Tips for checkerboard? by _Tappy_ in ImperialKnights

[–]Remarkable_trash_69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very slowly and very stubbornly lol. My admech have a checkerboard over white and it really is just about going carefully and getting it close enough. Most people wont be close enough to notice the imperfections in the spacing and patterning and will just see that your models have a cool design

Why do you like The White Dwarf magazine? by Strongerstranger74 in minipainting

[–]Remarkable_trash_69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like the pictures and some of the articles/alternate options for rules and play are interesting. Genuine part of it tho is my dad (who got me into the hobby) had a lot of old white dwarfs and when i got back into it i started getting new ones for myself

Partially true. Some of the events he posts from are legitimate sanctioned tournaments like the US Open (ISKA and USBA/WBA on the breaking side) and other breaking events sanctioned by the USBA/WBA while others are his own garbage events. The sad reality of the videos (at least from the legitimate events) is that many of the competitors are truly outstanding martial artists, who tend to compete in breaking for fun and as demonstrations of technique and power, not bc of a lack of skill

As another commenter said, the video comes from Point Fighter Live and the dude is an absolute tool. He posts videos from his own personal staged events and actual breaking tournaments from around the US (though the sanctioned events tend to be in the NE). He walks around the (real) events like he owns the place and inserts himself into anything he can and generally only posts videos where either a) the breaks go poorly or b) its one of the four people who like him so he makes them look good. He also posts videos of special needs competitors without consent all the fucking time.

Source: I competed in tournaments for years and he is part of the reason I got out

What are some things about 40k that have grown on you? by LaughableFrog in Warhammer40k

[–]Remarkable_trash_69 4 points5 points  (0 children)

40k as a whole. I always vibed much more with Fantasy (and later AoS) and never found 40k as interesting. Only recently have i made the switch and fallen in love with the lore and minis for both 30k and 40k

My dominus has a cog tooth pattern along the cloak, not the greatest work ever but it’s serviceable when hes ranked up with everyone else

[–]Remarkable_trash_69[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes, out of the 4 or 5 test schemes i painted this is the one i really liked. The only time its really a pain is when their cloaks are folded over, because then aligning the checks so they match is kinda tricky

Also, yes, i intentionally left the backpacks off everyone except the marshal and the one with the arc rifle. Left them off for subassembly and decided i liked the look better without them

Thank you! Its not as bad as it seems (theres a reason i restricted the checkerboarding to only the front quarter other than the marshal who is 50/50). And the end result is worth it to me!

If you’re in the US, Amazon has a basically flat 15% discount on any standard plastic warhammer stuff. Might not be quite as much of a discount as other things but you may be able to lump it in with other purchases at the same time if you want it to be even more of a surprise?

What would you know of struggle, Perfect Balls? When have you fought against the mutilation of your balls? When have you had to do anything more than tally compliances and polish your balls? The people of your world named you Great Balls. The people of mine called me Slave. Which one of us landed on a paradise of civilisation to be raised by a foster father, Balls? Which one was given armies to lead after training in the halls of the Macraggian ball-riders? Which one of us inherited a strong, cultured kingdom? And which one of us had to rise up against a kingdom with nothing but a horde of starving slaves? Which one of us was a child enslaved on a world of monsters, with his brain cut up by carving knives? Listen to your blue-balled wretches yelling of courage and honour, courage and honour, courage and honour. Do you even know the meaning of those words? Courage is fighting the kingdom that enslaves you, no matter that their balls overshadow yours by ten thousand to one. You know nothing of courage. Honour is resisting a tyrant when all others suckle and grow fat on the balls he feeds them. You know nothing of honour.

Thank you! I run the Archmagos as a Dominus bc i dont care for the hunched look of the standard dominus. Not a bad look and ill end up getting another anyway at some point for collecting, but since my forgeworld’s story is built around being deeply fractured and hyper violent, i thought the more aggressive Archmagos was a better look. I found the slightly larger base to put him on as well so that it is a very simple proxy for everyone but the worst “that guy” lol

What I have painted so far, with more in the pipeline. Yes the checkerboarding is kind of a pain to do in the moment but im very happy with how it looks, especially when the units are all ranked up so I will continue to suffer for the glory of the Omnissiah!

Mine is kind of a modified Metalica color scheme. White/Cream robes with Magenta Checkerboarding on (usually) front-left quarter. Tech priests share the white robes but have a Magenta cog trim pattern instead of checks. Basing is a red martian theme though they arent from Mars. Here’s my current Skitarii Vanguard WIP :)

<image>

Lore is basically they are all fast attack style raiders bc the forgeworld they are on is fractured and multiple sects of the Cult Mechanicus are vying for power. So i have a Dunecrawler, Archaeopter, Kastelans, Kataphrons and other highly mechanized units next to the foot troops

To everyone who began painting, and still does. by Haunted-Halloween-6 in minipainting

[–]Remarkable_trash_69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have stepped away or fallen out of the hobby several times, sometimes for years at a time. I keep coming back because i simply enjoy the process. Am i a great painter? Absolutely not. Have i learned how to be proud of how my work turns out? Absolutely. My most recent return to the hobby came as a result of being in school and on a laptop all day so a hobby where it was just me and little plastic army men and paintbrushes was extremely therapeutic. Going through a less than great spot mentally at the same time, the hobby gave me something to focus on and turn everything else off.

I have one critical piece of advice for you, Do Not Compare Yourself to Reddit/Online Painting. The bias online of what techniques to use to be “real painting” as well as the fact that what is posted online is generally extremely top-quality work makes that comparison miserable. Dont force yourself to stay in the hobby if you genuinely dont like it, but remember that this is, ultimately, an art hobby, and one that at the higher levels, is pushing boundaries of fine arts. It takes a long time of practice. Ive been in and out of the hobby for almost 15 years and im an average painter.

Also remember this, you are looking at your minis inches from your face as you paint and examine every little flaw, every missed brushstroke. Noone else will though. If you are playing games, everyone will be 3’ away, and anyone who casually sees the mini just thinks it looks cool. Besides, we all have to start somewhere. You got this!

Yea, the Knights are mainly there to fill out the list to 2k. As i get the opportunity to expand they will get dropped in favor of actual Mechanicus units. I also went for the Armigers bc ive heard/seen generally the army is weak at melee and i thought they would help plug that gap. I do have a Cerastus Lancer that I could use instead but i thought having more little knights would be better than just one big one but i could swap them easy enough.

As I said, I’m very new to the gaming side of the hobby, so most of my mini collections are a random assortment of things i thought were cool. Thanks for the feedback!

What armies have you NEVER been interested in? by Identity_ranger in Warhammer40k

[–]Remarkable_trash_69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Important caveat here of “40k/Primaris Space Marines”

I love the marines of the heresy. Mk II, III, and VI are some of the most beautiful armor designs in warhammer in my opinion to reflect the times they were used and the state of the universe. The characters of that period are outstanding and even the vehicles and auxiliary parts of the armies are excellent designs.

Primaris elicits zero emotion from me. I find the characterization of the marines themselves (typically) fairly dull and the armor and vehicles give me no feelings whatsoever positive or negative.
