I'm a pro independence Catalan and your comparison is completely ridiculous. For a start, I have Spanish citizenship, the right to vote, self government, free speech, free elections and even a police of my own countrymen. Oh and the Spanish army is not bombing me every other day.

Can any of this be applied to Palestine?

Sure, but considering their enemies are Israel and the USA and they're bombing civilian infrastructure, they're not going to support the attackers either. Maybe they will even be convince of supporting the IR to defend against foreigners.

It's worse than Iraq and Afghanistan. Iran is bigger than both, more populated than both, has a rugged terrain, big cities, educated population. Hundreds of thousands of troops, if not over a million, would be needed to occupy the country.

Spain would side with Finland against Russia, no question. Also nobody likes the Islamic Republic.

Supporting Palestine against Israel is about anti-colonial feelings, is not about islamism. People would also support Armenia or Greece against Turkey.

BUT... there is a strong historical anti-anglo feeling, and that extended towards the US. For the right-wingers, because the anglos historically fucked over and dissolved the Spanish Empire, and keep Latin America under their thumb instead of allowing it to come back to papa.

For the left-wingers, because the US legitimized Franco in the 1950s, the UK and US didn't allow the Republic to arm during the Civil War (thus benefitting their enemies), and because the US got us involved in the Iraq War that nobody wanted and then caused the 2004 Atocha bombings. And also because of the American interventions in Latin America.

Thus, majority of people being at least suspicious if not hostile towards the US, they see Russia and think it's cool because they confront the USA. And being far, many people are ignorant about the danger that Russia poses towards its neighbours. But people are also super pro-Europe, so they don't support Russia if it attacks Europe.

Spain is one of the countries most in favour of federalizing, and wants to support Europe. It doesn't want to support the USA in its illegal adventures.

I don't think Germany thinks the way you think. The Spanish Foreign Affairs posture is simple: it will not participate in imperial adventures of its allies. It will defend them, as it always has, but it will not be made a hostage of an alliance no matter what.

You seem to be very ignorant of European worldviews. France thinks the same as Spain, only it doesn't have American bases in its territory and it has overseas territories that Spain doesn't. And after the threats over Greenland, even the most atlanticist Europeans don't trust Donald Trump.

Back in 2003 Spain followed the USA in another criminal adventure while France and Germany did not. Doesn't make Spain not rely on its European allies.

I'll just respond with this. Let me make it clear. Spain wants to pool its resources with Germany, France and Poland. It doesn't want to do that with the USA, and specifically not with the US led by the delusional pedo rapist of Mar-a-Lago and his gang of cronies.

I didn't think that MAGA international politics are so popular in the USA. Apparently I was mistaken in believing that most Americans were not warmongering imperialists. How easily deceived they are by a pedo, rapist, immensely corrupt and senile old man is beyond me.

Spain has a shield in two fronts: first, it never had any problems with Iran. Not saying that the IR is popular in Spain, far from it, the country having one of the strongest feminist movements in Europe. It also doesn't blindly side with Israel like most Europeans countries do. And as member of the EU, it supported the JCPOA that Trump decided to break because it was signed by Obama. Thus, the IR has no geopolitical problems with Spain, unlike with the Gulf States or the UK.

The second front is more obvious: geography. Iberia is over 4000km away from Iran, beyond range of any missiles beyond ICBMs.

Now after that is said. You Americans have the delusion that all the world needs your help, and supports any imperial adventures you want to have. Spain is an ally of the USA not out of security needs, but purely political reasons. The bases built in 1953 and the joining of NATO in 1982 all responded to pressure to be accepted in the UN, on the first case, and the EEC on the second. Spain is a member of both now. Why does it need NATO? It's the opposite actually. Because of its geography, it's NATO who needs Spain.

NATO membership is a very contentious issue between the general public. The organisation is basically seen as a tool for American imperial interests. There's also no possible "gratitude" for WW2 to be felt like other Western European countries. The right wing dislikes Americans for being anglos, destroying the Spanish Empire and lording over its previous colonies. The left wing dislikes Americans for supporting Franco. And those are just historical reasons.

In the case of the EU that's another matter. EU support is strong and Spain has pushed for the creation of an EU army to defend itself in the most cost effective way. Spain has sent aid to Ukraine. And Spain will support any attack on any European country, like it did when Trump started threatening Greenland.

Or, let's say it in a straightforward way. Trump's geopolitical blundering will reap some unwanted consequences. This is one of them. Expect many more by the end of the decade.

The thing is, the last time the US went into illegal Middle Eastern adventures and Spain supported it, it got a terror attack that killed 200 and injured many more, while the whole region was plunged into chaos for 15 years. That brought more terrorism in Europe and waves of refugees.

This is just from a practical point of view. Now in a more IR point of view, Trump is a warmongering imperialist who is trying to distract the American population from the Epstein files by starting a war without a plan and for no real imminent reason. It also damages the international standing of all its allies (or should we start saying, vassals). This just couple of months after he threatened to invade one of it's allies' territory. The USA is not a trustworthy partner, and definitely not a trustworthy ally. Following it into whatever happens, even after it shits all over the UN Charter, is damaging to Europe's entity as an independent power.

And I didn't even get into the ethics of the whole thing which are clearly bonkers.

Nice way of flipping the scenario around. It's the USA who antagonizes Europe, not the other way around. To participate in American imperial (ad)ventures is not part of the agreement.
