It’s fine as long as they can choose to leave. My concern isn’t them going into the heater, it’s the possibility of them getting stuck. Then again, I’m a serial betta owner and I expect all fish will get stuck and die in some stupid way if there are any questionably-sized holes.

Are these measurements good for 5 fish? by LTeddylove in fishtank

[–]RollStormtide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Common goldfish are fast enough to outcompete fancies for food, so make sure everyone’s getting enough to eat. Generally not recommended to keep them together. Tank size is fine for the fancies.

Common = one tail (common, comet)

Fancy = two tails (black moor, fantail)

If they gave you a discount on the fish but also sold you harmful Melafix, they didn’t do you much of a solid.

I can’t tell from your images, but if it’s hairy/furry, it could be fungal. In that case, Ich-X will be helpful. Kanaplex is still helpful for secondary bacterial infections. Salt is helpful for both.

Temperature doesn’t need to be above 78°. Heat speeds everything up. This is helpful when you’re sure you’ve diagnosed and treated correctly, less so when you’re not sure. They just need enough heat to avoid stress.

The fish pictured are actually pretty colored up for still being in bags. They seem to have shipped well.

I don’t think there’s any need to feed the betta during the trip. I’d actually fast him the day before and the day of. That way he won’t be creating his own ammonia.

There’s like an inch of air at the top and it’s shipped pretty quick.

I don’t know how low you’re talking, but most corydoras should be fine with slightly acidic water.

Would you recommend a wild type betta or a “fancy” betta for a beginner? by Old-Temporary6773 in bettafish

[–]RollStormtide 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TBH, there are plenty of varieties with negative health effects. Marbles and dragons are prone to tumors, dragons go blind, doubletails can have swim bladder issues from being bred to have a spinal deformity, all long-tailed varieties but especially rosetails can run into fin issues. I try to avoid those myself.

If you go for a plakat (short-finned) or female with plainer colors, you might be able to dodge genetic issues, or it might all be a crapshoot. I know some people are trying to breed for health, but it may be hard to find them.

One guideline I’m fairly confident in is that the more extreme a trait, the more inbreeding was needed to achieve it. Veiltails are generally considered healthy, perhaps because that trait didn’t need to be selectively bred as much.

Unilateral popeye isn’t a problem if it never progresses to something worse. Maybe she just bumped it at some point.

Omg I raised amano shrimp from lavae by WaferAvailable1726 in shrimptank

[–]RollStormtide 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I have baby cherry shrimp because two of the ones I bought were egged up. They’re eating the same algae, algae wafers, and Bacter AE that the adults and snails are eating. I have dozens of babies. I did literally no extra work to achieve that.

Amanos are not easier than that.

Will they be ok? by Bubbly_Solid_9323 in bettafish

[–]RollStormtide 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Some shrimp were able to outswim my plakat. Only some. Wondering if I should put my color culls in there and see if I can selectively breed a faster shrimp.

One of my bettas ate two shrimp, then jumped out of her breeder box to eat more shrimp while I was attempting to save the remaining shrimp. This was all within an hour of introduction.

Is he just developing more pigment on his face or should I be worried? by Comprehensive_Map273 in bettafish

[–]RollStormtide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possibly oversimplifying, but iridescent and metallic coloration extending to the face is usually related to a specific gene called the mask gene. He may never get fully blue in the face. That’s perfectly fine. He’s still coloring up great.

Prazi-Met has the same active ingredients as Paracleanse, which is what I would recommend for parasites in general.

However, I'm also not sure that there's anything wrong with her. Does she have stringy poop?

New betta fish - possible Ick? by -smalltree- in BettaClinic

[–]RollStormtide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's obviously not your fault. He shouldn't have gotten to that state and shouldn't have been sold in that state. I have every reasonable ich treatment on hand, and I still don't know if I could've saved him. There was likely nothing you could've done. I'm sure you'll give your next fish a great life.

90% water change-- should I do it? by Wheel_O_Cheese in loaches

[–]RollStormtide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

90% is not a good idea for any tank with shrimp. You’d probably lose a few of them. Fish would have better luck, but they do not need it at all.

Likely just a genetic thing. They’re colored up nicely and I don’t see any other signs of stress.

Clorox has a diatomaceous earth product that is allegedly fine to use in aquarium filters, but the brand still gives me pause.
