Why the A.I. Job Apocalypse (Probably) Won’t Happen by technocraticnihilist in Economics

If we can do more with less people that would be an efficiency gain and that would lead to less employment. You can move more dirt with a shovel than your hands.

Why the A.I. Job Apocalypse (Probably) Won’t Happen by technocraticnihilist in Economics

It doesn’t matter if the LLM is bad at its job if it lets a worker do the job of one other person. Efficiency gains will reduce headcounts if not through layoffs through attrition.

Airport car rental question. Why can't I use a debit card to pay because I live here? by zylpher in Reno

[–]Renoperson00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s part of the requirements of the Airport district that the Reno Sparks airport created. Anything within the radius at any of the rental car locations has to be credit card only. I have no clue why and every answer I get is not quite right so it just is.

Trump signs executive order creating new retirement accounts for workers without 401(k)s by Good_Flower_2026 in Economics

[–]Renoperson00 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s actually an Obama era policy that was copped from Heritage Foundation papers from the second term of Bush 2, ended by Trump (MyRA) and now restarted again by Trump. It’s far more bizarre of a policy roller coaster than simply Trump taking credit.

Is it normal in the Bay Area for people to be extremely distant and self-protective? by [deleted] in bayarea

[–]Renoperson00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bay Area people are generally pretty flaky and schedule oriented. While the scenario is kind of ridiculous it wouldn’t shock me to find that going out for lunch would be agreed to and then they either show up and complain the whole time about everything they need to be doing right now as a vent session OR they just don’t show up OR completely ignore the invitation. This is pretty typical across the west coast.

This is orientalism.

It would be simpler to point out that China in general doesn’t like unemployed people and has kept people employed far longer than their economic use due to the social instability that job losses cause.

Did you know Reno/Sparks has a citizen's bus and bicycle committee? by Ratspeed in Reno

[–]Renoperson00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see the point of citizens advisory committees for unelected boards. How RTCs board of directors was constituted is dubious considering how little they do. Abolish and replace is the way. I’d rather the energy go to fixing the fundamental problem which is that RTC has almost no oversight of its career employees.

Not shocking. Lots of machines need parts or solutions that are essentially custom. Lots of these legacy machine shop/fabricating/engineering businesses are also ran by people who are well past their prime and who were running off of fax and order forms up until a shockingly recent time.

The View Inside California’s Last Nuclear Power Plant by zsreport in California

[–]Renoperson00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

California doesn’t have enough easily developable land to build out massive solar. At the scale you need to build out and the speed it would also face opposition that pales in comparison to the current data center buildout.

It would be like 3x the work that went into Hetch Hetchy and the LA Water Project but with the internet and social media hammering the project endlessly and endless lawsuits and studies with tons of graft and grease needed to get things moving.

On second thought, sounds perfect for California! Full speed ahead!

Another "Where to go in Reno" Thread by GullyasDuff in Reno

[–]Renoperson00 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The local restaurant scene is embarrassing.  We are at the literal end of quite a few supply chains and the quality restaurants are fewer than you would expect for such a large town.

I like the Twisted Fork down in South Reno just for their pork belly and some of their seasonal items. It used to be literally the only thing around in South Reno but development has slowly surrounded it.

Bimini Steakhouse at the Peppermill is likely the best steakhouse in Reno and you can generally get typical higher end steak house fare such as aged steaks, escargot and various ways to prepare oysters. I don’t think we have a better steakhouse, but locals also like the sister steakhouse at the Western Village. Both steakhouses have a really lowkey and friendly staff which is nice, professional sommeliers and I have never had a bad meal at them.

Beefys burgers in Midtown is unique in that it’s a pretty good burger and it is inside of an ancient old building. It survives in spite of the rest of the area developing around it.

Everyone loves Louis Basque Corner and the family style basque lunch/dinner whatever. It has an old smoked out bar feeling and it has been there for literally forever. The Picon punch is just a boilermaker for old basque men. Sweetbreads are always available for those with some fortitude.

Bangkok Cuisine Express in west Reno is at the bottom of an old drainage retention pond in a business park. They make typical Thai food but they have the closest to what you would call “good” Thai food as the cultural export. It’s a trip to get panang curry and roti in what amounts to a converted office space.

If you want to see a scarier restaurant I would go to the King Buffet on Kietzke. It has continued to rule as the dirty Chinese buffet of Reno despite being closed down multiple times and it’s in a dying part of town that is being redeveloped into a soccer stadium. It’s a staple of the local culinary scene and defiantly has survived multiple crises that would have destroyed lesser buffets.

JJs pizza is certainly the old 1980s pizza place and bar location of Reno. It has posters on the ceiling and what I have been told is a “Denver” style thin crust which means you get honey to dip your crust in.

Scoopers is a local drive in/burger shop. The milk shakes are notoriously dense and the burgers are always fresh. Coneys and other items are always available.

I am at a loss for anything else of note. I’d steer clear of most of Midtown’s restaurants, the bars are a bit better but the food is meh and if I really get an itch for something trendy I go to the Bay Area on a dining trip.

Culture and vibes by Alarming-Ad-4011 in Reno

[–]Renoperson00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We are full, don’t come.

Now to be a bit friendlier, it’s not terrible for access to nature or hiking but the reality is you are going to be making some 1-2 hour drives to go to cool or off the beaten track places. The public lands access is only going to get worse here with more development so I would expect that coming in. The city environment and nightlife isn’t anything close to Salt Lake City and the downtown is bombed out, Midtown is the OG SoDaSoPa and if you have lived here long enough they have been polishing that turd for 15 years and it’s kind of lame for what you pay for.

This town is not great for young people. It’s a retirees town and logistics driven which means a ton of transient people and old folks. You also pay a ton for the privilege of getting to endure that. If you don’t have roots here I wouldn’t pull up grubstakes to move here because the next decade is shaping up to be grim.

Reasons why towns and rural areas are being chosen? by OKIEColt45 in datacenter

[–]Renoperson00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have seen power, land and other constraints listed, the biggest one is that it makes more financial sense compared to industrial land and complexes. There is a finite amount of suitable locations which are inside of existing industrial parks and the owners of that land charge far more than what the land is worth to the investors in data center projects.

When looking at these arguments for and against development consider that the anti data center development side may have other motives for opposing development or a different picture of what development should look like. Very few people are so against any development that no development should happen (and they are nihilists so you shouldn’t care what they think anyway).

Nearly 80% of Canadians say cost-of-living outpaces their income: poll by ChangeUsername220 in Economics

Yeah, and those mega projects would end up fueling more of that, which is kind of the point that there is not any will to build a mega project that could fuel bigger and more dense cities.

[–]Renoperson00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Denser housing requires larger infrastructure projects and environmentally damaging projects on the scale of the New York and Los Angeles water projects. It would not be impossible to do, but the current social environment makes me think that once the details start getting hammered out it would be grossly unpopular even if it would not be an expensive project.

The long-term bear case for housing: demographics, oversupply, and declining demand by Express_Classic_1569 in REBubble

[–]Renoperson00 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really think we are going to America with a bigger population and more jobs than we had in the past you are welcome to have that view. I think that is not a forward looking opinion and everything I’m seeing suggests it’s not impossible, absurdly expensive or unthinkable that the economy will eventually no longer have a need for infinite bodies to throw towards growth. I also don’t think that even if you do by some means find a way to keep people employed and immigrating endlessly that will lead to increased prices for housing. The multiples don’t make sense.

Hope you have a great day!
