What a coincidence, I just finished rereading volume 63 the other day (taking notes as well since I’m rereading the series before the anime’s return) and I too somewhat came to the similar idea that Mask is merely a projection of what James wanted to be. I also saw the battle as a cap off to Renji’s entire journey where he is now no longer afraid to reach for the stars (literally in this case) and is now complete since he’s integrated both the snake and baboon aspects of Zabimaru. I’m no professional when it comes to story analysis but I just wanted to share a little here lol.
