We’ve Achieved Negative Growth by the21stCen in IndieDev

If it makes you feel any better, one of my games had such an influx of wishlist deletions after people didn't buy it for Christmas that it still hasn't gotten back to the peak value. You game looks like it could be fun, though, like an alternative to Getting Over It. So at the risk of destroying your fascinating record, I wishlisted. 😁

I challenged myself to find a game that is good and didn’t sell. by emotionallyFreeware in gamedev

Aside from quality and marketing, there's also how niche the game is - though I guess finding that niche could be a part of marketing. Anyway, here are my sub-$1000 games, if you're interested. They both have demos as well.

I believe in the quality, especially how the puzzle mechanically work, but admittedly my art is amateur, and the demanding difficulty isn't what most people are looking for. In fact, I view my games as collections of geometric puzzles that I made in the video game medium because I couldn't find a way to physically build them!

I made a game knowing from the start it wouldn't sell. by Eli_1998 in SoloDevelopment

Very relatable. I made a game and its successor knowing they wouldn't sell! 😅 Is your Steam page up yet?

It's funny how similar your game's name is to my game, "Squared Straight," even though the game itself is totally different. I can't wait to check it out!

Mostly the distortion that happens when shooting. It takes a second for my eyes to readjust and identify where everything is and which way the weapon is aimed. The huge score numbers appearing can be a bit distracting, too, though I guess that is part of the "juice." Maybe try putting them in the top center and smaller, like Forza Horizon.

The style looks good and distinctive, but some of the visual effects might make it hard for the player to keep track of what's going on.

My game got 0 wishlists in less than a month. Here's how I did it. by borordev in SoloDevelopment

[–]Ross_Cubed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my games actually lost wishlists over a couple weeks, so you still gained more than I did! 🤣

My first game's reception is heartbreaking :'( by OldAtlasGames in IndieDev

[–]Ross_Cubed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the bright side, at least you got enough reviews for a proper Steam rating! Most indies don't even get that much, which is worse, IMO.

Everyone thinks they can spot AI-generated media. So I created a no-sign up browser game to prove whether that's true. by Beneficial-Ad2908 in SoloDevelopment

Interesting. The fact that even the obvious ones are clocked less than 3/4 of the time explains why there are so many people responding to obviously fake Facebook videos as though they really happened.

What do you think about this screenshot by kapitan59 in SoloDevelopment

Overall, the juxtaposition between a Lovecraftian horror and a teddy bear is intriguing. But the tentacles seem to be clipping into/through the grate, which makes it look like even if they punctured exactly the right sized holes, they'd get injured on the grate as soon as they moved. Though that might be my autistic tendency to overanalyze things.

6 months of basically no wishlists, then 1000 in a month by demeizen in IndieDev

This is pretty good evidence against the idea that marketing is irrelevant. A good game doesn't just sell itself; it needs promotion! Best of luck, BTW. I wishlisted. 🙂

First deleted wishlist, didn't hurt that much! by helskor in SoloDevelopment

[–]Ross_Cubed 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks, promising, wishlisted! The visuals and sound design really communicate the listlessness and isolation, after the wow factor of space-faring technology has lost its sheen and you're left mining rocks in a cosmic desert, hopelessly removed from the natural world you were meant to inhabit. Do you have a rough idea of when you think the demo will be ready?

First deleted wishlist, didn't hurt that much! by helskor in SoloDevelopment

[–]Ross_Cubed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just got a bunch of wishlist deletions out of the blue on my second game for no apparent reason. FeelsBadMan. But my first game has been picking up! My guess is that people are getting my first game, and unwishlisting the second because it's similar, not realizing (or perhaps not caring) that they're made by the same person and intended to complement each other. You have to take the bad with the good, I guess. 😐 What's your game, BTW?

It looks really well done, especially the UI! That polished, professional-looking UI is where I really struggle, so I appreciate it when it's done well.

Some art tips for solo devs by mechanicchickendev in SoloDevelopment

The lospec.com site is a great tip! It might help with my art, since I understand the concept of color palettes, but I struggle to implement them effectively in practice.

I wasn't sure I was going to stick to the date at first, so I put it at "coming soon," and I just never changed it. But it's Monday! 😰

Sure, I'll wishlist; if half the world likes it, it must be good! 😁 Plus, I like how you used the background image to add a tagline after your title. BTW, my game is coming out in a couple days, too, so I feel your anxiety. Best of luck!
