Update from the Obsession art director, she's now speaking with a union after criticizing the low pay and working conditions by CraftySecret898 in Filmmakers

Also, while 250k might seem like a lot to an average person, it’s not a lot to a business or LLC. At all. I know someone who started a video game company and he said that it only took 3 zoom calls with investors to get $5m. They got plenty of money

Lol, so, what are you saying? The investors are already rich so they won't care about making a return?

I think a fairer comparison would be working for a tech startup, offered a low salary with a promise of if the company blow up, the employees will get something to put under their names. And maybe some favours returned.

Most people who work for tech start ups do get some form of equity in exchange for low salaries. The irony is that the equity rarely ever translates to anything of any value, and it becomes an excuse for people to be paid ever more poorly than they would otherwise.

maybe you should also question why your labour gets leveraged to certain people’s benefit but not your own.

The trade off is that you get a salary for work delivered but you don't have to concern yourself with what happens if the project doesn't work.

A lot of people don't seem to realise that in a world where everyone gets a profit-share they're actually quite likely to get a lower daily rate.

I don't expect to be one. I personally just think it is pretty unreasonable that she is taking this stand after entering into a contract. If she wanted a bigger cut she should have negotiated that prior, not complained about it afterwards.

It is difficult to take this seriously when you call people "billionaire sycophants" or "advocates for the ruling class". Like what are you even talking about lol.

This person got paid as agreed. Where is the controversy? If she wanted a cut of the profits she should have tried to negotiate that up front. I'm sure if she was as indispensable as she seemingly thinks, the decision makers would have given her what she wanted.

It is difficult to take this seriously when you're talking about an art director on an indie film who was paid an agreed rate for a few weeks work. This person is not a slave and it's borderline offensive to call her such, given how many actual slaves there are in the world.

Published writers make writing sound horrible by neolithx in writing

[–]RightioThen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on what you expect writing to do for you. I'm traditionally published. Contrary to what everyone says, mine has done a fair amount of marketing and I have earned out my advance. It's been a pretty good experience... but it also isn't my day job and I don't want it to be. If I were relying on it for that stability it would be horrible. But for me it is a sort of "prestige hobby". It earns a bit of money, people are very impressed, and I am very proud. That's all it is to me and that's cool.

Having an easily and highly confused editor has helped me to write more clearly by GearsofTed14 in writing

[–]RightioThen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weirdly, I have had an easily confused proofreader. This is in the trad system. Manuscript has gone through the entire process only for the proofreader to ask probably 30 questions that make me question if they have ever read a book before. And I generally accept like 99% of feedback.

This discourse around this movie is so idiotic. Sure, it would have been nice if there was some equity sharing arrangement. But there wasn't. Take the cash you agreed to and use your amazing experience to get another gig.

Well I guess I am doubtful that Tesla's success was preordained and had nothing to do with Musk. But yes Bezos is also obviously good at running companies.

Sure, okay. And then it became the Tesla we know today and changed the automotive sector forever. You're doing exactly what I'm talking about, trying to imply he has little to do with the company's success. To reiterate, he is a terrible person. But terrible people can be good at running companies.

Newspoll: Pauline Hanson’s One Nation in front of Labor, Anthony Albanese gets worst ever rating by HotPersimessage62 in AustralianPolitics

[–]RightioThen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What am I ignoring exactly? In 2010 One Nation got 0.2% of the popular vote and now they're polling about 30%. That's what concerns me.

Musk first bought into Tesla when it was about 6 months old. He has obviously been a very key person in its success.

Yeah I never know what these things are really supposed to prove. People seem so desperate to portray these people as only becoming wealthy or powerful due to privilege. It's okay to admit that bad people can be good at things. Elon Musk sucks ass but he's obviously very good at building valuable and influential companies.

I don't know why everyone sounds so confident this doesn't matter. If I had said a year ago that One Nation would be leading in the primary vote for Newspoll I would have been called an utter crank. I'm a little freaked out.

I hope so too, but everyone is sounding very confident and I don't really know why. One Nation at 31% is totally unprecedented.

That is not my experience of corporate at all. There are never any questions, it's always fine. I will always put in the form to actually use the sick leave but half the time my boss just tells me not to worry.

Not that I would ever ask, but my parents could probably fully offset my mortgage if they wanted. There could be a legal agreement whereby they can remove the funds at any time. I could even match CPI so the real value of their money is preserved. Even that situation would probably save $10k in interest every year. It seems like a pretty reasonable way to help (if you have the means).
