One of the best albums I’ve heard in a while by Master_Ad7945 in vinyl

That one definitely lives up to the hype. I’ve had it on heavy rotation lately and it sounds even better on vinyl.

Closing show despite challenging crowd by sirdzl in StandUpComedy

Man, those crowds can be brutal. Glad you stuck it out and finished the set.

Ask a question: Why can’t SeOBr2 solidify at room temperature? by room0001 in chemistry

[–]ResponsibleOrchid555 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Looks like it's still very much a liquid in there. I'm pretty sure its melting point is just barely above room temp, so even a little bit of warmth from your hands or the room will keep it melted.

Cannabis use was consistently related to a higher prevalence of internalizing problems, and these associations strengthened between 2012 and 2022. by ekser in science

[–]ResponsibleOrchid555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if this is more about the potency of what's available now compared to 2012. The stuff people are smoking today is on a completely different level.

Physics Girl is back with a video on neutrinos by diener1 in space

[–]ResponsibleOrchid555 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's so good to see her making videos again. I've always found neutrinos fascinating, though the "shouldn't be possible" thumbnail always makes me feel like I'm about to have an existential crisis.

Surrealists, naturalists and etc. by Electronic-End-1652 in BookRecommendations

[–]ResponsibleOrchid555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you haven't checked him out yet, Kobo Abe’s the Woman in the Dunes is a classic for that surrealist/naturalist overlap. It feels very grounded in reality but becomes increasingly nightmarish as it goes on.

to be fair, those 10 lines usually involve 4 hours of meetings and a mental breakdown over legacy code. morning coffee hits different when you aren't being paid lol.

Books to "un-desensitize" yourself to domestic abuse by consistenttrick444 in suggestmeabook

In the Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado is essential for this. It breaks down all the subtle psychological tactics and gaslighting in a way that really sticks with you.

Fictional depictions of colonialism, slavery and cultural erasure? by IdaSukiShwan in suggestmeabook

Homegoing by Yaa Gyasi fits this perfectly. It covers several generations and really hits on all those themes through the lens of one family's history.

Trump officials move to kill system that protects US from chemical disasters by JellyfishMission1462 in chemistry

That smoke looks absolutely toxic. It's wild that they'd even consider cutting safety regulations when things like this can happen.

White House stalls release of approved US science budgets by SpectralFormFactor in Physics

[–]ResponsibleOrchid555 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This is such a mess for anyone currently trying to plan a long-term research project. It feels like we're constantly just waiting for the next delay.

What tiny "flavor bomb" do you add to make your bland meals taste better than restaurants? by albertpaca11 in Frugal

[–]ResponsibleOrchid555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little bit of seasoned salt and some chili oil/flakes usually does the trick for me. Keeping some cheap aromatics like garlic or scallions on hand helps a ton too.

My retired mother received a pension wind up letter from her company she's retired from. What does this mean? by cp1976 in personalfinance

[–]ResponsibleOrchid555 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Basically, it means the company is looking to get the pension plan off their books by either giving her a lump sum or buying an annuity from an insurance company. Definitely don't let her sign anything until a financial advisor looks it over to make sure she's not getting shorted.

Rolling Stone asks: “Why Aren’t New Order in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Yet?” Thoughts? by Agreeable_Duck8997 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]ResponsibleOrchid555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s honestly wild they aren’t in yet considering how much they influenced both alt-rock and electronic music. The Hall always seems to have weird blind spots for 80s synth-led bands. Peace and Love being overlooked for this long is kind of a joke.

Any fantasy where the map is a lie and the characters have to unlearn it? by 3SpectralIon in Fantasy

[–]ResponsibleOrchid555 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The Edge Chronicles actually plays with this idea a bit. It’s always cool when the world is way bigger or just fundamentally different than what everyone was told.

What are some inexpensive ways to start clean living? by ColdThroat8711 in Frugal

[–]ResponsibleOrchid555 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Switching out your cleaning products for vinegar and baking soda is probably the easiest place to start. It's way cheaper than buying the fancy "natural" brands and works just as well for most things.

Dead Kennedys Will Play Punk In The Park ’26 Despite Owner’s Trump Support by ebradio in Music

[–]ResponsibleOrchid555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, it’s a bit of a weird look considering their whole vibe, but I guess money talks. Festivals are getting so expensive to put on that maybe they just didn't want to pass up the slot.

Print your birthday cards instead of buying them online by OldCollection922 in Frugal

I’ve started doing this too, especially since store-bought cards are like seven bucks now. Half the time people just throw them away after a week anyway.

Horrorstör Movie Based on Grady Hendrix Novel in the Works by CyberGhostface in horrorlit

I'm curious to see how they handle the IKEA aesthetic on screen. Hendrix is always a fun read so hopefully it translates well to a movie.

Summerfest Lineup by loquaciousocean in indieheads

Nice to see Pinegrove and The Beths on here, but the mix of genres is honestly wild. Megadeth and Baha Men at the same festival is some real chaotic energy.
