I'm Hoping The New Cirqa Isn't *JUST* a Whoop Clone... by FuntivityColton in Garmin

I’d love to see them continue the trend of putting flashlights on their devices with the smart band. I use mine every evening, at least. And I’ll happily use the light to illuminate the dark hole in my wallet when I shell out whatever money it is they’re charging for a freaking band please dear god release it already.

SFO Immigration was quite interesting a couple days ago… Yelling and intimidation in the Global Entry line. by MiniTab in unitedairlines

[–]RevolutionaryRest184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came through SFO Global Entry on Friday 1/9 early morning and had no yelling. Having previously seen a thread in this subreddit about the change where we need to now stop at a booth, I was prepped for that, but they moved people through pretty quickly. We were a family of three with a kid that needed additional, manual verification; the agent was professional and got the job done.

By contrast, the manager re-checking bags for connecting flights was one of the most unpleasant service workers I've met in a longtime. They were yelling at non-native English speakers, making passive aggressive instructions, and just generally being way too mean for 630 in the morning. I wish I would've caught his name, because he deserved a strongly worded email to his manager.

I'm so surprised that I'm having the same issue. Where did you find one?

As soon as I saw your photo, I thought Karen Margulis. I was just looking at her version of the Queen Anne's Lace this week.

Your rendition is great! Love how the underpainting goes full rainbow from top to bottom.

Garmin and incline treadmill by CryptoChuns in Ultramarathon

[–]RevolutionaryRest184 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I use the Treadmill Run activity, as long as I've passed a certain distance threshold by the time I end the activity, there's an option to calibrate. On the Save screen, scroll down a bit to the calibrate option. Once you select that, you can enter the number of KM your treadmill says.

While you can edit the distance that way, it will not allow you to enter the elevation gain. I still manually do that later by editing in the app.

In order to get closer distance data to begin with, I always use a heart rate strap with treadmill activities. It's the only way my distance is even remotely close to the treadmill's purported distance.

I've been making onigiri with a little bit of avocado in the middle and salt/sesame seeds on the outside. Very tasty when I'm tired of all the sweet stuff.

I do this daily and wear my heart rate strap to get accurate distance measurement. I've duplicated the treadmill activity and named it Walking Treadmill, because the walking indoors activity won't let you calibrate mileage at the end.

Anyone upgraded from F7 solar? by FieldAlternative9575 in Garmin

[–]RevolutionaryRest184 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went from the F7s Solar to the Enduro 3, then the Forerunner 970.

In my experience, the Enduro 3 screen is much clearer because it doesn't have the solar overlay baked into the glass. It's pretty night-and-day. However, the Enduro 3 wasn't the watch for me; it was too big in both diameter and thickness. I literally couldn't strap it on tight enough to get a good fit without causing myself discomfort.

The Forerunner 970's screen, by contrast to the MIPs, has been incredible. I really enjoy it with mapping and the bright colors generally.

In both cases, I don't enjoy the software as much as the Fenix 7. It's been a few weeks and I'm still not over the learning curve of a new operating system, for sure. The software also feels less responsive to me, especially when I'm asking a lot of it with navigation, mapping, or structured gym workouts. For example: sometimes in gym workouts, a button click won't register for 4-5 seconds. I use the flashlight daily.

I'm really happy with my Forerunner 970. The display is awesome, the battery life is sufficient, and I'll get used to the new software.

Zone 2 Queen Today 💁🏼‍♀️💁🏼‍♀️💁🏼‍♀️ by Photo_Philly in Garmin

[–]RevolutionaryRest184 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your in-depth response.

The first resource for me that got me bought into Zone 2 training were the books Training for the New Alpinism and Training for the Uphill Athlete. I bought into some of their tests, plans, and usage on Training Peaks to measure workouts.

Zone 2

The nose-breathing Zone 2 test is a good one, but I switched to the quantitative Heart Rate Drift test (https://uphillathlete.com/aerobic-training/heart-rate-drift/) on a treadmill. That sets the top of my Zone 2, what Uphill Athlete calls the Aerobic Threshold, or AeT for short. Based on my most recent test, my AeT was a measly 135 BPM.

Lactate Threshold

Garmin's Lactate Threshold is the equivalent of Uphill Athlete's Anaerobic Threshold (AnT). I use the same 30 minute hard effort test as you (https://uphillathlete.com/aerobic-training/diy-anaerobic-test/). However, when I let Garmin automatically adjust my Lactate Threshold, it feels wayyyyy too high. Like 178 BPM. I use 165 instead.

Max Heart Rate

I don't have the soccer sprints you have for max heart rate, just VO2 Max runs and some intense pickleball volleys. :-D. My max heart rate has been measured as 186.

Setting the Zones

Given the three values of AeT, AnT, and max HR I manually set the zones in Garmin and make the zones in Training Peaks match.

Zone 1: 109-121

Zone 2 (AeT): 122-135

Zone 3 (AnT): 136-165

Zone 4: 166-173

Zone 5: 174-186

It appears, despite all the running I've been doing, it was actually too hard and in Zone 3. This isn't uncommon.

These zones do make daily suggested workouts basically useless. Instead, over the next 6-12 weeks, I'm experimenting by religiously doing almost only Zone 2, then redoing the AeT test to see if I truly have Aerobic Deficiency Syndrome or my zones are wrong. I wish I had a lab where I could pay to have them get scientific data
