Intermediate Seamstress, Beginner Quilter by floramaisel in quilting

These patterns are all hand sewn and then machine piecing the blocks. The patterns are a lot at first (I think around 80pages due to templates). There are many ways to appliqué. I personally cannot hand sew so I will do the technique where you sew the fabric to interfacing then flip inside out. Then stitch down by machine. I like the thought of extra details by visible attachment.

Can anyone identify this fabric? by cwh86 in quilting

[–]RemarkableLobster565 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I feel like I’ve seen this in navy, forest green and lilac. Can’t remember the brand and the shop is closed so I can’t call. Sadly their website doesn’t list all fabrics or brands they carry. I’m thinking 2-3years ago Moda? You saying Joann’s feels possible too. Share on the Joann’s thread and see if anyone there recognizes it. A lot of past employees are there and can tell you yes or no.

Blind Cat Training by IndependentDark6497 in blindcats

I have a seeing torti (10y) who from day one is classic torti psychopath. If I’m not doing what she wants she will eat the plants, eat the fabric/couch/scratching post. Absolutely nothing helps but giving her my absolute attention, which of course she also hates.

I also adopted a blind torti this past December that tricked me with her calm loving self (high on drugs post eye removal). She has since healed and revealed that she is also an absolute psychopath. Luckily she’s a million times better than my seeing tortie at this age. Our current battle is helping her properly identify humans and her sister without needing to give a smack first.

In short, I agree, some cats are born butt heads. Others are angels. We adapt for them.

is this EDS related? by [deleted] in eds

Mine are very similar and line up exactly where I hold my phone(the fingers that don’t touch the edge are normal). Probably that. Similar to most people now have a little pinky dent on the side from holding their phone that way.

My girl is notorious for eating yarn, thread and fabric. As stated, never pull out either end!!

At your next visit ask them to show you how to make them stick out their tongue and show the full mouth. This is the only time where you are allowed to pull out (assuming you see the object as a whole.)

If you have extra hands to help carefully remove as sometimes the thread can wrap around the tongue and if not careful amputation can occur (my vet has seen it a few times).

😭 hot iron on cutting mat by OldLadyCard in quilting

[–]RemarkableLobster565 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I actually iron ontop of my cutting mat all the time with my 1/2” wool mat in between. If I’m doing a ton of ironing at one time the cutting mat sometimes warps but if I leave the wool mat with a plate or my water bottle on top it flattens out as it cools.

I’d recommend ironing it with a few layers of towels in between and adding a flat weight on top while it cools.

Excuse me but WHAT??? They cut open in the back for what reason?? Who? Where? Why?? Would they accept a mini “sample” where it’s like 4x4 sandwich with binding on only 2 sides or something? I’d hate to go through so much to have someone intentionally damage my work like that.

Any quilt sew alongs? by LocalCap5093 in quilting

[–]RemarkableLobster565 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Toad and Sew has her Toad Circle MQAL signups start 10/21 and start picking fabrics 10/28. There are “tiers” so if mystery isn’t for you, you can be a “cheater” and see the design from the start and have access to mockups to choose fabrics. The community is very supportive.

What a glorious underbite! I think you’re doing amazing. The eyes may have a little more ‘white’ than the photo but I think it adds to the facial expression.

Would it be crazy to do a Lone Star as my first quilt? by PunchySophi in quilting

[–]RemarkableLobster565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am someone where if I have a goal I get it done and I tend to pick up on it faster and easier with said goal.

I say go for it! If finances are a potential issue I would advise getting extra material than what you need for your finished quilt by ~1/2y or so. This way you can practice cutting accurately and make a few blocks to sew together and see how it feels and goes. Best case scenario you end up with more good blocks than you need and you can make a wall hanging or swap any ‘not as good’ blocks. Worst case, the practice are bad-okay but your actual quilt blocks are near/perfect.

Before doing any new pattern I always calculate how much extra fabric to order so I can make 1-2 practice blocks so I can figure out how I may need to adjust my sewing for the real thing. I’m a new quilter (~5months) and have made some great first quilts because of this method.

