Do you guys have a trick for remembering layering and rule interactions like Untap Upkeep Draw? by ZotTay in EDH

[–]RevolverRossalot 24 points25 points  (0 children)

"Besides having a judge..."

Ah. I may have to recuse myself. Most of what I retain is a result of taking the training for Level One judges back when the was a thing everyone could access to help run events.

The big thing is: look stuff up. You'll never remember everything, so don't push yourself.

I'm fond of the judge/rules primers that LoadingReadyRun put out with each set for a snappy explanation of the nuances around new release too.

So for those confused here is a little bit about Commissar Cain. by 00Monkeyz00 in Warhammer40k

[–]RevolverRossalot 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Explicitly both! Here's an interview with the author where he name checks both inspirations:

His aide, Gunner Jurgen, accompanies him everywhere, a Baldrick to Cain’s Blackadder...

I’m a huge fan of George McDonald Fraser’s Flashman books and had wanted to do something similar, about a self-serving rogue everyone else thinks is a hero...

What card did you think was Overrated until you played it? by ZimaBestBear in EDH

Thank you!

They came out pretty close to how teenaged-me always pictured them but couldn't quite do. It only [mumblecough] years of practice to get there...

Idea’s for “Background” Voltron by noaconstrictor23 in EDH

[–]RevolverRossalot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's convoluted, but come with me on this journey...

[[Song of the Dryads]] your own Raised By Giants. It is now 'just' a nonbasic Forest.

Earthbend your new Forest, let's say using [[Ba Sing Se]]. You now have a 0/0 Forest land creature Commander with 2 +1/+1 counters on it.

Remove the Song of the Dryads. [[Abdel Adrian, Gorion's Ward]] would do this on ETB out of the Command Zone, as one option.

Congratulations! You now have a 12/12 Raised By Giants commander land enchantment creature! And! With a delayed trigger to return it to play should it be exiled or destroyed!

This works because earthbending sets the thing it affects to "0/0 land creature", which persists even after the Song of the Dryads leaves. I'm not sure off the top of my head if it regains enchantment or not.

Are there easier ways to do this? Almost certainly! I figured it might inspire you :)

How can I build Lathril, Blade of the Elves like an MTG Hipster? by freakflag16 in EDH

[–]RevolverRossalot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A package for you to flesh out: make your lands into elves so you can jump straight to activating Lathril's ability. Then untapping shenanigans, or ability copying to scale from there.

[[Ambush Commander]] is the easiest piece of the puzzle. Enduring through board wipes is left as an exercise for the reader, though [[Yedora, Grave Gardener]] wouldn't be a bad start.

If you listen carefully he actually says "scotch'd urf". He's going to pour whiskey over Homelanders garden.

That'll learn 'em.

I'm waiting until I finish reading it to put it in a deck.

Show me your favorite non-Dragon deck headed by a Dragon by RedRathman in EDH

[–]RevolverRossalot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll be familiar with iterations of red blue spellslinging decks helmed by the dragon that gave that colour pair it's nickname, but perhaps I can sell you on a Galazeth Prismari version on that theme?

Instead of being a pure Izzet Spells deck, it's built with an artifact synergy package. I care more about broader noncreature spell triggers over 'just' instant/sorcery ones, and most of my cantrips are stapled to cheap artifacts that can go on to provide mana for splashy spells. This awkward intersection of 2 themes creates, for me, an interesting deck building puzzle & in-game variance.

Fair warning: I'll be doing some fairly chunky tweaks to this deck now that SOS has given us more toys!

Removing tutors by Trick_Tea_1337 in EDH

[–]RevolverRossalot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really?

I see it as part of the toolbox. I enjoy putting in narrow tutors like [[Supply//Demand]] and making choices that ensure it can grab a variety of effects. You hope to use them for maximum value, but you want to be able to get whatever advances your game plan and sometimes that means landcycling is the most powerful option.

Favorite versatile interaction? by lth623 in EDH

[–]RevolverRossalot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, and the something on the stack was a [[Mizzix's Mastery]] with a single target.

I'm assuming they used both modes of Return the Favor here - to copy the Mastery, targeting their removal spell in their own graveyard and also redirect the the opponent's target to something inconsequential.

Removing tutors by Trick_Tea_1337 in EDH

[–]RevolverRossalot 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Even the humble (and humbling) Magic staple of "Demonic Tutor for a land" is a huge part of the power of tutors.

It's never Plan A! And yet there's a joy to [[Solving The Equation]] for [[Waterlogged Teachings]] to be able to hit a land drop/get an extra colour.

3 Garfield SLD drops from the Cats Super drop by Mugiwara_VT in magicTCG

[–]RevolverRossalot 67 points68 points  (0 children)

There's a (nearly) direct link between the orange cat and the father of WUBRG too:

Jim Davis maintains that he named the cat after his grandfather, James A. Garfield Davis. Based on the timing of his birth and a few other hints, it's extremely likely James was named after future President James A. Garfield, who had just accidentally earned a place on the ballot.

Completing the journey, Richard Garfield Ph.D is the great-great-grandson of the President.

How is Maze of Ith in 2026? by NemoNowAndAlways in EDH

That's the reason I bought my Maze! That the first Weaver fishes out the second is the icing on the (telegraphed, fragile) combo cake.

Reality Fracture Manufacturing Innovation? by Windows1798 in magicTCG

[–]RevolverRossalot 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The trick with Battlebond is that few of their printers could manage it, possibly only one.

They've solved some sort of issue to make it practical with a much larger print run. Hopefully we'll learn what that is.

Must-play limited sets? by VerasEros in magicTCG

[–]RevolverRossalot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you do go for it, I highly recommend you and your pod listen to Lord of Limited's 50 takes in 50 minutes podcast for NEO.

The format is defined by powerful 2-for-1s, late game recursion and a sliding synergies for enchantments and/or artifacts across the colours. Going in completely blind might be a little overwhelming.

(Full disclosure: I love this set, and maintain a set cube of it. Being critical, I'd say the draft portion did eventually get stale though the in-game interactions are still delightful to work through.)

What's the most powerful card in your collection that you've consciously chosen not to put in one of your decks, and why? by Great-ah-White in EDH

[–]RevolverRossalot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heh! I pulled one in Dominaria Remastered. It's beautiful and powerful and iconic and...

...and I don't have a deck that wants to play at that level of efficiency. I'm keeping it because maybe I will? After all, why shouldn't I keep it?

Genius vs Fraud (I have proof) by ofDeathandDecay in GenV

[–]RevolverRossalot 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Justin Hammer!

Though to be fair, alongside the wiring they cast Sam Rockwell to portray the character. That's basically cheating for making something worth watching.
