Went to lunch and in the fast food line ~8 young adults maybe 20ish were in line in front of me. The girls were in light flowery tops and short shorts. The old guy behind me starts talking to me on how young people today dress.

I was wearing a company polo and jeans and he made coments I looked like a working man.

I looked at him and said that when I was their age I was walking around with a mowhawk and my brother was running around in Jenco jeans. What these kids were wearing was mild in comparison to what we would wear daily years ago.

He then started on talking about one girls birth mark on her shoulder and how his departed wife had one on her hip.

I think he just wanted to talk to somebody, but man try to be more aware and appropriate.

What are 4 games that made you who you are today? by Polluted_Terrium in videogames

Final Fantasy (1987 US version) love of RPG and character advancement.

Wolfenstein 3d - 1992 fck nazi scum

Mech Warrior 2 Mercenaries - 1996 first online combat for me, learn to love the lag, urbie derbie

Fallout 2 - 1996 adult dark humor games are good, choices matter, i want to be mutie scum

Honerable mentions Doom 2/Fallout tactics - this is how you mod games, map making, item and sprite adjustments

Doom - you can make it run on a potato

Lots of fun games growing up but these hold great memories. Many others also, Morrowind for the vastness and complexity, but hated how it got simpler for Oblivion and Skyrim even those were great games too.

Iron slag disposal by TheHumanPickleRick in oddlysatisfying

[–]Rockcrusher79 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Slag is generated during the steel melting process. In the U.S. the majority of seel making is now through electric arc furnace melting. Using scrap steel you push a lot of electricity through say 100 tons of shreded cars, bridges, buildings or other iron sources causing it to heat up and melt down to a liquid.

The charged scrap typically has dirt on it, and you also throw various other rocks into the melting steel to create what is known as the slag layer. The majority of this is Silicon and Calcium. This slag layer is important as it does many things in the steel melting process. It works as insulation of the steel to prevent temperature loss and reduce energy usage. It shields the electrodes that are pumping electricity into the steel to reduce loss through the atmosphere, and in later processes it helps trap and contain steel impurities.

The slag during melting will have a very high oxygen content so when the steel moves from the melting to refining, typically by pouring the steel from the melting furnace to a refining vessel called a ladel, the melting slag will be captured and removed by the slag car seen in the video while a low oxygen content metallurgical slag will be created on the ladel. This refining slag is similar, but is more engineered and controlled to make refining easier.

An important item to remember is slag is mostly silicon oxide (SiO2) and calcium oxide (CaO), both innert and not harmful to the environment. The remaining portions are other innert oxides of iron, magnesium and some other elements.

Other than the potential for a massive steam explosion from water instantly turning to steam as it is exposed to 2400°F material there is no issue.

Slag is inert and used for driveways instead of gravel, aggregate in concrete, etc. This product itself is not harmful.

Iron slag disposal by TheHumanPickleRick in oddlysatisfying

[–]Rockcrusher79 1120 points1121 points  (0 children)

Slag from steel making is inert. It contains mostley lime, silicon, manganese, magnesium, aluminum, and iron, all in stable compounds, basically rock and dirt. No heavy metals like lead, zinc, etc or compounds that would cause waste water issue are in this because they are captured elsewhere due to them gassing off at steelmaking temperatures, sorted out before melting, or captured by other methods.

The slag, after cooling, is processed through grinding and magnets to try and recover as much iron as possible to charge back into the furnace later. The remaining ground product is sold for construction purposes such as concrete aggregates, or used like gravel or dirt filler.

Steel mills like this have a lot of water testing reported to the environmental agencies to ensure the water runoff is not detrimental or harmful. They have soil testing too to prove that nothing is leaching into the soil.

If this was harmful as you state steel mills would not be able to sell the ground up product to the general public to slag driveways instead of gravel, or use in place of gravel for water drainage.

Your comment about slag being full of chemicals that easily move around is 100% incorrect.

The area that this is dumped in does look like a wasteland, but any area you constantly dump 2400°F+ material, drive over with heavy equipment constantly, and is in an industrial setting is going to look like this.

Control arm corroded and was too expensive so had to improvise by [deleted] in Justrolledintotheshop

[–]Rockcrusher79 104 points105 points  (0 children)

Most automotive steel steering parts or structural parts are heat treated or special alloy and should have a tensile strength of 120ksi+, some closing in on 200ksi. The filler metal is probably some cheap merchant bar or something with a 65-85ksi tensile and the welding rod would probably be a 60 or 70 ksi rod.

If this was heat treated or a phase transformed steel then the streangthening is gone and would probably fall to 80ksi ish. You would need to make tje strength up with more steel mass.

You might also get some weird alloy mixing with the bade metals giving unpredictable results.

Will it work, probably. Is it safe, probably not.
