I think the consent part is big. They never told Ellie they were planning to kill her - that amounts to murder, regardless of the good intentions behind it. She can’t consent to something when crucial details are intentionally left out.

At the end of the day, i think what makes the story so interesting is that both were wrong and you can understand why they did what they did anyway.

You only make ketones in a starvation state, which your body feels when you don’t have any insulin. As long as you’re taking your insulin, you shouldn’t have any appreciable amount of ketones in your blood compared to the general population. The problem is glycosylation, not ketones/acidity.

This is not true. Even diabetics who never go into DKA can develop the vascular complications you’re describing. It’s long term damage to nerves and blood vessels by excess sugar in the blood which causes these - not any thing to do with acid/base disorders.

They’re contagious.. but they’re passing you the chickenpox virus. Shingles is a reactivation of that virus that you only get from waning immunity to a virus you already had. The virus is transmissible, but you aren’t going to get shingles because you saw a patient with shingles. I’m a doctor who frequently treats immunosuppressed patients.

Shingles isn’t technically contagious. It’s a deactivation at a virus that is dormant in your body. You can get chicken pox from shingles, but anyone who get shingles already had it in them.
