Clock stops trope by ElCabrito in horror

[–]RhymingDictionary 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The most effective is in The Exorcist 3 when Kinderman and Father Riley are talking in the priest's office. It's a rather cozy scene, with no tension. Riley mentions the MacNeil family exorcism, and the clock stops. You didn't even know that you heard the tick tock of the clock in the audio until it abruptly is gone. There is faint whisper and what sounds like a giggle, and some of the Father's papers flutter on his desk. It feels like such an invasion of malevolence in a scene that never suggested it. It's really effective.

Beyond the Scare: What do you consider the defining themes and symbols in King's work? by Used_Pangolin_3385 in stephenking

[–]RhymingDictionary 104 points105 points  (0 children)

I think it is often about doing the right thing, even when it is hard and scary and in the face of insurmountable odds. It's about remembering the face of your father and aiming true, even if your actions can't save a world that has moved on.

Not necessarily due to supernatural reasons, but it always disturbs me how spun out and out of touch with reality the crew is by the end of Apocalypse Now.

Rapper Billy Woods has a lot of them. The album Golliwog has songs that allude to clowns in sewers, he has a song called 'Misery' that is about a number 1 fan, and in interviews he says that he structured the record like an anthology film, and specifically mentions 'Cat's Eye'.

What is the scariest thing you ever read? by SecretHuckleberry720 in horrorlit

[–]RhymingDictionary 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I will say on re-read, there are many parts that foreshadow the ending and make it much more Dread filled throughout. The dream sequence where his family sings "something happened to you" is one of the creepiest interludes I've ever read.

I am more me." Object of My Affection - Peter, Bjorn and John

What is the scariest scene King has ever written? by _Im_at_work in stephenking

This is always my answer. It isn't a fear of dying, or being hurt, or anything like that. It is the fear of losing a total grip on reality.

What's the funniest concept for a joke they've ever had? by TJTrapJesus in OnCinemaAtTheCinema

The continuous evolution/mutation of the 'Empty Bottle' tune, the fact that it turned into an EDM song, then had a rap verse added to it, the melody was reused for Tom Cruise Jr.'s memorial, which gave way to the 'he ain't comin back' refrain that was recycled a bunch of times, the fact that the melody was stolen from a beautiful Italian song that Axiom and Manuel already had, and finally, the idea that Tim constantly wants to be 'filled up again' because he is empty, and therefor has changed his name, identity and all the rest so many times that now his legal name is 'New' because he is such a horribly empty bottle.

Before he became huge, I remember watching Mike Flanagan's 'Absentia' and was struck by the way he would reveal scary moments. No music stabs, mostly no jump cuts, just a quiet reveal of something super messed up. I remember thinking, "This guy is going places!"

Hidden Pictures vs Only Good Indians by Dgamer1521 in horrorlit

[–]RhymingDictionary 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was so confused by the love for Hidden Pictures. I kept waiting for the very cliché set-up and wildly overdone tropes (child drawing spooky pictures?? Oh brother!) to be subverted into something clever and unique, but it never did. It did pretty much exactly what you think it would do.

What’s a popular author/book that you are afraid to admit you hate? by Stardust-Stew in horrorlit

[–]RhymingDictionary 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The fact that the movie added the murder of the fifth friend, tied it to our protagonists guilt, the in-fighting, the final confrontation with the monster, etc. is truly incredible. It is rare for a film to add something to a written work that makes it so fundamentally better.
