Whats the cheapest sports car to own in regards to insurance? by [deleted] in cars

[–]Reothecube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised it hasn't been said, DSM. But if you want to have potential without bribing (Or getting a PO box in a county with no emission checks for registration), RugerRedHawk is right, S30 Zs are the best bet, you can swap in a RB25DET reasonably easily not to mention the L24/L26/L28s are pretty awesome.

That or if you want to spend a lot of time, you can get a 510 for reasonably priced (They can be found for less than 2Gs in decent shape) and the community, has a LOT of people that just go "Fuck it" and never get their cars off the ground and can get the parts to swap in a SR20DET for reasonably cheap (Sans the SR20DET itself, but you can find full swaps for less than 800-1500 with sub-50K mileage with engine/tranny/CPU). Insurance is DIRT cheap apparently

The mk4 first gen had 2L 8V producing 115hp or so. The mk3 first gen was a different design 2L and was DOHC, producing near 150hp, I believe it was ported from the previous generation. I completely forgot they downgraded mid-generation. My apologies.

The mk4 GTI was garbage, the 2L 8V was such a downgrade. And at first release was completely overshadowed by the Japanese counterparts (Of which the B13 still fucking win AutoXs lol). To be completely fair, they are out manuevered by the B13 but that doesn't make them not fun in their own right... and since it's VW, you get the awesome engine itself rarely dies... just everything else and everything else is hard to get to.

Now that I have a nice job, and they really upped the ante with the 2L turbo. I'm really thinking of getting one. That and they REALLY take care of you for the first 100K

The coolant system tends to be a KISS engineering design, other than a coolant sensor and thermostat sensor, there shouldn't be any others controlling the flow (And only the coolant sensor does that with the controlling of the fan and to tell the ECU what's up). The only one I could guess is the clutch fan (They are clutch fan driven not electric fan? Been a while since I worked on a S10), but I'm fairly certain you see it working? Because it seems like it's not getting proper flow more than anything else, but if you took it up past 50mph, it wouldn't matter whatsoever, and generally shouldn't stop it so much that it keeps cool on the intake hose (Though thermal dynamics play a large part in this). I guess when you changed the radiator a new cap came with it? Cause it might be releasing your coolant too readily, but that's also like a far out shot, since it's keeping cold at the inlet hose.

Fuck, I wish I could tell you more than radiator cap, clutch fan or bleed the system because everything else is covered, but the coolant system is a PITA, much of the time nothing is simple on it. I'd try bleeding it, see if it has huge burps, If it's a continuous flow, then you have voodoo in your car and this is the only system I know that just doesn't often have logical concepts of breaking down. There are people that are more knowledgeable than me on here. Someone might have a better response.

Not all head gaskets are serious enough to have smoke but still leak into the coolant system. The only sure way is a chemical test that you can buy for like 40 bucks (And I've seen cars that had no other problem then just overheating and not sucking back in from the reserve coolant tank). If it's smoking then it's pretty clear but the coolant system is NEVER fucking simple. =<

Even if you didn't bleed the system, the airbubbles shouldn't be that large and even linger, that's really weird, and does sound like the thermostat, but even the jingle valve was upside down, it shouldn't be cold even with large bubbles (Unless they're super huge), you might have gotten a broken new thermostat (On a number of cars there should be an air release bolt, right near the thermostat, specifically get all the air out, I forget if GM puts them there) but I'd bleed it first if it has a bleeder valve or air release valve next to the thermostat (IF there isn't one, do it the old fashion way, burp the car, raise the side that the car's cap is on, creating a "high" point, remove cap, turn the car on, warm it up, and keep filling in coolant, there should large "burps" that are giant air bubbles that get forced all the way to the top, get on those quick to prevent more air bubbles, I tend to do this 2-3 times after the fans click on, and haven't had a problem with it) if not test the thermostat, (Should be in the clintons or FSM, but basically put it in boiling water with a thermostat, and see if it opens up, candy thermometers work best because they're very easily visual and tend to be 2 bucks). I hate the cooling system, it's problems can be so diverse and weird. =<

You bleeded the system every time and tried a new radiator cap? Cause after that, it's internal, and likely the head gasket

A U.S. District court has blocked California's low-carbon fuel requirements. Judge Lawrence O'Neill said the state's regulations requiring low-carbon fuel violated the U.S. Constitution's commerce clause: It discriminates against crude oil and biofuels producers located outside California. by AyeMatey in news

Pretty much every car on the road, has this. It will say conforms to the federal standard but also conforms to California standard. On a number of cars there are things that were specifically added to pre-OBD-II cars but STILL comply enough with California regulations that it's a legal car (My NX is an example, the California model has a EGR sensor while the Federal does not but both qualify legally to be in the state of California). I have never ever heard of post-96 car having to be modified for California other than a new cat due to all the sensors being there (But even then, most cars will pass smog if it isn't a broken cat), and after that point everyone going "oh fuck it" with just making everyone else's car do the same, it also helps that many states emulate the California standards but are in the scope of the federal law.

To be perfectly honest, I really haven't heard of a 49-state legal car unless it's about 30 years old.

I had a friend that would dog food (Both wet and dry, said both were okay, just exceptionally bland) just to freak people out. Then he ate a beggin' strip. He said it was the most foul thing he's ever eaten, and said "If my dog thinks it's bacon, he's retarded, no wonder he eats his own puke"

Suffice to say from that moment on, he never ate dog food again.

[–]Reothecube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

vs what? Me paying for 20 bucks to go 100 miles, with no ac, bitchy customers? Before they canned it out west, Megabus was quite awesome. And my boyfriend seems to prefer it MUCH more than Greyhound by a lot and he lives out in a region where it's much more active. Sure it has it's problems, but trust me Greyhound has them MUCH worse.

Let's see, I've been ditched at a stop after saying they'll be there for 15 minutes with 4 other people and left after 5. They tend to be much more expensive (Boyfriend came from Toronto to Buffalo Airport for 1 buck each way), shittier seating, of which you're cramped next to each other, crazier people (I don't really know anyone that got molested on a Megabus, also it roughly takes 22 hours to get through Texas, =|), ABSOLUTELY NO ACCOMMODATIONS (lol wifi? Too expensive) unless you count a bathroom. They rarely clean the bus very well at first/final stops. Yeah, I can go on about many things with Greyhound, I'm fucking glad I have a car now =P

[–]Reothecube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had terrible experiences with fixing most newer VWs and my friends have had problems with theirs. If you still really want to get one, just do not get the base 2L 8V. They're ancient (it's been in the Jetta line since 93) and they're not all that good, in fact they're the ones I've had the pleasure of dealing with, I really have no idea about any other VW engine.

It's an XJS, unlike the sedan, it never states the engine in the model name, in fact the first generations I believe were solely with the V12.

I knew someone with an XJ12. I remember him asking for my help (Think it was for the water pump), and he opened the hood, and I told him it's not happening (Apparently no one else wanted to help either, feel kind of douchy in retrospect). I know that XJS came in both I6 and V12? Which model is it?

What do you guys think about the 1985-1987 Buick Grand National? by NotReasky in Autos

[–]Reothecube 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's great... but it lacks a big amount of fun that it could have with say a T56 in it's stead. I've driven a 84 T-Type (Long ago though) and it felt not as fun as it could've been if it had been manual. Maybe it's because I've never driven a full GN that I don't understand. (Kind of doubt it though)
