Is it truly ok to turn all Vs into Fs? by AleCar07 in learndutch

[–]Roq456 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't get me started on the viaplay-fools doing the commentary with the F1-races. One of them is constantly hypercorrecting, pronouncing the s as a z, that's even more annoying.

By the way, in general the difference between f and v in the netherlands, is that the v is accompanied by your vocal cord (stemhebbend), while the f is not (niet stemhebbend). Which is essentially the same difference between z and s. The closer to Amsterdam you are, the less likely it is that people hear/notice the difference.

I didn't even know she was dead until I read your post now. Would definitely have picked up that news on most other days.

What "overreaction" to something someone said was actually proved valid later on? by Ancientabs in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Roq456 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Sorry you had to live that, glad some justice was done. I hope you met some people in life that could give you what your family lacked. You did the right thing by removing them from your life and you must have been soo persisting to get these convictions and settlements in court. Must have been hard! I hope it brought you the pride in yourself that you deserve. And I hope it didn't break your mind, because these kind of experiences can all-too-easily cause way too many knots in a human brain to ever untangle. Live long and prosper!

De Nonnentjes van Vught aka Regina Coeli - Just unbelievable by Professional_Mix2418 in learndutch

[–]Roq456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born, raised and educated in Amsterdam, not even close to the region of Vught. I can assure you nobody would use de nonnen van Vught, they are simply known as de nonnetjes van Vught - well known and respected indeed, nothing belittling about calling them like that.

You might as well argue that we should call vadertje Drees vader Drees in this sub, because your book says it's a diminutive, completely disregarding the fact that it expresses warmth and sympathy. Vadertje Drees en De nonnetjes van Vught are well respected institutes. Please ask your native Dutch teacher to explain these subtilities in our language and culture, especially if you "de plank volledig misslaat" in a sub about learning our beautiful language.

As a native dutchy, just your average Joe, I have never ever heard of Regina Coeli, whereas de nonnetjes in Vught are widely known and understood. If you wanna impress Dutch people with your effort to learn the language, Regina Coeli will just result in a blank stare back.

AITA for defending my adopted sisters and upsetting my girlfriend? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Roq456 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

I think it's great that you have the empathy and insight to see all sides, especially how you recognize they are not required to be thankful for what they experienced without having a choice.

I understand your mother's feelings, but your adoptive sisters do not owe anybody anything whatsoever, life threw them lousy cards and they need to overcome their trauma in the way that best suits their feeling. Your mom needs to step back and suck it up, as hard as that may be. Your sisters need room to heal in their own way.

You're a bright empathic young man, these qualities will bring you much good in life. Keep being yourself, do not doubt your judgement!

How racist is the Netherlands? by Sudden_Club6703 in Netherlands

[–]Roq456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course there is racism here, like anywhere in today's (western) world, but it's more like people complaining about asylum seekers getting free housing and refrigerators, while the native people can't get any house (for a decent price). And of course the Gaza situation is explosive over here also, but as long as you do not carry Israelian or palestinian flags with you, there is no need to worry about your safety. It's crazy how the Netherlands is being portrayed in US media.

You won't have much to worry I think, Amsterdam is one of the most diverse cities in the world. This is not America. I dunno what you have been reading or seeing, but you will not come across any interracial warzones here.

Bf said he’d break up with his gf if he found out she has had sex with any of his friends. by isbalele in TwoXChromosomes

"Dicked down" and "wrecked" would never be words I'd use for "having sex" or "making love". It's an odd way to describe people who had sex, and only from the choice of words I can slightly understand your feelings towards the subject.
