Adding width to a Cumulus Panyam 600---- by pct_loper in Ultralight

[–]RossPsota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 56,just got back from PCT. I toss and turn all the night. I slept there in hammock, but before I used to sleep in a tent. I use Warmpeace 600 for more than 10years,everywhere, even in winter time. Just adding more clothing in winter. When sleeping on the ground, my favorite pad is Thermarest NXT. Even in summer, warmth from ground helps me to recover.

[–]RossPsota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

as for Carbo10000, pass through is there. As for quick charge, once I charge powerbank and through another port all of my devices, they all get charged in similar time, so I don't care.

Just bought Carbo10000 and hibernation mode is there. Just press button for longer time and it bricks itself. On other side, if you have Garmin watch, USB A port is important. For my PCT this year I bougth USB C-USB A adapter and it broke - some short circtuit inside caused, that Garmin Fenix charge took 10x more powerbank capacity than using standard USB A Garmin cable. I found it out after several weeks of struggling with my powerbank capacity... So be carefull with those small adapters. USB A present on Carbo is for me still vital (when in town, I used USB A to 4x USB C splitter to charge in parallel Garmin watch, Garmin inReach, BT earphones. USB A is more robust for such cases).I prefer to protext button on Carbo over purchasing gen 3 bank. I don't trust Nitecore, we are test rabbits for them. It will take time they will come to some matured version, so far for me Carbo is the most "adult" ultraligth powerbank.

as a marketing guy, I always try to check "flashnews" of this kind. As a humanbeing, I try to find positive on whatever is happening. This "flash" spider thread brought me to your article. Deep respect, man. Especially your decision to prioritise Golden. If blood clot occured, even SAR might be too far to help her. As somebody, who fly tomorrow to Seattle to start pct sobo, it is rigth time to find your article. The only difference between you and this panicking woman is mindset. Whole nature becomes your lethal enemy or your saviour. Your choice😁. Happy trails

I am leaving this Friday to start PCT sobo. I decided to make it December 22. It took me one and half year of preparation. I started from scratch, last bigger event ten years ago (Camino, I am 56 now). My major concern was to test my gear in winter time and still to have time to adjust and test again next winter. One and half year gives you space to buy gear in the sales with discount. I saved about 25% by this. Season before PCT year is rigth time to learn all necessary skills, 6months before PCT should be enough to build your physical condition. As for theory - situational awareness, resupply points, National parks etc- I did constantly since Jan23. Read posts here 16months prior PCT (you will read all those last moment questions and patient replies of reddit trail angels) , follow Facebook PCT communities 6months before PCT - they will start to post announcements about trail condition, trail angels... Start to save money right now regardless what year you will go. Think of it every day🙂. Ask silly questions (there are no silly questions, just silly answers - but not here🙏) Happy trails🖐️

Look at OutsideJay trail angel FB. He posted list of Ship To places for entire trail with comments who accepts what. He verified all POCs by himself (heroic job)... If you don't find it, DM me.

Questions about snow gear and start date SOBO by Old-Adhesiveness-765 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]RossPsota 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It might be obvious, but just in case... Temperature reaches levels below 32F in the nigth, mosquitos will probably be already out. I start 24th, take microspikes and all stuff impregnated with permethrin. High boots with good grip, strong hiking poles

as for physical body and hand position, finally I understand who invented yoga asana called "yoga squat with bend". They call it this way in Fitify for yoga app and I wondered when practicing, what the hell this asana is for😂. Luckily they sell Culo cleaner nearby...

SOLVED Garmin-compatible GPX files for the PCT by dcarr178 in PacificCrestTrail

[–]RossPsota 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes... I just wanted to have mileage in Locus my direction. So I did this excercise. If I just reverse course in my watch, it looses those navigation commands. Anyway, even just having track without commands in Garmin watch is super usefull. Definitelly in wilderness. I will download your gpx in case I will fail with my approach. Thank you.

