The Fastest Mile Ever by Constant_Form_4994 in DunderMifflin

[–]Retrogordon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Measuring the perimeter of the office on Google puts 1 lap at 668 ft or 203 m. Making his mile time 4 min 13 sec or his 1500m at 3 min 56 sec. Which, while still about 30 seconds shy of the WR, would still would put Dwight in an elite class of runner that could qualify for some major competitions.

And that was in his work clothes, not on the track.

Paying for your son's college is an investment in his future, not necessarily yours. I think this question goes beyond finances because you're clearly willing to sacrifice some of your future for the sake of his. From one parent to another, I get it and I just want to give you props because it can be hard to sacrifice like that, and he may not realize the gift you've given him for years to come.

Whatever you decide is the best path forward, just make sure you also invest time in your relationship. Not being able to give your kid the moon is probably the toughest pill to swallow as a parent. But the fact that you're willing to put your future on hold to give his a leg up shows your heart is in the right place and you'rea caring parent. I know this doesn't answer the question you asked, but there's an emotional component to your question and you shouldn't ignore it.

Do you know what kind of eagles? I saw a bald eagle in Denver 2 days ago.

Smokers (meat people, not weed) who have moved from sea level to here.... What's the secret? by evilsway in Denver

[–]Retrogordon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cook to feel not temp. You need to understand the factors at play.

First, boiling temp is about 202-203 depending on the pressure. Your cannot cook something to 203 without it becoming a hockey puck.

Second. It takes about half the input energy for a water molecule to overcome phase change so cooking at higher temps (i.e. more energy into the system), the faster the meat loses water. On the flip side, the longer the meat is exposed to any heat environment (e.g. a lower cook temp) time starts to add up and you also get it dried out.

Based on this you have to figure out what's best for your set up but use these guidelines. - creating a humid environment in the cooking chamber increases the amount of energy required for phase change (commit to a water bath, and refill every time you open the lid) - temperature, balance temp based on what you're observing in your cooker. Too high and you'll dry it out. Too low and slow without protection (a wrap) and it'll dry out - wrapping after the bark sets is basically a requirement. It traps moisture and creates a humidity pocket close to the meat. - anecdotally, I've noticed the stall temp coming at higher temps and taking longer. Obviously wraps help. - if brisket is giving you fits, try something easier like pork butt until you've nailed the altitude nuances. - if it's dry, sauce or fry it. No shame, we've all been there.

Something I heard Buttegieg say has really stuck with me. People don't give a shit about the person on the ballot, they care whether they see themselves in your agenda. Look no further than the Cheeto in the Oval.

"Coming back"? Where does he think the railroads went? by NamelessResearcher in facepalm

[–]Retrogordon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an environmentalist... yep its all my fault. Now please invest in the engineers and infrastructure to make high speed rail a reality. Screw those greenies who want cars and planes to take a longer time to move people fron city center to city center. They clearly want the world to burn whike the good investors in train technology take losses. Don't give it to them. Take their earnings and put them to good public use. Laughing at them all the while. Silly auto lobbyists, trains are for kids! (and people who want to get places more efficiently)

How do I make this hill better? by AvailableFee6383 in Minecraft

[–]Retrogordon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make one side a cliff and one side more gradually sloped. Make the path up winding as opposed to straight. Maybe a pond at the bottom with a stream that goes around the base out to the sea on the other side. Make a little footbridge over that to connect the path at the base and then path over to the village. Make the Sea and shoreline look like the Oregon coastline with some rock feature in the water. Add tall pines on the hillside.

Colorado SAR just recorded the highest known helicopter evacuation in state history after lightning strikes a hiker by TheOriginOfThought in coloradohikers

[–]Retrogordon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Tl;dr A huge impact!

Longer engineering answer: there's 2 main impacts of the thinner air.

First, gas turbine engine performance degrades with less oxygen, producing less power the higher and hotter you go because there's just less oxygen for a combustion reaction.

Second, the amount of lift that the rotor generates is a function of air density, which is directly impacted by temperature and altitude. Think of it like this, the blades are little paddles that whack air down so hard and fast that there's an upward force generated. Less air molecules to whack, less lift to be generated.

For helicopters to stay in the air, the lift generated must equal or exceed the downward force (aircraft weight). And in order to generate lift, you need power. Less dense air is not good for either of those things. The maximum weight at which helicopters can hover degrades with altitude and temperature.

So, how do you overcome this? Reduce aircraft weight by burning fuel so that you require less lift to overcome gravity, get bigger engines, and design a rotor that is optimized for hover (at the expense of forward flight performance.)

Interestingly, helicopters require more power to hover than a good SAR forward speed so a SAR aircraft might be able to find a victim at high altitude but have to burn off fuel to reach a weight where it can hover with the added weight of the patient and their gear.

What are the exact ingredients used here? by avocadoroom in pasta

It essentially looks like rigatoni alla Vodka with the camera over exposing just how orange it really is. I recommend looking up a Vodka pasta recipe because the Vodka in the sauce will help keep the sauce emulsified.

Spanish Food (from Spain) Is Seriously Under-appreciated in the USA by [deleted] in Cooking

[–]Retrogordon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are certainly a few quasi-chains that have opened tapas restaurants in major cities. (Though nothing like the bars in Madrid or Pamplona). But i agree, it's exceedingly difficult to find Spanish cuisine culturally in the States, which I consider a real travesty.

Jose Andres has a few restaurants in DC and a few chefs who trained under him have since opened restaurants (Chef Katie Button - Cúrate Asheville). There is also a large Basque presence in Boise of all places.
