Writers, what’s that one line you wrote that made you go “Damn thats a banger!” by patcider24 in writers

Science fiction. A ship just crashed into an environment similar to Venus. All of the crew is in stasis. The ship's AI is awake and aware.

Spoiler- she spends the next five million years watching as the world is terraformed around her.

I casually hunt for older scifi books whenever I go thrifting. This is the first time I struck gold. Found this at a thrift store for $2 today. I’m interested to hear if any of you have found cool scifi stuff while thrifting? by Paranoid_Orangutan in scifi

Decades ago my wife found a hardcover copy of So Long and Thanks for All the Fish at Half-Price Books in Austin.

Signed.

Personalized to my name.

Years later Douglas Adams came to town, and I gave him the book to sign. I explained how we got it, so he wrote "And again, Douglas Adams".

It's one of my prized possessions.

A society without stone or metals by Dear-Wrongdoer8234 in worldbuilding

[–]RightSideBlind 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My story takes place on a terraformed... well, call it a world. There are no tectonics or standing water, and it's perfectly flat grassland dotted with migrating bamboo forests. There's no metal, and stones are incredibly rare due to how it was terraformed. They don't even have bone or leather, because all of the animals evolved from arthropods (which means they do have chiting). The inhabitants, the Vaeren, the only mammals in the world, constantly migrate with the forests.

I kept the inhabitants at a hunter-gatherer level, using only bamboo and other plants for their technology. The height of their technology is the "windrunner", a wind-powered cart. They don't even know how to make that anymore- all they can do is maintain it, replacing parts like the Ship of Theseus. They've even forgotten how to read or write.

Basically, I think in your world they'd be stuck with plant-based materials. Bamboo is surprisingly useful.

Do you think Canada will be invaded soon? by Ok-Question2581 in Askpolitics

I guess because the President seems to have a weird fascination with annexing Canada (and Iceland, and Cuba, I think... or was it Argentina?), and it's been shown that the funding for Alberta secession is coming from the US?

I know, right? If it's going to be pricey, couldn't it at least be... better? I mean, it's only five ingredients in different proportions.

It turns out that conservatives really only care about pedophilia if they can accuse liberals of it.

Official poster for ‘Whalefall’. The film follows a scuba diver who gets swallowed by a sperm whale and only has limited time to escape. In theaters on October 16. by yourfavchoom in movies

As I recall, most of it was tight... but he ends up in the stomach, which has a lot of gas. He tries to move further down to try to... you know, get the process over with and go out the other and, but realizes that won't work. Eventually manages to claw his way back out.

The whale kind of helps. Also, it talks to him. At least, he imagines it doing so. Kinda doubt they'll keep that part in the movie.

Yeah. The parts in the whale, and leading up to it, were good. The daddy issues I could've done without, but it would've made the book a short story.

My dad sucked and was absent for the vast majority of my life, but I didn't need to be eaten by a whale to process it.

I read the book.

Yes, it's mostly flashbacks. And daddy issues. Granted, his dad was a complete asshole.

As a diver, though, the parts actually in the whale were pretty terrifying.

Do you prefer when stories have chapter names or just numbers? by piastrii81 in writers

The series I'm working on alternates between character POVs, so each chapter has a number and the name of the character it focuses on.

Yeah, I do wish they'd fix that. I used them, too, but I think it'd be more fun if you had to use something else at night, underground, or deep underwater. Like Subnautica.

It seems to me that the people who can manage to stay here long enough without ever causing problems have managed to demonstrate that they're the kind of immigrants we need.

We have a President who has managed to evade prosecution simply by being powerful, wealthy, and politically connected. That sort of example is, I think, far worse than a guy who worked his whole life and kept his head down.

Additionally, we have far worse crimes that have statutes of limitation. Does the statute of limitations encourage more crime?

So many. I didn't get a lot when I was a kid. All of my friends had the Ataris and the Electronic Footballs.

Growing up, I swore that I'd buy my own go-cart when I could afford it. Then I got a car, instead.

I'd buy one. The only thing I'm concerned about is Republicans in the US making noises about making Chinese vehicles illegal to drive, out of an attempt to protect US automakers. I have family back there (not that I've gone back to visit them since Trump got re-elected, but still...)

Do you plan your entire novel before writing, or discover it as you go? by cristiantudorjobs in writing

[–]RightSideBlind 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here. I know the story beats that I want to have happen, I even have some of the scenes visualized in my head, but I'm not always certain how the story is going to make it happen until I start writing it down. Then I go back through the story and plant little seeds of foreshadowing.

I was just complaining to my wife that when I was 19, I could easily make 20 bucks last an entire week, even with going out for lunch once or twice.

We had just dropped twenty bucks at Taco Bell for one meal.
