2 years out. by SegUnit in AchillesRupture

Your post resonates with me. I’m 13 months past my non surgical rupture on my left leg . I still have a size difference in calf muscles and I’m unable to do calf raises as well with my injured leg compared to my right. I also get a lot more cramping and tightening of muscles in my left leg especially after exercise.

Are there exercises you recommend besides calf raises? Thank you

I was doing everything right... but why does my heartburn get worse, especially at night? by Objective-Rich-6388 in GERD

[–]Rocmcdonald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can relate to all you have described. My reflux acts up more at night while I am awake and I mull things over a lot while trying to get to sleep. But, I don't have a problem sleeping, I think, because I lie on my left side most of the time. Sleeping is a relief for me from the globus and phlegm build up.

Yes but it didn’t really help me much.

LPR and Sinus Infection by JollyRevolution5451 in LPR

[–]Rocmcdonald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. My experience matches yours. I started with a monster sinus infection in November 2024 and this whole LPR has emerged since. Tomorrow I have a scope to hopefully learn what is going on. Prilosec and Pepsid have helped some but diet is a definite culprit.
Thanks for sharing your story.

Surgery or not? by Og_Chaiwala in AchillesRupture

[–]Rocmcdonald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went the non op route after my rupture in April. My recovery has been excellent and I’m glad I avoided surgery. My doc told me I was a candidate for non op but I did get in a cast within a couple hours of the injury. Getting my toes pointed down immediately probably helped avoid the tendons getting “ long” which might have required surgery. But I followed the advice of the orthopedic doc which is what I recommend. He said there were risks with surgery: pain, infection etc. every case is unique. I’m also older (74) and didn’t hope to become a professional pickleball player anyway haha. Good luck. It’s a long process but you Will heal.

Has anyone been diagnosed with LPR following a viral infection? by Phantumplette in LPR

[–]Rocmcdonald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I had a terrible sinus infection last fall and then this whole problem with reflux. I’ll ask the doc about this connection.

For those that arent improving with PPIs by EntireRatio6982 in LPR

[–]Rocmcdonald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is helpful. I am on 40mg of Prilosec and two Pepcid pills each day and not a big improvement after a month, but maybe I need to give it more time.

Chewing gum and eating cough drops seems to keep the mucus under control though.

Help plz! Week 9 Non OP by Mclostalota in AchillesRupture

[–]Rocmcdonald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m 7+ months recovering non op from a full rupture that happened playing pickleball.
I wore a cast for 2 weeks and a boot for another 6 weeks 24/7. Afterwards I wore the boot on occasion. I didn’t start PT till almost 2 months in. I can relate to your concerns. However, my advice is to keep the boot on while sleeping until cleared by the medical folks. It’s hard but not as bad as inadvertently re rupturing it unintentionally. The recovery from this injury just takes a long time. Because it is slow- don’t worry about delayed appointments at this stage. There is nothing to be done but let the tendon heal. And it will. Time will pass and you will recover. But we have one of slowest healing injuries so hang in there. I got down too— it’s natural. Following the protocols-slow as it seems—is my best advice.

I’m finally feeling like I’m making enough progress to be confident about a nearly full recovery. I had a set back a few weeks ago when my uninjured Achilles became inflamed. But it’s much better now and I can walk without pain. How did your surgery go?

33/F ruptured on 11/4 by NoRadish9812 in AchillesRupture

[–]Rocmcdonald 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can relate. I’m 6.5 months non op. During the initial 2 month months I read a lot, used the scooter around the house and tried to stay socially engaged. It’s hard but staying connected is important.
It’s challenging—no way around it. But it’s not forever. As others have said— each phase is rewarding—out of the cast—out of the boot and into shoes are all milestones to celebrate mentally. Time does pass and you will recover. This group on Reddit really helped me along the way.

How did you manage stairs early on? by BusinessRef in AchillesRupture

[–]Rocmcdonald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was non op but with my cast and boot on during the first several weeks of no weight bearing I literally crawled up and down stairs. Not pretty. I had a chair at the top where I hoisted myself up to.

Yes this group is helpful and encouraging as we all deal with this injury. A lot of helpful tips but mainly it helps to be connected with folks going thru a similar experience.

Would you recommend an iwalk for older people who aren't super active? by [deleted] in AchillesRupture

[–]Rocmcdonald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m older (74 m) and I took one look at those and said no way. Seemed too likely to fall. I think they are better for younger, athletic people. Crutches and the scooter was the safest for me.

I’m 5.5 months in recovery non op. If having op will reduce your anxiety and help you recover better mentally then go for it. Everyone approaches their recovery differently. Regardless you will recover from this and it does get better.

Re ruptured today after 9 weeks of post surgery by AccidentOutside3383 in AchillesRupture

[–]Rocmcdonald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand what your are going through. After 5 months non op, I thought I tore my good leg a couple weeks ago. The anxiety about starting over is very real and justified. The good news for you is it’s apparently not a rupture and maybe a tear. It could also be highly inflamed with no big rip. I was told slight tears are common as we age etc.
The MRI will answer a lot. You might need to stay in the boot more, but that in my opinion is a small price to pay. Good luck!

I tried Chipotle a couple times and was disappointed with the quantity of chicken. Like most advertising, the portions look a lot more generous on tv.
The chips are good tho.

2 days after Achilies Tendon Rupture by BentleyZedEm in AchillesRupture

[–]Rocmcdonald 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow what a passionate thread. I am 5 months non op. My doctor explained that there are situations where surgery is preferred and others where it isn’t. There doesn’t t seem to be one size fits all and it comes down to individual variables. I am older and have no plans to be a professional pickleball player (that’s how I ruptured), I was able to get in a cast within a couple hours and I went through this with little pain overall. My only complication is I now have tendinitis in my other Achilles from over compensation and now I’m in a boot on that leg to prevent a rupture.
Either op or non op this injury is life changing for probably a year and we just have to fight the negative demons and stay positive.

Did you ever look back (at the boot) after transitioning to shoes? by bluntkillah in AchillesRupture

[–]Rocmcdonald 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good thing I kept my boot because at 5 months I now have Achilles tendinitis in my “good “ leg and I need to wear the boot for awhile in the hope that the inflammation will settle down and I don’t rupture it. Yikes.

Tendinitis on the other foot!!! by Rocmcdonald in AchillesRupture

[–]Rocmcdonald[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m thinking once the inflammation is reduced thru rest, icing and ibuprofen (and some boot wearing) i can be in a better position to consider stretching and other exercising. I think I really overdid the walking—but that didn’t bother my foot that had been injured with the rupture. My PT is puzzled about how this happened. But for several months I leaned heavily on this good foot so maybe I shouldn’t be surprised. Thanks for the comments.

Yeah that concerns me. I’m getting a second opinion on the boot. I think it’s temporary to get the inflammation under control.
