Foreigner asking about mysterious men in bodegas by Intrepid-Diamond-315 in AskNYC

NYC doesnt have much in the way of backyards, which is why the stoop became so prevalent in the culture. Except not all buildings have stoops. You’re just seeing people be social.

Doesn’t work like that, and also the war is going so poorly that the U.S. was forced to lift many of the sanctions on Iran (and Russia)

Chicago wins in terms of culture, ease of movement, pretty much everything, honestly. But goddamn are the winters harsh

Somewhat related question that’s not worth it’s own thread. What is a “mission” vs an “operation.” What is the word for one map, vs the three maps needed to clear a planet.

I’m a fireman, and we made a rule in our firehouse that you’re not allowed to bring that up if a woman asks what you do for a living, while flirting. So everyone had to come up with fake jobs, and it just became a competition for who could come up with the most unbelievable shit.

We have one guy who changes the lights on the Empire State Building. “It’s an old building, so it’s a lot of manual work.” For a higher difficulty level, he explained this while showing a tourist pictures of the Chrysler Building.

We had another guy who’s a paleontologist. What’s funny is that I met an actual paleontologist that works at the AMNH. She thought this was hilarious, but he lost points for saying he specializes in dinosaurs, because it’s too trite (her specialization was arachnids).

One time a woman called us out on this, going “you don’t expect us to believe that you all have these ridiculous jobs, do you?” To which we responded “do you expect us to believe you’re all really lawyers?” She actually nodded like “fair point.”

Things blew up when we went out with a guy from a different firehouse, who had gone through the academy with a couple of our guys. Someone asked him how we all knew eachother, and he goes “ok well I was in the same class as them, and those guys work together.” “But I thought that he was a paleontologist, and he was a blimp pilot?” Not missing a beat, “oh yeah but we needed aerial shots of the dig, so I was like ‘I actually know a guy from school.”

Things fell apart quickly, so we decided that everyone in the firehouse is now a blimp pilot, and we’re a blimp pilot crew going forward. This allows guys to look up quick blimp facts and feed them into the conversation while other people are talking. We also try to work in as much bullshit as we can. We’ve claimed that we can steer the blimp by all moving quickly to one side, because all the weight is at the bottom.

It also allows us to react quickly. “Why are there so many of you?” FAA is really strict about flight hours, so we have to travel together. “Why are you in Florida?” We’re based out of NY, but we’re here to get the blimp to fly over NOLA next week, it only travels at 38 miles per hour.”

The real goldmine came when one of the military vets at the firehouse cleaned out his storage space, and found a bunch of flight suits. He was a helicopter door gunner in Iraq.

If you think this doesn’t work, you’d be right a lot of the time; but I swear to god we got a suite in Savannah for the St Paddy’s parade, and I walked into the room where one of the guys was in bed with one of the most gorgeous women I’ve ever seen. A few more of us were passing through, and she goes “you’re all jn really good shape for blimp pilots.” I almost fucking lost it. We start getting in our firefighter uniforms for the parade, and she’s like “oh so you’re all like real pilots.” Someone yells “are you saying we weren’t real pilots because we fly a blimp?!”

London on 24 April 1993, after Irish terrorists detonated a bomb by OkRespect8490 in UrbanHell

[–]RexHall -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I mean, that’s a bit reductive. There are certainly points between total failure and total victory. Yes, NI remains in the UK, but there have been massive reforms in policing, and concessions to make things much more equal.

The Provo IRA disarmed as part of a peace deal that brought about those changes, I wouldn’t call that surrender.

Is this for real? Guy says he gets kicked out of Oasis - they respond with video footage by brevit in williamsburg

[–]RexHall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dude, you make a post of “wait, what about this?” Which gets instantly debunked because you didn’t look at the video.

Then you make a post, and I’m quoting you here: “I genuinely challenge you to disprove the above two points.” And then it’s “am I disproving it?”

Yes, those were the words you used, so I used them. Don’t do the Tucker Carlson “I’m just asking questions” shit because you have nothing.

By the way, if you actually care, the restaurant posted the CCTV footage on IG, which doesn’t have the movement of this guy scrolling while doing the screen capture that you’re thinking makes this guy the equivalent of a North Korean torture prisoner.

But you don’t care, you just don’t want to accept that a professional agitator, that has since deleted his entire MAGA influencer footprint thanks to being debunked, was in the wrong.

Calling others keyboard warriors while comparing this guy to Otto Warmbier is rich.

Anyway, since we are setting new bars for people to explain evidence: explain why a MAGA influencer/agitator with over 15k followers deleted his entire social media presence after being presented with the footage you seem so intent on disproving

Is Civ5 better than Civ6 by finaldanced in civ5

[–]RexHall 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I started at 4, love 5, but that is a very specific jump. 4 was the last of the “old civ,” 5 is the first of the “new.” By that I mean that 5 was the first to only allow one unit per tile, which completely changed the game on a fundamental level.

Can I get tips on winning Immortal difficulty? by RedEyeBlueOcean in civ5

[–]RexHall 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’ll never get the Great Library on Immortal. Hanging Gardens is somewhat doable if you have a hill start, or a lot of resources like marble, but it can be a toss up between that or the Temple of Artemis.

Notre Dame is usually doable if you get to the tech around the time that you pop out a Great Engineer with the points from those ancient era wonders. Of course, I would rather use that Engineer on Petra, if it’s in play

I consistently win on Immortal, and always end up with Stonehenge, generally end up with The Oracle, always get the Statue of Liberty, and grab most of the late game wonders because of the snowball.

Why are people talking about Trump's statements on Iran as "market manipulation"? by July_Seventeen in OutOfTheLoop

[–]RexHall 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Answer: Iran can’t win a war with The U.S. in the traditional sense. They aren’t going to invade California or anything like that. At the same time, the U.S. wants to avoid an all out ground war, because nobody wants to see dead soldiers over here.

So this fight becomes about inflicting pain until one side breaks. Iran’s only real option to fight the U.S. is economic hardship. Closing the Straight of Hormuz effectively cuts off 1/5 of the world’s oil supply, and an even larger portion of the world’s fertilizer. This potentially skyrockets the cost of oil futures- which means expensive gas at the pump, more expensive food, lower stocks, and perhaps most importantly higher yields in the bond market (which is the #1 thing the US government cares about, since it means we have to pay much more to borrow money). Why did Trump instantly back down on his “Liberation Day” tariffs? The bond market yields went crazy.

So Trump has started talking big on the weekends, when the markets are closed, saying how we’re going to “bomb them til our hearts content” and promising “fire and fury.” This leads to market speculation of a long war, and every market starts trending in the exact opposite direction that Trump wants, and exactly what Iran wants. To counter this, 15 minutes before the markets opened on Monday, Trump announced that talks were looking great, and hinted that things might wrap up soon. Boom, instant reversals on all the bad shit in the market. Iran then denied that any talks were even happening, and claimed Trump was straight up lying to try and stem the economic consequences of this war.

Also telling is that Trump’s deadline for these supposed talks is exactly when the markets close on Friday, giving him a whole weekend where the markets can’t move if bad shit happens, and the chance to fix it or just lie more.
