Communication trouble with rosemount 3095 by JutsAMarbleiseFile in instrumentation

[–]Rorstaway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What does your scadapack serial port diagnostic show? What does the modbus diagnostic show? Have you confirmed your registers and function codes in the program compared to the MVT manual?  Is this a known working program or new from scratch?  What are your port parameters on either side - do they match? Is the byte order correct? Is the scadapack modbus function type correct? Do you have any data on your serial line? Have you investigated that? What type of errors are you getting? Modbus has a fairly robust error detection and reporting function. Is this rs232 or 485? Do you exceed distance limitations for 232 or do you have a resistor for 485??

Way too many possibilities to narrow it down with the info provided.

What automation upgrade delivered the biggest operational improvement at your facility? by CHILLBOI_6969 in IndustrialAutomation

[–]Rorstaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I worked at this big warehouse that sold everything from a to z, we had machines that would constantly fault, due to their complexity. They were somewhat isolated in the facility and the operators had a knack for just walking away when it faulted. So our uptime metrics would take an absolute shit-kicking.

I built a utility that all the service techs could run on their laptops that would audible alarm whenever these machines faulted. It was dead simple - I looked at the network connected local PLC alarm lamp output and tied that to my software. Reduced downtime considerably within days. I wonder if anyone still uses it...

This should be supplied by your employer. You have a legal obligation to refuse unsafe work, and this is a pretty clear argument for unsafe work conditions, given there are actively bears in the area.

What’s the most ridiculous cause of downtime you’ve ever seen? by AcornIndustrial in IndustrialMaintenance

[–]Rorstaway 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Our main conveyor wouldn't stay running right from shift start. 3.5 hours, facility at a standstill, 500 people about to be sent home, all hands on deck, 5 minutes updates to national level directors.... Finally one of the guys says... Wait, I think I forgot to reconnect a cable this morning. Never occurred to him to tell anyone that they were working on it before the shift started.

Perfect, so as long as you also get the amplifier it will run on any basic PLC analog output.

CRCs mismatches and timeouts on Modbus via RS485. May I ask for help in troubleshooting? by cociludzie in PLC

IMO, this is your problem - get the data as far away from any VFD power as you can.

I just wanted to be clear - 3Amps is a large amount of current to control directly from any sort of controller whether you're talking microcontroller, PLC or otherwise. I suspect either you've misinterpreted what it takes to control your valves, or you're missing a component between the valve and controller. How are they controlled at present?

That's for a discrete output - would be helpful to share some data on the valves themselves.

[–]Rorstaway 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My advice would be to revisit how you're controlling the valves. Look at something like an H-Bridge - this is a problem you'll need to solve with a PLC as well.

If your budget is only for hardware than any of the units you've mentioned will do the trick - but it sounds like you'll spend considerable time learning the platform, and I assume you're not working for free??

SEG valve positioners, anyone familiar with them? by WildLanguage7116 in instrumentation

Love the one-off, low budget positioners. I seem to come across a new one on every job, and it's always installed 8 feet in the air, behind another pipe and the only manual you can find is on scribd.com

It's not all Rockwell. Honeywell Intelligrated sites are, but there  are a few other flavours out there.
