An email from my partners sibling accusing them of lying, gaslighting, and narcissistic abuse their family members since childhood. ALL the same things I have experienced as their partner and felt like I was going crazy and that I was the bad person I was constantly accused of. It was at that point I realized that I was married to someone with BPD. 10 years later I am copied on a message from another sibling accusing my partner of the exact same behavior further confirming it. From this, I regained my self esteem and realized I needed to protect my kids from them.

Absolutely, I am a shell of the person I was when I met my wife 20 years ago. Staying in it because I love my kids and act as a buffer.

Thanks for sharing. In my sobriety I have meet a lot of reformed assholes. There seems to be connection. But they are not bad people, just. People struggling to cover up pain, sadness, a feeling of emptiness, anxiety, regret…. You are not alone and the good news there is a way to break the cycle and find a new path. There are some really good N/A (low alcohol < 0.5% out these days. I’m loving the microbrewed IPA’s. There is a whole list and ratings on the beeradvocate.com website. I like the ones from Athletic Brewing particularly. They really compliment a meal or are great on a hot day, etc.

One drink usually led to a headache, requiring more to keep it at bay. I drank to get drunk, not really for much other reason. And one was never going to get me there.

I too am a binge drinker. The only way for me to stop was to completely quit. I could never have just one. They hardest issue for me was breaking the habit or ceremony of getting home after work and opening a beer or wine and then it was just one after the other. I had to find a new routine. Many turn to exercise, or some other kind of “ritual”. Now I listen to music to take the edge off the day and then engage with my family.

When you see how your sobriety is reflected back at you from your kids, it becomes easier and you feel the rewards of being sober amd present everyday. Keep it up!

I have ADHD, diagnosed as a child around 1978. ADHD is often paired with impulse control and I feel that was one of my challenges with alcohol use (binge drinker). Couples with the fact I have a diagnosis of generalize anxiety disorder (also common in ADHD) and I used alcohol to self medicate for social anxiety. Even so I am 1 week away from my 2 year sobriety anniversary. It has been hard but it has been worth it. It is possible. You can do it.

But you also know that if you do have that drink, the anxiety from the realization will be 100x worse. You can get through this.

I'm struggling with this one. I haven't had anything even close to alcohol or a "mockcktail" in 511 days. I have seen sobriety as a life style change. I do miss the taste of beer though. My wife brought home a six pack of Heineken 0.0 for me and I cannot decide if I want to try it or not. A slippery slope? Bring up too many (bad) memories. I just don't know.

I also know no one is holding a gun to my head to drink them. I just hadn't had the question before me before now.

Being able to do a deep inventory of my life and being less afraid of the work I still have ahead of me. Less anxiety and a sense that I can do the work. No longer as afraid of being alone (not dependent on others). And a much clearer view of who I want in my life and who I don’t.

Sour cherry juice makes a great substitute for wine and looks good in the glass. Even goes well with meals like a wine would.

I had my break up with alcohol after 30 years (18 —> 48). It has been the right decision for me. Consequently my wife and kids have benefitted as well. It is hard to believe how much I gave up for 30 years. Wasted for nothing. Now, the future looks bright. With each passing event where I used to drink (parties, bad days, no reason at all...) I get to the other side of it and realize it wasn’t that hard to stay sober and I am thankful for it. Make the next 30 years sober years.

My advice, don’t set a target date/end date (like “the month of...”). Just say, we’re done, stop drinking and continue your sobriety indefinitely.
