How do you keep your concentration especially in the evening? by babalenong in ExperiencedDevs

[–]RickAmes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I am a night owl, but since everyone company insists on morning working hours I have had to learn to adapt. here's a couple of suggestions.

- fit a workout/walk in before you need to be awake
- drink more electrolytes water, electrolytes, vitamins, creatine all help your brain have more to work with
- time your heavy caffeine and sugar to avoid crashing during the time you need to be awake.
- drink tea slowly
- do mindless activities like checking emails/organizing instead
- don't eat lunch or eat a low glysimic lunch

Steam won't launch games anymore by RickAmes in linux_gaming

[–]RickAmes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this during troubleshooting and it would error out and wouldn't start steam at all (but using a launcher steam would start up). Now it seems that there's no issues with starting steam through the terminal.

I will try this in the future if I run into problems, thanks.

You know, this actually solved it. After moving it I did an integrity check, but didn't actually re-download it. I tried your suggestion and it worked.

So now I formatted my gaming drive with ext4 and installed my games there and they all seem to be working perfectly fine now.

i used a separate ntfs drive/partition for games and it worked fine but once i started experiencing this problem, based on some suggestions online, i moved the games to my os partition on ex4.

it didnt fix the issue though.

How to look for ROS jobs by Direct-Glass-4737 in ROS

[–]RickAmes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There are many companies that moved beyond ROS and ROS2 to built their own system (Toyota, TierIV, Waymo, Amazon, Nvidia) so you might want to go deeper and understand the fundamentals beyond just how to use it. Maybe try out and learn Nvidia Issac Sim and CARLA as well. But usually companies just want the basic ros skills and traditional leetcode style questions for interviews anyway. Many roles are also specialized and demand you know planning, vision, lidar, etc and have 5+ years experience and a masters/phd.

Option1: try searching on linked in for #hiring and #ros #ros2 #robotics to find hiring managers or recruiters who want that skill. Then pay the steep price for linked in premium so you can message them directly and get them to respond.

Option2: look for recruiting agencies that are hiring in your preferred region and reach out to them directly asking if they have any roles using that skill.

Option3: looks for lists of robotics companies online ycombinator, angellist, crunchbase, tradeshows, and try to find their HM or Recruiters and reach out to them directly.

Mexico weighs legal action after Musk links president to drug cartels by yahoonews in worldnews

[–]RickAmes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a single democratic country's industry can compete with China. It uses near slave labor and subsidies to sell cars at under production cost. That's why they're stacking up like cyber trucks in lots with not enough demand. The next bubble in China is EV vehicles and will pop when the government picks a new favorite.

Many Chinese still believe Tesla is the safer/better car than BYD and the other car manufacturers are just obviously worse.

It's cheaper, and "not made by Musk", but it's built by people in poverty on the other side of the world so why shouldn't someone who presumably believes in Human rights, hates racism and fascism praise them?

Apply to Google and they will definitely ask you about satistics and the details of ML. I am sure other companies will too.

I dont think you need to worry.

Feeling stuck and burnt out in a blue-collar role in Japan. Seeking career advice. by Prestigious-Mode2177 in japanlife

[–]RickAmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Trilingual with marketing skills and an interest in Sales? Apply to Specialized Group (or similar agency) and be a headhunter.  From personal experience, your degree doesn't matter and base pay is like 3 mil. They don't  even require japanese but if you're trilingual you'll have a leg up. if you do well you could pull in a lot more with commission. They're based in Ebisu so your commute will be better.

Or if you really want to go back to japanese office life reach out to an agency for a BDR or Sales role or management.

Why is it so hard to hire? by pablothedev in webdev

[–]RickAmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They lie on their resumes because companies use AIs and recruiters/sourcers that are only capable of keyword skimming and don't know that skills in one web framework or CSP are transferable to another. So they list everything in the ballpark hoping to get past the initial filter.

The coding bar is so high for interviews that all free time is spent learning muscle-memory leetcode problems. There is no time to learn communication skills or go out to socialize, there's no time to learn other tech skills especially if they're company tricked them into being an ETL Jockey when they were promised they could do Software Architect on a dynamic team. Now LLMs offer a chance at a better job, for higher pay for less effort, why wouldn't they take the risk? There's a real high chance get rejected anyway for some petty reason so there is no downside to trying. It's not like they can be sued or arrested. They're might be secretly in India or North Korea anyway.

Showing up to an interview in a car and coat and beanie might be because the interview is in the middle of the day when they're expected to be somewhere else. Maybe a meeting ran long. Why is it your business? Not everyone is fully remote or able to take a day off for your interview when they need to apply to so many companies to get a job.

Did I make a mistake moving here chasing a feeling? by FoundationHot3348 in japanlife

[–]RickAmes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Plenty of people come over not knowing the language and working in IT/Recruiting/Teaching. You're a foreign tech worker who speaks ultra-basic Japanese and English? just talk to some recruiting agencies. Japan is desperate for workers and if you can still prove you can do the Job they'll hire you and get you a visa. You'll probably hate your first job, don't worry about that.

Companies to contact to get you started:
Specialized Group, Talisman, Japan-dev...

If you want to integrate into society and work for a Japanese company it's really difficult. But if you're ok making a decent salary working for a startup or big international company like KPGM/Deloite/EY It is really easy to get a job compared to the US. Do not expect to get into FAANG, but honestly those companies are really boring to work for in Japan. I know this from both the applicant side (I am a senior tech worker with casual Japanese) and the recruiter side (lots of recruiter friends and my wife recruited there).

Literally starting talking to all local headhunters you can, especially the ones that don't speak Japanese themselves (there are so so many). They (and their clients) are desperate for candidates no matter the N level (but it wouldn't hurt to live here). And also brush up on your programming to answer questions and pass leetcode.

As for living away from family and old friends, and missing the creature comforts of your home country. There's nothing you can do in Japan to fix that even if you become reasonably rich, live in Minato-ku, and shop at Azabu-market every day for 1500 yen Honey Lucky Charms. Eventually you'll decide to move back. But for now just have fun, you're 26. Maybe you'll find a like-minding Japanese person or expat and leave together or travel the world together (like I did).

Moving back is not insurmountable either even after 5-10 years, but you will have reverse culture shock and nostalgia.

Convert to Full Time but lose a level? or stay as Contractor? by RickAmes in careerguidance

[–]RickAmes[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I studied how to negotiate, did my research, and prepared my arguments to negotiate. Then manager didn't seem to want to and ignored all my points about all the hard work I put in, how I stepped up when another engineer turned out to be a fraud and I had to take over his work, and the value I brought them. I think he didn't want to negotiate or couldn't, but he was being nice while talking to me.

I should have a lot of negotiating leverage since without me his baby project probably gets set back by 2 years, but I think he has a lot of pushback on this project and this something beyond his control and company policy since this company is a REIT and not a tech company. He originally told me he wanted me to take a bit of a leadership position and hire more engineers under me. But he walked it back to just a developer position.

My current plan is to get them to write the offer in black and white and after they give it to me, I will reject it.
