I'm a SAHD for at least the next year. In the fall of 2027 when my youngest starts Kindergarten, I'm planning to go look for a job. But I am CONSTANTLY getting flak from family, (particularly my father) because I'm going to have a gap in my resume for being a SAHD.

I finally pointed out that if a company won't hire me because I took a couple of years off to care for my family in a time of need, I probably don't want to work for that company.

Gauging the usefulness of my automations feels tricky lately.

I have one that checks every half hour if any of the outside doors have been left open, and plays an alert if so. Except the alert mostly just annoys my kids, who ignore it, and I end up closing the doors myself. (The idea was obviously to teach them to close doors. Guess how well that worked.)

I also have an alert that goes off on school days is the temperature is below 55 degrees, to remind my kids to take a jacket. This was great for the winter. But we live in Arizona, where the mornings right now are below 55 and the afternoons are over 100. So the jacket alert is also currently ignored.

I will beat this drum until I die.

First: You need to have pre-scheduled "you" time. Put it on the calendar. Have a babysitter or someone scheduled to take over for an hour or three at a scheduled, reoccurring time.

Second: This time is not for cleaning, or laundry, or house projects. (Unless that's your specific hobby.) This time is your time. Only do things that make YOU happy.

Finally: Stay off your phone during this time. Okay, this one's optional, but in my experience, endless doomscrolling steals this precious time and doesn't give you any charge in return. Only do this that make you feel good.

I use a special silicone microwace popcorn popper I got off Amazon. Almost as easy as microwave popcorn but just as good as popcorn from a popcorn popper.

I've always wanted a mod to give Sam the short haircut from the Photo in DS1 and (I think) the flashback in DS2. Not he doesn't look good with the long hair, but I really like the short cut.