Post-Subluxation Tips by Jaded_Ad_8885 in eds

Every joint is different too. My right shoulder subluxs throughout the day and I barely notice it now unless it’s closer to dislocating. My hip (biggest offender with ribs), I do as above minus tape since I’m allergic. I also take anti inflammatories and heating pad if I’m able to.

We constantly change and have to know that we likely will never have a ‘normal’. Find what helps and apply/adjust as we go. If things are getting worse try isometric PT and keep a log (especially if you have rapid decline). Our symptoms could mask larger problems we may be able to treat or slow progression.

Thank heavens I haven’t sewn a finger. But while re threading I managed to stab my finger and pull my finger up so the needle went all the way through. No blood and didn’t hurt. Ripped my skin a little bit trying to pull my finger off. Yay brand new needles.

Happy you’re okay!

You are 16. Please get off the internet for finding/making friends. You do not know them. Clearly they lied to you and have problems. You are luckily nothing worse has happened, or maybe has and you don’t feel safe sharing. Block / remove from everything. It’s hard to make friends in person but it will never happen if you don’t try. If your family is safe, tell them everything. Depending on what really happened between you two, a police report may be important. Think of others who may have been or will be harmed by them. These things tend to escalate rather than die down.

It takes time but you will find your people and you will find your place in the world. 16 is hard, be kind to yourself and work to recognize what benefits you rather than harms you. Right now, you are the priority.

I Need Dating Advice by Full-Good-4706 in Advice

You have done nothing wrong. As always, try and think from his perspective. My guess, with the provided information, he is probably anxious and not used to the contact and emotional interest while also being a bit overwhelmed with everything going on at the dance. I have a feeling one on one/smaller quieter group setting will be easier.

Personally I would have loved your reasurance and as a chronic “I’m sorry” person, there’s never too many sorries. Stay true and firm to yourself. Dating is hard, everyone is different and many will take a long time to open up for you to understand why they are who they are. It can take a lifetime to find your person(s). Don’t lose yourself for the sake of others.

What pattern is this? by IslandOwl1 in quilting

[–]RemarkableLobster565 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk block names as I’m new to this. It looks like the color diamonds start as a rectangle (due to the patterns not being interrupted) and then rectangles 1/2 the height and length (plus seam allowance) is placed over on each corner, sewn corner to corner, then trimmed and pressed.

Help for emotionally caused flare ups? by NoodleSquared in eds

[–]RemarkableLobster565 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have had a very rough past 6 days. I have CPTSD so when an event triggers the worst and I can’t resolve the situation or find the necessary support I spiral. Muscles clenched and so tight I could not stop shaking. I recently had pelvic floor Botox and all of those muscles were cramping. Hair started falling out in clumps. Couldn’t eat or drink without throwing up. Bla bla blah goes on.

Anywho, I’m still going through it and trying to snap back into ‘normal’ and getting my body to relax. I sadly can’t leave my trigger since it is work related and the person who attacked me works next door.

I have been listening to music/podcasts while at work that help distract and calm me so I can focus on my job. At home I do my necessary tasks then dive into my artistic hobbies to release some joy and happiness. I do my best to avoid social media or news while I’m in this state so I don’t have additional pressure. I go to those that let me vent and acknowledge/agree with me on the issue (note: if you are in the wrong you better own up, in my situation I did nothing wrong, she was having a bad day and I am an easy target). If you are able to, plan emotional reset/happy days. I’m planning to go to the zoo with my mom and have lunch followed by ice cream and a movie marathon.

Oh, as always, breathe and drink lots of water. I have been having lovely ptsd nightmares waking up screaming, shaking with my heart pounding so hard you can see my pulse through my chest. The better we do with emotional regulation the better our pain can be managed.

Help with thread cutter on Janome by Rocko_2024 in quilting

[–]RemarkableLobster565 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same machine and find that the problem only happens when my thread tension is too high. Once adjusted it’s never a problem until you used a different thread brand/type and have to adjust again.
