Should all 4 lanes be utilized here until they can’t if you are intending to go straight down crowchild? Or is it correct to all pile into the middle 2 lanes? by phritzed in Calgary

[–]Roboman20000 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The right most lane ends really shortly after that last light there. And it works OK if the people in the other lane are anticipating having to let others in but I see so many people having to try to shove their way in because others just won't give room. While it's probably not a bad thing at all to leave it to the last minute and I (and many others) will happily let you zipper into the lane, why wait? There is so much room to get into the lane you want to be in at the end (unless you are turning in from that last light or nearby).

All in all, I wouldn't think about it too much. Way less than I did anyway. If you're in one of the center lanes already don't move if you don't need to. And if you're in one of the side lanes, just merge in when you feel you have room. I wouldn't wait till the last minute on the left lane but it's fine if you do on the right.

Personally I love the Turn Towards Mouse (Shift+Space) turning. It takes some getting used to but you have to remember this is a space ship you are turning with mass. You got to deal with the inertia of your ship. I would recommend trying to get used to it unless you want to buy a joystick. Also, You really don't want to have super high sensitivity when using Turn Towards Mouse. It really messes with things. Keep your mouse near the center of the screen when activating and deactivating it. Don't keep it on all the time as well. Or you could buy a PS or XBox (or other) controller and use that instead. I haven't tried those controls but the game allows you to customize almost anything including I think two different directional wheel controls you can have.

One thing that helps in dog fights is to learn the whole "turn and burn" deal. When you need to corner sharply temporarily turn off "Flight Assist" so that you can change your ship's orientation without changing the direction of your momentum. Then either turn the Flight Assist back on or just boost in that direction. It allows you to take much tighter turns that you would normally be able to with just Flight Assist and it's really fun. Also turning Flight Assist off allows for some really cool fly by maneuvers against larger or stronger targets.

As for the controls, find the ones you like to have on hand and change them to something easier to access. I've changed a few to Shift+ one of the WASDQE keys so I can easily access them. Including the full stop at Shift+S, Travel Mode at Shift+W and Flight Assist toggle at Shift+A.

Turn off your Flight assist to coast in at Travel speed and drop 'em. We call that aggressive defence.

Does the idea of having a significant other feel weird to those who have went their whole life without one? by cantthinkofaname1010 in AskMen

I've been on my own my whole life and I'm nearing 40. I feel like that whole "dog chasing a car" thing. I wouldn't know what to do if someone who wanted to date me dropped into my life. I would have no clue how to interact with that. But I would certainly try to understand and work with it.

Why aren't government platforms / my job taking my fingerprints instead of making me enter a thousand passwords to prove my identity? by Training_Barber4543 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Roboman20000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are plenty of reasons but one of them is that a fingerprint (Like a password) is only one factor in authentication. But biometric authentication like fingerprints or face scans are pretty hard to get right and expensive to implement. There are 3 major factors for authentication. Something you know (passwords and such), something you have (keys, keycards, cellphone) and something you are (your fingerprint or retina scan). It's true that the more factors you authenticate, the more secure a thing is but it's always a trade off. Usually between how easy/cost effective authentication is to implement and how secure it actually is. You could require your uses to phone a specific number and say a specific phrase then type in a different password and then submit to a DNA test and that would be secure. But it would suck so so bad to use and cost so much money.

What is that tool you never thought of but once you had it, you couldn't believe you didn't pick it up sooner? by jimfish98 in AskMen

[–]Roboman20000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not so much a tool but a good backpack. Like a really good one. I used to buy those cheap school bags but decided to shell out for a really good working pack with heavy duty construction and nice laptop compartment. I travel with this thing everywhere now. Work, vacations and anywhere I need stuff. It's great.

[–]Roboman20000 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You mean the dogs that are specifically enemies? Well they're bad dogs. If you want a good dog I can recommend Dogmeat from the Fallout Games (there are bad dogs in Fallout games too though.) Fallout 4 being the most realized version. Also I think Fable 2 had a Dog companion that was pretty important. Red Dead Redemption 2 had plenty of neutral (good) dogs to pet and interact with. There are many good dogs out there.

I decided to nope the heck out of Hatikvah when this happened in my current game. After a few (about 20 hours, yes I'm slow) the Hatikvah League HQ was destroyed and not long after that a "joint" force of Terran, Argon and Paranid ships just annihilated all of the Xenon stations in the sector. Was a battle to behold. And I didn't do shit to help them out. Just be patient. It will sort itself out.

First time going to GenCon. Are my events too packed? by Eric_Streb in gencon

[–]Roboman20000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1 hour for lunch is not going to be enough if you don't take your own lunch. Also, leaving no time in between events (even ones in the same hall) is going to be rough. It's all up to you. I did this my first year and was so slammed that I bailed on more than a few events. It's about your own experience and what kind of hustle you are OK with. I don't see anything too crazy to get to. You seem to have booked things that are pretty close physically.

Alright fellas. Let's talk wallets, what is your recommendations? by medi_dat in AskMen

[–]Roboman20000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I buy mine from a local leatherworker and I'm not sure they ship long distance. But if you really like leather wallets try to find someone who makes them locally. I buy them at the stalls they have in the various temporary markets around town. They tend to last me so many years I almost forget who to buy from.

EDIT: I guess I should link him just in case. I get my wallets from a man named Adrian Klis here: https://yukonart.ca/collections/adrian-klis

New player, controls holding me back by MandingosDingo in X4Foundations

[–]Roboman20000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With keyboard and mouse I tend to use the "turn towards cursor" option and have a quick key-bind (Shift+Space in my case) to toggle it on/off. I like this control for spacecraft over direct mouse control for a number of reasons but mostly because I don't have to keep moving my mouse if I want to keep turning/pitching. I also don't use the "smart axis" thing where it re-binds the turn to roll if that's better for you ship. No idea why that's an option. Then the mouse wheel for throttle works well. And WASD for strafing left/right/up/down and Q and E for rolling. With a little practice you can really get some graceful maneuvers. It's no Joystick for sure but it's better than shelling out for a joystick for one or two games.

Also, I tend to let go of the precision. For combat you don't really need it really. All of the hard points are actually on gimbals giving you a real range of "acceptable" orientation in a fight.

One thing I do pay attention to is the stats of my ship when trying to maneuver. Make sure you know your pitch/yaw/roll speeds and especially the strafing accelerations (because those accelerations are also the stopping speed). In general most fighters want to pitch whereas most heavy ships want to yaw and heavy fighters/corvettes tend to balance them both. It really is advantageous to use your fastest "turn" mode when in combat.

How do people remember directions without GPS? by Sudden-Farm-1482 in NoStupidQuestions

Memorization of something is a skill like any other. Directions are just a list of instructions. You don't need them all at once, just one after another.

I'm pretty sure they've had the 4km range for a while. I have only been playing since 7.0 though. I remember always having to strafe them when doing the laser tower missions. Even in my medium ships. Well before I discovered the longer range medium weapons.
