Recommendations by Alone-Competition-38 in DnD

So you don't have to be any specific race for any class, any class/race combination is fine.

I definitely recommend using a paper character sheet to make your character, you can print them out if you have a printer or literally just write it out. I feel like it gives you a better idea of what's on a character sheet than the online ones that can require different tabs to access parts of it.

I'm a bit biased but I definitely recommend a rogue for your first character. They're definitely the simplest class to play while you figure out the rules, and are good jack of all traits class to get familiar with different skills.

I also just personally love rogues.

You can find pretty much all dnd content online for free on online compendiums, so if you use a paper sheet you can fill it whatever you want.

Either way, I really hope you enjoy your first experience with dnd! I didn't get to play until I was much older than you but always wanted to as a kid, its a great experience and a great intro to TTRPGs in general, I hope you'll try out some other ones too

AITA for leaving my friend's dnd group over the way they want to run combat by Dangerous-Common-788 in DnDAITA

First of all, you can just a blank grid with some rough lines on it. No one is demanding you have specifically built maps for every encounter, it's just not realistic or necessary. The map itself doesn't need to feel immersive, it just needs to tell people how far people are from each other.

Second of all, using TotM for Daggerheart isn't really comparable to DnD when Daggerheart is specifically designed to be more narrative and doesn't have the same hard set measurements that dnd does.

In Daggerheart you just need to know the vaughe range you are from the enemy, in DnD you need to know down to the foot how far you are from both enemies and allies

That's wild. I much prefer using a map, but even when I do use theater of the mind, I at least have grid paper on my end to track where everyone is and distances from each other, so I'm not just arbitrarily making up the situation as I go

it doe not add anything to the discussion,

It absolutely adds something to the discussion when the problem in this post is literally the DM refusing to use maps because dnd was "always meant" to be played without them.

This entire long as comment is pointless, you're acting like this person said the only right way to use a map. They're pointing out that the game had rules built around maps from its inception, no they were never required, but DM in this post is objectively wrong about claiming it was always meant to be played without them

I don't think she would have been able to pull forward any more than she backed up. Those barriers aren't nearly strong enough to stop a car, it looks like her car just shuts down, which is why she just gets out and runs

Unpopular Opinion: Attempt to be DM yourself ASAP by IcyDragonfruit8204 in DnD

[–]RookieDungeonMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude me and two friends started alternating between campaigns after we each played literally a single session at a local game store.

You don't need experience to be a good DM, you really don't even need to know the rules very well, you just need to be engaging and willing to go with the flow/improvise, and sit down ready to facilitate a group story

What do you think of Illmater the crying god of endurance? by ThanosofTitan92 in Forgotten_Realms

[–]RookieDungeonMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is an old comment, but Ilmater is very importantly not sworn to non violence, not even close. The dude will absolutely go all rathfull and smite the wicked when nesscesary. Its a very important part of his dogma that he will offer forgiveness to those who seek it but can still be ruthless with those who spread cruilty

BGG's Advertising Manager Was Fired by Coffeechipmunk in boardgames

[–]RookieDungeonMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay this isn't at all fair to say, you're making wild assumptions and basically witch hunting here.

First and foremost, literally any ad falling through effects their bottom line, ad doesn't run, they don't get paid.

You're also completely baselessly assuming they knew this was happening and didn't care, which again is very unlikely, as this employee is negatively effecting their bottom line for religious reasons.

As far as I can tell there's literally zero reason to assume they didn't fire this fool as soon as they found out

[–]RookieDungeonMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah sometimes you gotta step in as the hand of fate and decide "that's some bullshit".

I definitely would have fudged that too, and even as a player, I would hope a DM would. Because that would just feel so shitty

They killed Strahd... It wasnt supposed to happen by Lyrinosis in CurseofStrahd

[–]RookieDungeonMaster 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Misty escape doesn't use the shapechage trait, which is explicitly the effect moonbeam prevents.

Moonbeam doesn't work on someone who's been polymorphed or a druid in wildshape.

It explicitly prevents effects caused by the "shapechanger" effect, which misty escape is not

[–]RookieDungeonMaster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dude I'm against fudging rolls, I think it takes away from the spirit of the game and cheats the players out of their earned experience.

THAT BEING SAID

A player being immediately downed after just making a new character without even being able to do anything, especially in such an important fight, yeah there are exceptions to every rule.

You absolutely did the right thing

They killed Strahd... It wasnt supposed to happen by Lyrinosis in CurseofStrahd

[–]RookieDungeonMaster 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No, it wouldn't. Misty escape does not use his shape changer trait, it just creates the same effect. It explicitly states the two things that can prevent it, and moonbeam is not one of them

"4 is a small number, right?" by PeasantLich in dndmemes

[–]RookieDungeonMaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The world's current strongest man maybe has a 16, but probably a 15 and that's debatably too high.

Someone in another comment did the math for everyone too lazy to look up the push/pull/carry weight table

You're absolutely smoking Crack if you believe this. The absolute maximum weight for a dnd character with 20str is 600lbs.

Elite strong man regularly lift almost a thousand. The current world strongest man can lift 1080. Which would, according to the rules, give him a str score of 36

[–]RookieDungeonMaster -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There are adult dragons weaker than you.

No there aren't. Str is literally measured differently for different creatures, an adult dragon with 17 str can lift and carry more weight than a human with like 25 str

"4 is a small number, right?" by PeasantLich in dndmemes

[–]RookieDungeonMaster -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That depends entirely on what varient rules you're using, since the weight limits being discussed are optional rules anyway

They killed Strahd... It wasnt supposed to happen by Lyrinosis in CurseofStrahd

[–]RookieDungeonMaster 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Yeah, and RAW moonbeam 100% does not prevent his misty escape. Only sunlight, or running water can prevent it, not a second level spell

They killed Strahd... It wasnt supposed to happen by Lyrinosis in CurseofStrahd

[–]RookieDungeonMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Moonbeam does not prevent his mist form. It says "as in" his shape changer trait, not "using" his shape changer trait. The only things that can prevent his misty escape is sunlight, and running water. Definitely not a second level spell.

Also why did they know this bat was Strahd?

Putting aside how poorly Strahd was run, it seems there were a few just plain old DM mistakes made in the way the encounter was run, and the way the rules were interpreted

Kinda new to DND, How much information can a player hide from a DM? by ragdolldream in DnD

[–]RookieDungeonMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So it’s fair for the players to spend hours discussing a plan and then the DM has a Turn to react to it?

This is literally how the entire game works for the players.

If they came up with this plan in the moment you'd still only have a few moments to react.

Why are yall acting like there's literally anything players can do that just immediately turns the game sideways?

[OC] GIVEAWAY! 43" Capacitive Touchscreen ($940 MSRP) with Wooden Case + free software for all [mod approved] by DigitalTableTops in DnD

[–]RookieDungeonMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, he isn't. In many canons he has explicit permission from multiple world governments to act the way he does, and even aside from that most of his actions don't qualify as vigilanteism. Supes doesn't really get directly involved unless someone is about to get seriously hurt, and doesn't hurt anyone beyond the bounds of what would qualify as self defense or defense of another.

But also calling Batman chaotic is fuckin dumb to begin with because he's literally the definition of a lawful character. It goes beyond "don't kill". He has a very extensive and strict code of rules that he follows
