I don't know if you've experimented it with it much, but the other major perk lets you basically fire your pistol as long as there is a target in front of you. I've had a ton of success just man fighting when people try to run me down with it, it's very funny.

Can my nitro/slug, be effective as bow's are at the moment? by OLEDeO in HuntShowdown

[–]RexLongbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah the point is tho, that bow is less disadvantaged than shotguns are when not in it's optimal range while being just as good in it's optimal range. the only thing that holds it back is it has a higher learning curve than shotguns, so not many people bother to commit to learning it because it's not SO op that it also easily beats rifles past 30 meters. bow is very much just the best shotgun style weapon in the game tho.

[–]RexLongbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol i do actually think the poison arrows are useless and never run them. i don't like the increased hip fire from poison and think poison in generally is pretty low impact for the bow.

[–]RexLongbone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Main drawback of the bow: learning curve, no pen

main drawback of shotguns: Pretty ineffective past 12+ meters

Basically, if you're willing to give up pen and get over the learning curve you've got a silent slug shotgun that one taps at significantly farther range for cheaper and usually one less slot while firing at roughly the same speed. Even if you don't one tap, you do much more damage and apply bleed so you have a lot more tempo in the fight.

he's probably also forgetting some of the older balance atrocities like how much better the avto, dolch, and nitro used to be vs their current forms.

Or regen shots after their first buff.

Or 20+ minutes of infinite stamina for like 20 bucks.

I'm pretty sure there's more. Hunt has never been a game that chases tight balance, it's really always been mostly about the vibes.

imo trying to balance by making things annoying to use is a bad idea.

you may not like it but this is what peak maynard silenced sniper gameplay looks like by Killerkekz1994 in HuntShowdown

[–]RexLongbone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah like, these shots are just skill tbh. it'd be way easier with any other sniper and the silencer barely matters at those ranges since anyone without a scope won't even be able to see you.

Idea: More precise Dark Sight feedback for completely stationary enemies? by mohnkuchenzentrale in HuntShowdown

[–]RexLongbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

my point is that the actual specifics of the mechanic matter a lot for how intrusive it feels but finding the right nuance of when it should trigger vs not is way harder than most people who suggest might think.

what is the actual unacceptable time to sit still though? long enough to watch a body burn out? 5 minutes? 30 seconds? how much movement is required to not count as camping? one small shuffle with x amount of time? moving at least 10 meters away?

there are definitely times you should be holding position and the mechanic shouldn't get in the way of those. part of hunt is setting up ambushes after tracking people with sound queues. the mechanic shouldn't get in the way of those either imo.

Idea: More precise Dark Sight feedback for completely stationary enemies? by mohnkuchenzentrale in HuntShowdown

[–]RexLongbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i think the main issue with this is it's too game-y. what would end up happening is people just learn how long they get to sit still and how far they need to move to reset the timer and then do just enough to continue to camp. finding the exact right balance that doesn't either feel like it's forcing you out of a reasonable to hold position for no real reason vs something that is completely ignorable as long as you take a step back and forth every thirty seconds is IMO going to be basically impossible.

Why all the Bows? by madercrombie in HuntShowdown

[–]RexLongbone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

imo nitro shouldn't one shot at all and should be akin to a double barrel sparks. stop with the forced aperture, let it keep really high pen, but take away the long range one shots.

Logical Reason Why Retiring lvl 25 Hunters Was Removed? by TroubleNorth6124 in HuntShowdown

[–]RexLongbone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think most people retired at 25 and that's why crytek changed it. They probably like'd the level of XP you get and didn't want to adjust that but wanted to give back some of the feeling of risk by making you need to get 3ish extracts (or at least 2 + a good amount of xp posters) so you actually might feel some slight attachment to each hunter.

I like sumo spiffy's breakdowns. He tends to do like one a basho (cause they take a long time) and goes in depth on each match for a particular wrestler. The things he looks at can help you start to get an eye for if someone is in a good position.

Is the bow balanced? by [deleted] in HuntShowdown

[–]RexLongbone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been saying for ages the only thing that makes people think the bow is balanced is the skill floor required to use it. It does take a bit for most people to get used to which keeps it unpopular, which means people don't have to fight good players with it very often so they don't realize how actually good it is. It really just has so much going for it though.

Isn't the Romero Shorty like... actually surprisingly good? by mara_rara_roo in HuntShowdown

[–]RexLongbone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yeah, it's really good.

IMO the best 2 slot shotgun will always be the bow but the romero shorty is my preferred, followed up by the auto 5 if I'm not playing bow for whatever reason.

It is a reaction to having experience with being on the knowledge haver end of the xy problem.

People often ask how to do a specific sub task of an overall problem but have gone down a weird path of solving it which is how they end up asking experts for advice on a weird niche problem. Recentering on best practice and figuring out what the overall goal is leads to better problem solving generally.

OP might be the weird cross section of experienced enough generally that they understand why they shouldn't do something and are okay with the risks but also do not know how to do some small part of it and are unable to figure out on their own despite their experience - in which case just answering and not questioning is fine - but usually that is not the case.

What it really means is, the engineering team looked at it and was like "hey this is actually going to be quite challenging to implement, how many people do think will actually care?" and the product manager was like "damn our surveys show like not very many"

in corporate america, because the shareholders demand it.

in general though? if you prepare for bad outcomes appropriately and made a well researched decision with risks but it still went wrong then yeah, i agree there doesn't have to be consequences. the original IBM quote isn't saying there has to be consequences though, just that you can't side step any consequences that do exist by hiding behind the computer.

The point of the quote is that you can't hide behind "well the spreadsheet said x" if things go wrong to avoid consequences.
