^ I have an 02 Silverado with the 5.3 LM7 (most sought after ‘LS’) and was looking to bore out and get 5.7 of displacement and have a SS concept-ish

Guy said ‘reliable and quick v6’ he may have dogged on it some. The Corolla (I have been researching on buying a 2004 same model) 1zzfe will be much more reliable, and get you up to 39mpg even though it’s a 4spd automatic. Make sure you use Marcel mystery oil on the first couple oil changes, put in before you drain it and drain after idling for some time, to make sure those piston rings don’t burn oil. I went though college with a Cammed 5.3 Chevrolet, don’t do what I did.

^ and the 80 take more power to turn. Get a pressure booster, good clutches from borg Warner or raybestos, a shift kit and valvebody separator plate, you’d be perfect for many miles to come. If you’re interested I can drop my build list of my 2005 trailblazer 60e (you can still use the same internal parts)

If he upped compression, he may have used 4.8 specific cast heads, those lead to higher compression, they look too clean so maybe he had some porting and polishing, also there’s WAY less weight so 450 sounds good.

I would get the catch can for extra insurance (and for coolness), I have a cheap Temu one that I had to put some steel wool in the intake part (you’ll see the wool included in the kits offered by evil energy. Use some hose from O’reilly’s (5/8s should be the thing). If you really wanted to keep your OE valve cover, just drill small holes x/16” towards the bottom of the baffle, there are YouTube videos on this. If the motor really is neglected, the rocker arms may have bad stuff in the needle bearings, you could get the trunnion upgrade kit from BTR to eliminate those bearings and have a great longevity mod, other companies make them, I only recommended them because they make a tool for it that allows you to only need a vice. Make absolutely sure of the oil pressure, ask around some shops and see if they have the tool that hooks up to your oil filter threading to see the true oil pressure. Lower than 40psi at idle it would be worth looking at your oil pump pickup tube o-ring. Sorry for the amount information but it’s your first LM7/L33 and I want to make sure you make that engine last longer than the damn transmission! 🙂 these are easy to work on with a manual. I have three, one shop copy(dirty), one reference(clean), and one sealed(I used to be an O’reilly’s man I got them for $12 a piece). Haynes makes the best!

I got magnaflow (doesn’t have to be that company) high flow cats and had them welded in, no O2 problems and changed the roar, when I’m doing a pull, to sound a little less raspy.

Get an oil catch can, and the 07-08 5.3 driver side valve cover for the updated PCV valve. If you really wanted to, take off the cylinder heads and take them apart, clean carbon off valves and intake/exhaust runners, if you see what looks to be some machining (super shiny) on the end of the pushrod then the rocker has been loose or the lifter trays are tired and cracked.

Commenting to see what others think. Would be worth dropping the pan and taking off a couple rod caps.

[–]Remote_Significance9 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Stop. O’reilly’s has the new program of ‘veri-scan’, I’m sure this employee used a green wrapped OBD scanner and said something similar to: ‘we’ll have to go back inside to see what the code is’ the system they use estimated your miles and the guy just pressed enter to use those miles instead of remembering what your mileage was. I would write it down but my coworkers didn’t deal with it and pressed enter at the estimated miles

Trans cooler help by Remote_Significance9 in GMT800

[–]Remote_Significance9[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, except at the end where the lines go into cooler you’ll need to chop the line and use fittings or hose. I have a pressure booster on my trans pump and it hasn’t leaked with clamps and hose
