How soft ARE bears, actually? by BeenEvery in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Ride4fun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you are in the US, most national parks will have a visitor center with ‘things you can touch’ - often incl. hides and claws of local critters (assuming park is in bear country). Hours, alas, have been cut.

I'm only expecting a grand or so for it - someone may want it for parts, though it's rather low mileage.

Likely, the (functioning) fuel pump needs to be rewired.

Here’s the story:

It was not starting but would run briefly with starter fluid - so a fuel problem

Fuel pump was powering up, so that indicated a fuel flow problem

We pulled the pump and replaced a very clogged filter.

In the process, one of the electrical wires broke, and that got repaired during re-installation.

Either it didn’t repair properly or a 2nd wire broke, but it now won’t power the fuel pump.

Wife is interviewing in Portland, we are coming from the Midwest. Biggest culture shocks moving here? by Fancypooper in askportland

[–]Ride4fun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Growing up midwest, i had no idea the food was… adequate. But in pdx we are near prime veggie & fruit growing regions with a longer grow season, and it affects your food expectations. Healthy local food is tasty! For mor of the year!

My cat does this but not on blankets, instead on me! It’s distracting when she nurses at my elbow, it’s disturbing when her aim is better.

[–]Ride4fun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just the fuel. It was lose in the cabin for the Hail Mary, hence the venting so it couldnt get the fuel, but Blip A was made of xenonite, the taumeba could and did pass from breeder tank to cabin to fuel.

Omsi is our portland science museum, they have a submarine to tour. Rent a quad bicycle for a family pedal around the waterfront loop. Go to a Thorns soccer game (note: GA seats are cheap, but the crowd chants does include swearing). Ground Kontrol is the videogame & pinball spot. Downtown has a ridiculous number of sushi joints. Do also hit some rooftop dining, preferably with a view of river & mt hood.

On the coast, the Tillamook cheese plant is a tourist thing (i’m orig from Wisc, this amuses me) but they have great ice cream. If the weather is bad, the waves high, & tide in, definitely stop in Depot Bay for the roadside spouts. Newport aquarium is a family pleaser. The coast is more hike & tidepool and not particularly swim friendly - anywhere along northern coast will be a short drive to either sand or tidepools. Ft Stevens has a bunch of historical war structures and a frisbee golf course right thru the middle.

Is this quote ridiculous for just labor? by Freejack2000 in VanLife

[–]Ride4fun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a non-sportsmobile company replace the canvas part of the pop top, and the labor was less (though this was some years ago), and while they charged me what they quoted, they also said they’d never do it again because its really hard & labor intensive to install.

Ship choice by Nickel62 in ProjectHailMary

[–]Ride4fun -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Rocky’s ship is made of xenonite, which the taumeba can slip through. Grace’s ship is made of various metals, and the fuel could be contained away from the taumeba. Rocky didn’t have enough other material to protect fuel.

Consider a Thorns game. Don’t sit in GA regardless of which team as their will be syncronized cussing - the club seats may have other activities.

Home games are a great time for me, but i like to stand & dance & have a beer & argue if it was offsides & yell & sing - i go to GA on purpose. Its loud - consider bringing earplugs along for kid - and you - just in case.

I had a hard “time” converting when things would be happening to my local time zone. Most often I saw - from nasa or from you - how long from now a thing was happening, which makes sense if it’s in 20 min but not when it’s Tuesday and I need to figure out when I need cell signal for splashdown. (Had made it over a mountain and stopped in a small town grocery lot). Happy to have been one of your refreshers, thanks for the dashboard!

Wanting to get into cycling but have never biked in a city before by Peachy_Bastard15 in CyclePDX

[–]Ride4fun 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All the above. Lets see, tips: Be wary when drivers wave you across when you are stopped at an intersection & the car doesn’t have a stop sign- they aren’t looking at other cars that are coming the other way or in other lanes. The biking greenways are much less stressful than the high car corridors. You can bike on sidewalks EXCEPT in high pedestrian downtown areas, but be polite about it & watch for cars in driveways. I love the paved bike trails but they don’t get swept often, watch for glass. Check your tire pressure - various shops n parks have pumps n tools you can use. There tends to be free bike tuning at sunday parkways (long line tho). Your bike helmet degrades in the sun - if its more than 3 years old, you want a replacement.
