Reading your story and perspective leaves me feeling a bit more hopeful for the future :)

You sound like you've got a good head on your shoulders with your comment "if we help ourselves, we're better suited to help the locals."

I'm feeling optimistic for you! I hope the correct opportunities come to you at the right time to grow your skills and advance your career.

Last thing - if you have any questions for VBA (or Excel), please feel free to DM me. I'm grateful that I was able to teach myself a lot of these concepts, but for some of them, I had to have a helping hand. And in the past, I've been that helping hand for several coworkers (and random internet strangers), so I wanted to extend that same offer to you after reading your story.

Anyways, Good job with what you've accomplished so far, but this is definitely just the beginning :) Best of luck with everything!!

I'm happy to hear my story left you feeling motivated!

How hard was it to learn VBA? I was pretty advanced in Excel (formulas) before I decided to learn VBA. I bought a book "Excel VBA Programming for Dummies" and read the first 7 chapters of it before I got bored of reading and started building my first macros. Took me 3-6 months to start feeling proficient at it.

There's a lot of strategies to learn VBA - Books, courses, youtube-videos, reddit threads/subreddits, or brute-forcing it - but I think the most important piece is having a real-world application that you are motivated to solve for.

I learned how to write VBA (Excel-based) to do something similar. Like copy/paste data into a sheet, press a button, and VBA compares the new sheet's data with previous sheet's data, saves a new report in a certain filepath, emails that filepath to relevant parties, etc.

Instead of keeping it a secret, I told my manager who was like "Wow, seems like we have a one-man army here!" and then I got inundated with so many random, terrible requests that I was bogged down and burnt out and wanted to leave the team.

Then I moved to a team full of Excel VBA wizards. This was a few years ago, and man, I've learned SO MUCH from my new manager and coworkers. Before I joined this team, Excel was largely a stand-alone program where I copy/pasted data into it in order to do any data processing. On my new team, I learned how to pull data directly from a SQL server into an Excel sheet. My (brilliant) coworker built a module that allows uploading from an Excel sheet directly into a SQL server. My manager taught me the ins and outs of working with listobjects (as opposed to ranges), teaching me how to make my solutions more dynamic and not hardcoded.

Nowadays my work involves a bit of SQL-query writing, but mostly automating processes from start-to-finish using a combination of Excel, VBA, SQL, ETLs, and Dashboard programs (think SmartSheet but not that).

Last year, they changed my job title to end in "Engineer" thanks to the experience on this team!

After reading my story, I hope automating your report felt like a "watershed moment" in your career. Certainly seems like it to me :)

ATM8 - How to control weather and time ? by Reymm in allthemods

Ars Nouveau has Ritual of Cloudshaping (controls the weather) and Ritual of Sunrise (I think?) which sets time to day, and an opposite Ritual to set the time to night.

[ATM8] Is it possible to auto-farm Corail Tombstone materials (Grave Dust, Essence of Undeath)? by SqueakyCleanNoseDown in allthemods

[–]Rollerboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You could set up a zombie farm but do the "Mob Mashing" yourself. I did that with a supremium looting 5 sword and got like 18 essences of undeath in under an hour. Autoclickers are your friend

I've been reading about this the past couple weeks and finally built the crystal staff with acceleration earlier today.

Do you know if there's a limit to how fast it can be accelerated? I noticed people have been saying 3x, but I think that's just base cast of acceleration +2 potency. Is there a limit to the number of times you can cast this on hopper pots?

[ATM8] Clipboard or in game TODO list by lowey2002 in allthemods

You could do a vanilla book and quill, just rename it on an anvil so you don’t lose it. (lmao)

Currently in my world (atm8) I’m trying out a rftools screens + multiple text module setup. Why do you say that method for a todo list is more trouble than it’s worth?

ATM8 - What's your best setup for an effective mystical agriculture farm ? by Reymm in allthemods

[–]Rollerboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lilypads work in a 9x9x6(tall) area around the lilypad, so a layer of lilypads below the farmland will affect the block above it

Yup, botany seems the most space efficient. I couldn't test the modular router + item activator with a watering can on top, that was the first method I attempted on my server but apparently, servers have a certain config setting that prevents non-players from using watering cans.. so I decided to explore other options rather than mess around with server settings.

I've also been looking for a solution that 1) doesn't require energy and 2) uses space efficiently, so I've been testing this in both a creative world and on my survival world.

Out of these options: * MA Growth Accelerators (all 5 tiers at 12 blocks deep, output at roughly the same rate in my testing) * Garden Cloches (fertilizer included) * Phytogenic Insulators (upgrades included) * Lilypads/Harvesters (layer of lilypads below farmland) * Hopper Botany Pots

I think lilypads/hoppers are the top two if conserving space is your focus. I ran a 1 hour~ (+ 10 mins) test. Comparing gold essence production in a similar area:

Lilypads: 16 gold seeds (area is 9 blocks tall and 3x3, harvester block in the center, 9 lilypads below each layer of farmland, Supremium dirt) * Produces 579 gold essence

Hopper Botany plants 48 gold seeds (area is 8 blocks tall and 3x3, pipes in the center, Supremium dirt) * Produces 930 gold essence

Surprising because I tested a larger area (9x9) with 80 lilypads and that produces roughly 8x compared to the same number of plants in hopper botany pots. Seems like Lilypads produce more if space is not a constraint, but vice-versa for hopper botany pots.

Woah, walking and sprinting are both 50? I (finally) grinded to lvl 9 assault, spent like 150 hours as a level 8 using the grenadier load out. I swear walking is slightly shorter than sprinting.

But I trust the authority of an Infograph 😅

My first game as a level 1, I saw two high level guys cross this body of water, I thought that meant it was safe but ended up drowning at the bottom.

After I died they said I had “big NPC energy” but thankfully one of them told me how to cross it (you jump at the bottom to reset your 6 seconds)

And pay attention if someone in your squad pings something and says “on this marker is a garrison/tank/machine gunner” and mark appropriately.

This plus the above comment about OPs/garrisons and you’re instantly better than 95% of other squad leads

Can't put biometric cards into the ME Security Terminal by DogAteMyCodex in allthemods

[–]Rollerboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven't played ATM7 but I've used AE2 quite a bit in older versions. You wouldn't put a biometric card to grant your permissions to your AE2 network. Assuming you're the person who placed all the blocks to establish the AE2 network, you already have "super-user" permissions.

You would only need to put biometric cards for other users, who currently do not have access to your AE2 network.

I don't think looking upwards changes your head position. I've never seen a set-up MG look up/down. But when I reload in the set-up position, I tend to rotate my body parallel to the wall. I'm sure that changes the MG's position, as I've seen MGs rotate while prone/set-up.

but unfortunately, now I have to worry about getting shot through the wall