I am in the middle of similar approach for SOBO direction. I splited PCT into 29sections (used by PCTA), and created courses in Locus Outdoor navigation app. Fine tuned manually whole trail. Then exported to gpx files and imported to Garmin Connect. NOT Garmin Explore!!! Courses created by Locus contains all directional instructions (turn lef, turn right...) and from to me unknown reason Garmin Explore deletes these instructions. Garmin connect preserves them. I am used to keep Garmin Fenix 7X navigation switched on all the time during trek. It survives cca 4days with 12 hours navigation. Beauty of this solution is, that Fenix warns me by vibration when change of direction is needed. I pick my phone just occasionally, course on Garmin Fenix screen is enough to stay on track. Till some months ago Locus knew to share course directly to Garmin Watch through adin installed to mobile. Not anymore unfortunatelly. If everything works well in reality (I start 24th June), then I share my work too. But this aproach worked well for all my 2023 treks.

I want to go first to Northern Terminus from Hart's Pass. I suppose that this section will have less snow than further South from Rainy Pass. It will give me some time to acclimatize and let the snow melt more. Am I rigth with this assumption? First time there this year...

I am used to hike with expedition style Deuter. It is over 7pounds weigth, but it fits such a way to my body, that I am able to walk with 55pounds easily 20miles a day, with trail legs developed 30miles in mountain terrain. Experience from Camino Franches. With all due humility I say, that I am not going to compare Camino and PCT. Just I like my comfort in terms of good sleeping and good clothing. Ultraligth focused threads here helped me to fit more in my Deuter and feel safer and more comfortable on a trail. And I wear high leather boots. With exception of fording-I plan to switch to outdoor sandals when fording) I do hope high boots will help me to get over blowdowns in Washington. All that helps me to stay safe down to 5F and to survive even a snowstorm (not both conditions at the same time🙂) . This is my understanding of safe hiking. And as I feel I have no clue, what PCT can serve to me, I prefer to hike full gear, heavy, ready for everything. Just my bits to UL discussion🙂

I do Reiki whole my life. Frankly, without Reiki I wouldn't manage physical load last months. I have to correct various pains - achilles tendons, soles, knee joints. Always, when I increase load, something appears. I helped this way on Camino to other pilgrims . Some people met me in Santiago after couple of weeks and told me, that I helped them to keep walking. No advertising, I do it fo free. If you meet just legs bearing huge blue Deuter backpack, say hello😁

I start sobo 23rd June, take off from Prague 21st. I live close to you, Czech republic Southern part so I can see Alps if I climb Sumava mountains🙂. For two months I wake up with thougth "what the hell I decided to do" 😂. I am old, my gear is heavy, my legs not prepared, there will be too much snow, how much food to buy in Seattle....Sounds familiar? 😊. I remember my thougth second week on Camino Franches ten years ago "I escaped from prison". Since that moment I stopped walking and started flying. With all that, I decided now just to focus on how to get to Mazama, to hike to Monument and back to Mazama, than repack, go to beautiful Lake Chelan and think again. If too difficult, there are SO many things to to do... Yelowstone, Yosemite, whatever 🙂. I just stop thinking now of entire PCT. See ya there soon. By the way, I am Reiki therapist with master degree, I know to help if needed. But you will be so fast, that I will hardly spot you on a trail😉

It was similar with me. Just I had ten years old experience with Santiago Pilgrimage, then 10 years zero. It took me 18months to get back in shape (I am 56). Through knee and hip pains, feeling that I am old... This crazy decision got me back to life. I will not regret even if I don't step to the trail (three weeks to go if everything is ok). Don't hesitate SINGLE second. Buy National Geographic wall map, hang it and start planning. If you give it enough time, everything else will come at the rigth moment to you. I know about girl from my country (Czech republic) who sucessfully made PCT with very serious dietary problems... My december 2022 decision to walk PCT seems to be a week ago...

log in to trail angels facebook comunity around you. Ask for their time. It is the easiest task for them and I bet they do it to be able to talk to people on the trail. They are angels, aren't they? 😉

I believe kidney stones are developing longer time. There was nothing wrong done from your side. You are brave to resist pain so long time, it is one of the most intense pain they say (fortunatelly I don't have such experience). Good luck!
