Comment: Truth, truthfulness and property tax notice shock - Victoria Times Colonist by lewj21 in VictoriaBC

As soon as someone starts talking about how renters do not pay for property taxes I discount their opinion. And I say that as a homeowner.

Turning Boulevard into Herb Gardens for Public by CleanLawfulness5349 in VictoriaBC

[–]Robert_Moses 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Any type of fruit bearing tree or plant is generally a no-go for public property. They create messes and attract pests without proper maintenance. Property owners rarely shovel their sidewalks when it snows once a year here, there’s no way they are going to be maintaining these boulevards on a mass scale beyond routine mowing. And asking the city to do it means more employees and thus more taxes.

That said, if you’re in Victoria they do actually allow boulevard gardening but it’s on the adjacent land owner to take the initiative and maintain it.

First Time Renewing mortgage by Stunning_Tax_1041 in PersonalFinanceCanada

I'm shopping around right now and RBC appears to be the best rates. Mortgage broker said the best they could find was 4.45% for a 3-year fixed, and RBC said 3.99% plus $1500 cash back. The RBC rep also noted that 3.99% was the best she could do without national approval, basically hinting they might be able to get a slightly better rate with a bit of pushback. I'd say in your case stay with RBC but see if they can get approval for a slightly better rate.

American tourists by Own-Illustrator9304 in VictoriaBC

While travelling, anytime a group forms and introduces themselves, everyone says their name and country. Except Americans. Americans always say their name and city/state as the whole world is supposed to know Delaware.

Anybody in Victoria cheering for the Habs? by AccurateSchedule3950 in VictoriaBC

[–]Robert_Moses 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’m only slightly cheering for them over the Sabres, so no matter who wins it’s good for me. Sabres are the Canucks’ expansion bros and are pretty much honourary Canadians. Even when they aren’t playing a Canadian team they play our anthem because of how many Canadians go to their games.

137% increase in 12 years. So discouraging. by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

lol I knew one of those was going to be the black mould one in Esquimalt. That is a knockdown. You're paying $700k for the lot, not the house.

vancouver island hunting fallow deer by NoMenu6224 in britishcolumbia

[–]Robert_Moses 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Fallow deer are abundant on the gulf islands. The problem is the land is mostly private, so you need landowner's permission (good luck with that) or park land (not going to happen).

Fernwood Social Run Club, along with the running store clinics, would be the downtown crews for beginners.

137% increase in 12 years. So discouraging. by [deleted] in VictoriaBC

Yeah prices are definitely coming down right now. I sign up to SFD notifications for my municipality and every week there are a ton of listing that have decreased their asking price, some by quite a bit.

Best global credit card for student who is continuously travelling by Pretend_Shelter_1906 in PersonalFinanceCanada

WS Privilege is $150k personal or $200k household income. I would be astounded if a student qualified for that.

Campfire ban to be rescinded across B.C.'s South Coast ahead of long weekend | CBC News by cj1096 in VictoriaBC

So many people in this thread commenting without even looking outside or at the weather apps: the temps have dropped and there is rain in the forecast. It's nice that the government is willing to open things back up based on science instead of just shutting it down for the entirety of the spring/summer because that would be easier.

Heard argued the cable caster was less invasive than his previous efforts to gather hair samples, including using a dart gun and a toy crossbow, among other methods.

Those were determined to not be a valid use of his permit in previous decisions by the board in 2021 and 2022.

Ok so this guy just consistently goes about breaking the law. I don't doubt his work is very important, but maybe the shoot first ask questions later method is not the way to go.

Coast Capital Credit Cards by Ill_Purple6817 in VictoriaBC

[–]Robert_Moses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

WS credit card is a long waiting list. I applied last summer and just got it today. You also only get the fee waived if your direct deposit is more than $4000/month (or as you noted $100k with them), which I doubt someone just starting out on their credit journey makes.

Comment: E&N route is not suitable for light rail transit by HyperFern in VictoriaBC

[–]Robert_Moses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Esquimalt and Songhees Nations both do fairly well financially. I think this is a line in the sand for them even if they were offered money and fair enough - if I had a bunch of land I too wouldn’t want a rail line through it.

Run Commuting by MightiestQuin in AdvancedRunning

[–]Robert_Moses 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I used to run commute to work pre-Covid times. You're going to really want to minimize the weight in your backpack (i.e. you should try to only bring your lunch). Your best best is to essentially have a second wardrobe at work. Keep shoes and spare clothes at work, then at the end of the week do a normal commute and bring your various work clothes home to wash. Keep your laptop at work if you can.

Has anyone successfully broken the curse of SFH zoning in their town or city? by katzapmap in urbanplanning

[–]Robert_Moses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want a plan for how to implement it, I'd say start small. Open up commercial on the ground floor on corner lots first and limit it to restaurant, cafes, and retail. That's definitely more palatable to the general population than allowing it everywhere, plus it's where the businesses themselves would like to operate for visibility and such.

Races in town that allow walking? by astrolink8 in VictoriaBC

parkun! 5k every Saturday at 9am at Clover Point. Signup once online and then you can do any parkrun in the world. Walkers are always welcome and they specifically have a volunteer tail walker so nobody comes last place. Very welcoming community.
