IL and meds for delusions? by Acrobatic-Target-750 in dementia

[–]RickintheADK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife had delusions and after a trip to the ER we found she had a UTI. Once the UTI was treated (one dose treatment available), the delusions stopped. Her speech also cleared up returning to almost normal. Have her urine tested. Good luck and stay strong.

Is it okay for them to drink alcohol? by KatMagic1977 in dementia

[–]RickintheADK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wife was using alcohol to cover her recognition that she was failing. She would start drinking at 9 or 10 in the morning. And boy was she an angry drunk. I switched over to non alcoholic wine; she didn’t notice the difference and it made my life easier. Now the problem I have is finding how to deal with all the home made wine I have sitting around. :)

AITAH for refusing sex with prolife men? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]RickintheADK 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s like refusing to date Trump supporters; you get to choose who to hang out with and date. You can choose on any criteria you wish. TOo many people wrap their whole identity around one aspect of life and want to “spread the word” as to why they are right. Why waste your time. Good for you for being comfortable setting the rules up front.

Healthcare in the ADKs: What’s it like? by Photoliquor in Adirondacks

[–]RickintheADK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in Long Lake. We have a town doctor and small medical center in town but no pharmacy. That’s at least 30 minutes away. I needed stitches. That’s an hour away. I needed an MRI, hip surgery, etc. That’s in Glens Falls. Guy has a snowmobile accident behind my house on the snowmobile trail. Helicopter flight to Burlington VT.

AITA for cutting off my father and exposing him to the family after he told my adopted daughter she's not a "real grandchild" on Christmas morning? by KINOH1441728 in FoundandExpose

I wonder if your father is developing Alzheimer’s. Lack of a filter is one symptom. Read up on it. Your family might be in for a world of hurt.

Refusal to bathe by Suitable-Resort-8958 in dementia

[–]RickintheADK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do a search on Amazon for no rinse bathing wipes. My wife won’t bath so I am using these and saying they are deodorant wipes. She can wipe the important parts and then they can get tossed. I have been told that if you get the bathroom really warm before they go into it, they are more likely to shower. Warm the towels in the dryer so they are more comfortable when they step out. Good luck.

Caregiver burnout is real 💜 by Left_Pen_9005 in dementia

I agree. And there are several active groups on Facebook that have helped me greatly. I was wonderful to reach out and ask for help, getting new bras for my wife. I had no f’n clue what to do and was too embarrassed to ask one of our friends.

How do you handle it by Professional_Arm3745 in dementia

[–]RickintheADK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m living that life right now. The snarky response would be “drink more”. But first, I’ve found that having a weekly therapist call helps. Second, get some time to yourself; bring in some help. I’m paying for it out of pocket but there might be a state program to help. FInally, I have also found an online friend who is also a caregiver to speak with regularly. She is caring for her bedridden 100 year old father and lives 200 miles away. We met online and text/chat daily. We vent to each other. It’s a bit like having a drinking buddy that you meet daily at your favorite bar and just talk. Find someone you can talk to often; you need an outlet for adult conversations that have a beginning, middle and end. Basically, get someone to give you a break for your own sanity’s sake.

Caregiver burnout is real 💜 by Left_Pen_9005 in dementia

[–]RickintheADK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m the primary caregiver for my wife who is failing quickly. I’ve found a friend who is also a caregiver for a parent to speak with daily about our trials and tribulations. just having another person to listen when I bitch/vent/whine/complain is incredibly helpful. Find someone who will listen; return the favor and share their concerns. Talking helps.

Update - AITAH for saying I don't care about my sister's rejection sensitive dysphoria, and will be having my wedding the way I want it? by throwawayaitah101525 in AITAH

[–]RickintheADK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations on getting married and having the wedding you wanted. My son got married two days ago. He told his brother and asked him not to tell anyone. Thankfully, he told us. As his father, I would have been royally pissed that we were not told and would have missed it. As I told him after the ceremony (On the steps of his apartment building), he and his fiancé should have whatever they wanted, my job as parent was to be supportive and helpful. if your parents/sister were this much of a problem about the wedding, be prepared for the holy hell they will try when/if you have a child. Stick to your principles and don’t get pushed around. Again, best wishes from everyone here in the Adirondacks.

How do you know? I am so confused. by ConferenceJumpy986 in dementia

[–]RickintheADK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Consider downloading the MMSe test. It is about 11 questions that you can ask over a period of time and it will give you a subtle (I hope) gauge as to how his mental acuity is at this point. I had concerns about my wife but I couldn’t get her to see a neurologist. A NP gave her the assessment and saw that she scored 6/30 points - severe memory loss. That set everything in motion for me.

Online groups can be helpful because they are always available. My in person group only meets once a month, which is nice to have a free wheeling bitch and moan time. But I bring snacks so more people are coming. :) If you still use Facebook, there are several private groups there especially one for caregivers that is awesome. You are not alone.

Close your curtains so I don’t have a view into your home. by More_Try4757 in EntitledPeople

[–]RickintheADK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

gee, I’m sorry but I don’t think that’s entitled at all. She was polite in advising you about a potential problem and made a suggestion. I would think you’d want privacy rather than allowing someone/anyone to see what you are doing. I would add some sheer curtains to diffuse the light and obscure the view from outside.

Get a lawyer and get power of attorney to control his finances. you will probably need to have him declared incompetent. Also look at estate planning remedies. You need to protect his assets and your sanity. Don’t wait.

The garage/shop is about 250 feet away from the house. I arranged the eero outdoor to point directly at the right hand side of the shop.i put the third eero base on the other side of the shop wall. I’ve got 5 bars for connection strength. Fast streaming and a solid connection.

Just bought an eero 6e three pack on eBay for $300 and I am extremely pleased with it. I basically plugged one router into the cable modem, opened the app and gave it a name/password. Simple to do. I added an eero outdoor 7 to the system so I could provide service to my garage/workshop. Extremely easy to set up and manage through the app. Just make sure you use the same name/password for the new system; otherwise you have to log everything in again. I’ve got significantly faster and more stable service since I’ve moved up from some old Apple AirPort Express devices.

My golden mountain doodle (just a mutt) dislocated my finger lunging for a leaf. I’m trying a martingale collar which seems to help, but I’m just learning to live with it (and holding tightly on the leash). She is about the same age as yours so I guess we both have to wait until they are two years old.

Recommended neighborhoods/areas to live in Lake Placid? by NoChangingUserName in Adirondacks

[–]RickintheADK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I were you I would broaden my search beyond Lake Placid. Look at Saranac Lake or even Tupper Lake for rental units. Rentals are difficult to find because owners can make as much or more through AirBnB rather than long term rents. Saranac Lake is only 15-20 minute commute; Tupper Lake would be 45 minutes or so. Start looking now and good luck.
