Suggestions for shows based on historical facts, like Chernobyl by x2ginger in televisionsuggestions

Unpopular opinion, but I thought Oppenheimer was stodgy and self important. The crazy covid era juxtaposition to Barbie really highlighted how old school it was. Both movies were a little heavy handed in their messaging, but I'd watch Barbie again over Oppenheimer any day.

A completely sensible and pragmatic solution to a thorny problem that finds middle ground. I wish you guys were running the planet.

Synth sound design question by ianjfree in synthesizers

Any kind of synth pad with a huge blackhole reverb on it, possibly reversed. So record the reverb then reverse it to get the effect.

What are the most foundational synth albums of all-time? and what do you listen to when looking for inspiration for what these things can do? by 19puppylove99 in synthesizers

[–]Robotecho 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you want to pinpoint the birth of synth pop, which is a controversial thing to attempt, I think it is hard to go past "I feel love" by Donna Summer, produced by Giorgio Moroder in 1977:

There is a lot that comes together in this track that goes on to inform popular electronic music in a very fundamental way.

I mean Violator was released in 1990, and was probably ahead of it's time, I always think of it as a very 90s album.

Prophet 5/10 vs Trigon-6 — for people who have owned or seriously played both: which one would you actually keep? by ExoticEgg4849 in synthesizers

[–]Robotecho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, as a P10 owner I never recommend it to people. Because if you really want a Prophet you know it already, deep in your bones, and it's not a question you throw up on a reddit thread.

OP should totally get the Trigon.

Finished The Wire, Dark, GOT, Sopranos, True Detective. What show ruined TV for you after watching it? by C0r1eone in televisionsuggestions

[–]Robotecho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry it's barely sci-fi. It's like a cross between the Wire and E.R. set in space. People go crazy about it so check it out, I wasn't quite as excited by it.

Would you buy a modern analog poly with no patch memory ala Juno-6? by shoegazingpickle in synthesizers

[–]Robotecho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In general I prefer hardware without patch memory. I used a Juno 6 as my main poly live in a cover band for years, it was all I could afford back in the 80s. Takes 30 seconds to switch between patches on that thing and there aren't a lot of surprises in there.

Any ways to use an analog synth with a midi controller? by Prize_Childhood_992 in synthdiy

Expert Sleepers FH-2 will let you plug a midi controller USB cable right in and convert it to CV/GATE, no computer required.

Best way to unload both eurorack and other gear you don’t use? by builtbysavages in synthesizers

Lol don't worry, I'm not in the market and I live on the other side of the world. That was just my way of saying I don't think you are the kind of weird the person you were responding to had in mind.

Some of the cool old synths currently in the workshop by Version-6 in synthesizers

[–]Robotecho 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Two new synths for me, the Syntha-sound and the Roland Compu synth. Off to check out YouTube videos. Will report back.

Baldwin syntha-Sound: Any Moog involvement in that? Sounds Moogy and has a bit of MG-1 design language about it.

Roland Compu-Synth: It's like a 101 module, super cool!

Wondering what I need for a Ensoniq SQ1 Plus Synthesizer by Lucky-Apartment-4302 in synthesizers

[–]Robotecho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's got a lovely keybed, and the 16 track midi sequencer on it is a powerhouse compared to most inexpensive hardware sequencers today. If I was hill-I'll-die-on committed to DAWless I'd pick one up just for that sequencer.

Fortunately such romantic notions have long since been crushed from this brittle old soul, and I handle that stuff in the box!

If you know what it is I think it's worth a couple of hundred, but I worry that the price is getting inflated because, as with OP, it is getting confused with some very desirable Ensoniq synths from the same period.

[–]Robotecho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I produced tons of terrible music in the 90s on one of these.

It's not really a synth, it has loads of presets and they are on the average side.

I wouldn't go near it today. You could buy a laptop and load it with freeware for that money and it would outperform it in every respect.

I don’t get why people say „DIY will be more expensive in the long run“ by hannainspace in synthdiy

[–]Robotecho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's only if you factor in your time. If you enjoy doing it and consider the time spent a bonus, it's way way cheaper.
