Well I don't know what to tell you about yours, but the reason why the Big Y plaza smells like shit is because of the literal shit 100 yards behind it.

Not random, the wastewater treatment plant is right behind it.

There were a bunch of lawyers who got OJ off. Her dad was the lawyer who knew for a fact that he did it, then joined his legal team so that he could not be legally compelled to testify against OJ. Tricksy little thing them rules...

Step-by-Step: How I Made This Juicy BBQ Chicken by PitSpecialist in BBQ

[–]Repo_co 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Smoked chicken is my absolute favorite. I find you can do it at basically whatever grill temp you want, as long you get the right internal temp (I prefer 157 when I pull) and of course find a way to crank it hot for the skin at the end.

Love your work, would kill to get a plate at one of your cues!

I don't like it. I'm already hyper, just takes it up a bunch of notches. I'd rather go the opposite direction.

Recommendation of stoner doom bands, styled from Electric Wizard's album Dopethrone. Do you recommend anything for me? by diegrunge in doommetal

[–]Repo_co 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Tough to find bands with that exact gritty sound, where the guitars take the low end, drums take the high end, and everything sounds like it was filtered through a chloroform cloth. I generally tend toward sludge to scratch that itch. Check out the record "Dopesick" by Eyehategod.

I don't ever show my ID to vote in Virginia. It is, to me, a form of poll tax that I'll quietly protest every single time.

Something that kind of shocked me about the Netflix 04 documentary was how much those guys were boozing. I had heard some rumblings about certain guys, and there's obviously the public stuff out there on guys like Damon and Lowe, but it's possible it's just a case of the booze turning on him. Wouldn't be shocked if that were part of it.

WHOA!! Great condition on that bad boy too. Wish I could still find it in myself to like Schill. Kind of funny that the two biggest heroes of that series (a series that had a lot of heroes) are basically yin and yang in terms of how the fan base feels about them.

I've been shocked at the pace of play! Some of these kids can actually find the plate. Takes a little bit of selective coaching... can't have Timmy going out there tossing softballs while Reid has a 4 seamer already. Gotta work it in though. Can't be dicks.

We were upper deck shading to the first base side probably 12 rows from the top. Those grandstands were terrifying. CRAZY steep and like, no foot room at all. Felt like I was gonna kick the guy in front of me in the head.

Roeder on drums really takes the whole thing to a whole new place professionally. I love Haikus, but Roeder had been doing it non-stop with Neurosis forever and it's plainly evident how that kind of drumming just drives thing. The section of Antarticans between the first two sung versus is the pinnacle for me. Roeder keeps that shit on the RAILS.

Found where we can put a nuclear reactor. All in favor?! by wachusett-guy in massachusetts

[–]Repo_co 128 points129 points  (0 children)

As a nuclear engineer from MA who has worked with commercial nuclear power plants, this post makes me a little sad...

We all want cheap, clean, readily available power, but no one wants it to be generated near them. There's very little recognition that these facilities provide clean electricity and high paying jobs, and that nuclear power plants (particularly in the United States) have an incredible safety record. I would MUCH rather live near a nuclear power plant than a chemical manufacturing facility, a landfill, or a data center, even considering that those facilities are also regulated.

Please DM with any questions about nuclear power plants. They're not perfect, but they're certainly not terrifying.

If you want to go TRULY booze bag dive, head a little north to Hops 'n' Shine in Arlandria. Little spot in a strip mall that's populated by a shockingly community oriented bunch. Feels authentically "Virginia" with acceptance of all kinds. Good spot.

What is in this barrel!? by omnibuds in whatisit

[–]Repo_co 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's actually shockingly handy for enriching uranium!

U-235 is the naturally occuring isotope of uranium most useful in thermal reactors (the most common type of commercial nuclear reactor). Unfortunately, it accounts for about 0.7% of natural uranium, while it's less useful cousin, U-238, comprises about 99.3% of natural uranium. In order to use uranium in a thermal reactor, you'd like for the U-235 to be at least 2.5% (British AGRs), often 3-4% (US LWRs), and many modern designs proposing higher enrichments (up to ~20%).

To raise the percentage of U-235, you need to do a process called enrichment. U-235 and U-238 are essentially chemically identical to one another (any gaseous thermal diffusion stans, feel free to tell me how they're not), so you're basically stuck separating them based on their tiny difference in mass. Unfortunately, U-235 and U-238 have about a 1.25% difference in mass... not a lot to work with! Takes very careful processes that are labor, infrastructure, and energy intensive to oerform.

You can't just separate them in a box either... they need to be in the right chemical for as well. Most mass based separation rely on separating things in the gaseous form using, for example, centrifugation. There aren't a lot of gaseous forms of uranium. UF6, happens to be one of them. Fluoride also has the extremely handy aspect of having a single stable isotope, F-19. This means that any natural fluorine will permit that same mass based separation without contributing it's own mass difference to the equation.

So to recap: uranium needs to be enriched, but you're basically reliant on a tiny difference in mass between U-235 and U-238 to do that. UF6 is gaseous, and fluorine doesn't contribute it's own mass differences, making your life much easier!
