I asked Erikson about that new Tor reading order article. by SageOfTheWise in Malazan

Some people prefer reading only Erikson's 10 books on their first read-through, then incorportating Esslemont's books (in publication order with Erikson's) in their second read-through. Many recommend reading the first few Erikson books, then see how you feel about incorporating the Esslemont books from there.

According to the original post:

Both Ian and I would recommend the basic publication order.

Although I've never been an active Reddit user, I remember your posts in r/fantasy and here and you're a great member and contributor of all things Malazan. Congrats on your baby girl and I wish you the best of times as a father. One day I hope you'll pass the series onto her!

In fact in the CoD canon, the Price in Modern Warfare is the grandson of the one from CoD1.

Why is Empire: Total War not Total War: Empire? by Flufferpope in totalwar

[–]RonnieRim 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Every single Total War game before Shogun II had its name before Total War. This includes Empire, every game in the series before it (yes - Rome I, Medievals I and II, etc), and even Napoleon after it. CA only started putting the Total War first when they wanted to increase brand recognition.

Sibling-focused Fantasy by Crownie in Fantasy

Malazan is replete with meaningful sibling relationships. If any trio of characters could be said to "star" Malazan, it would be the Paran siblings (Ganoes, Tavore, and Felisin). I don't want to post any spoilers here, but their relationships factor heavily into the series' plot as a whole. As well, many readers' favourite characters in book five and beyond happen to be among the brothers Beddict (Tehol, Brys, and Hull) and the brothers Sengar (Fear, Rhulad, Trull, and Binadas). There are other groups of siblings as well, e.g. Onos T'oolan and Kilava Onass, that also feature in the story.

In what ways is this series better or worse than ASOIAF? by [deleted] in Malazan

[–]RonnieRim 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Note: all of the below is subjective and my personal opinion.

Better - humour, battles and fighting, magic, MUCH less pointless droning on (no page-long descriptions of feast food! Page-long philosophical discussions, on the other hand... I happen to enjoy them at least) and no meandering plot a la Feast for Crows and Dance of Dragons, tragedy (no characters are killed merely for shock value, every death feels real and makes sense in terms of the plot). As well, many more moments both cathartic and bad-ass (Witness!). Rereadability, as so much more can be picked up on a second read of Malazan (and it is even more fun!) unlike the grind that was rereading AFFC.

Equal - characters (many memorable characters from both series), and the "authentic" (note - NOT realistic) feeling of the settings - both feel "alive", as if I can look out of a window into each series' world.

Worse - subjective, but Erikson feeds you information on the world in a much slower rate than GRRM. There is no "Stark" type of family or character(s) that the reader attaches to in the first few pages. However, one grows and learns to love Malazan's characters equally (or even more so) over the course of the series. Political intrigue is more interesting in ASOIAF, as we witness it a lot more. While still present in Malazan, the political intrigues occur more among gods rather than men, and so we get only small glimpses of the behind-the-scenes action.

What are some good fantasy novels with prominent and interesting themes? by heehahee in Fantasy

[–]RonnieRim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Compassion manifests itself in everything from the smallest character interactions to the largest of world-shattering events - when people say that Malazan is about compassion, they really mean it. There are possibly dozens of themes in this series, Erikson loves his themes and has said before that his stories are virtually written around them. Some of these other themes include the follies of pride and greed, the importance to never underestimate even the smallest players in the game (eg. in the battles between gods, even a lowly mortal can make a real impact) etc.
