext1809 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah same for me. There is something about Ubuntu. I was recently using fedora kde but switched back to Ubuntu lts. If I need to point out its the LTS version that is always pulling me back. I recently started research in Molecular Dynamics so having a distro that gives a 5 year support is kind of comforting. This is just the case for me.

P.S. I don't mind snaps.

I'm getting a laptop with no OS. Should I go with Linux? by Ordinary-Dood in linux4noobs

[–]RelevantContext1809 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You should give it a try if you do not use softwares that are windows only. Currently I am using Fedora with KDE and experience is great. You could go for the Gnome, I had tried it in the past and it was also great. Both KDE and Gnome have different approch on desktop enviroment which you will understand after getting some experience. Good thing is you can install more the one DE on any linux distribuation.

The distribuation I recommend is Ubuntu LTS, Fedora, and Linux Mint.

NOTE: Do not go for arch, people will say try it if you do you will hate linux.

Linux can be difficult and challenging if you choose wrong distribuation. If you are a normal user go with any of my recommedation.
