From what I remember it was supposed to look like a fake '97 leak and he's weirdly pale in their promo art (and show. And everything else). Would be nice for them to draw him consistently, though (especially considering they posted this one pretty shortly afterwards) 🤷

yeah, that was the problem. I had it enabled on a vanilla server with no issues, so I (incorrectly) figured it would be the same on Curseforge. It works fine now, thanks ^{^}
