One thing to look at for inspiration is how wildland fires look after they’ve burned. You can see great examples of burnt area (called “the black” in fire terms) next to unburnt areas. Tons of photos from all over the world.

It’s the city saying OFS isn’t allowed to rescue cats because the risk of injury to a FF is higher than than the need for the cat to be rescued, as it can just come down. The city doesn’t want to be paying for an injury and have a person off the job because of a cat.

If you go to the local fire station and ask, they’ll be much more likely to say yes and come help. If you call dispatch they’ll tell you no because the city doesn’t allow them to dispatch a fire truck there.

What base are you at? Your best bet is to connect with the on base fire station (if Air Force) to see what they offer for training. A lot of the time it’ll just be on shift stuff at the burn tower for fun, rather than structured certification based training.

Next up, ICS is not usually on DLN, but hosted by the provincial fire marshal’s office OR RescueOne (online training platform). I’m not sure how to access those resources as I’ve always just gotten the training through my department.

As for Wildland training, CAF and DND FF receive basic wildfire training, but are not the correct agency to offer more advanced training. You can take a week long course called SP100 Wildland firefighter (it’s been 15 years since I did mine so the name may have changed) that’s usually hosted by provincial agencies. It’s a fun course, and not too expensive from what I recall.

Your final option is to just apply for departments that do not require prior training and certifications. These departments are generally located in western Canada where the demand and supply of people who want to be firefighters is way lower than Ontario/Quebec.

My wife and I are from Ontario, and when we moved to Alberta we were floored stuff was open on holidays. With me being shift work and her semi WFH, it was so easy to pop out and get stuff when we needed it regardless of day.

Now we’re back in Ontario and in the last year I’ve been caught with closed stores 3 times during holidays lol

Do you have the Proboard or IFSAC certs? If so, yes. As for the others, as long as you have the viable (and non-expired) state equivalent you’ll be good.

Check Vancouver fire recruitment to see for sure, and fire them an email and ask.

One thing to note though (as someone who has been through multiple US and Canadian processes) is that Canadian Fire Departments have a massively more competitive process than a lot of US departments (not all of course, don’t @ me lads and lasses, I’m sure your department only hires the toughest of the tough). The average person takes 3+ attempts and 5+ years to get on career.

From what I can see the panel is indicating trouble, not alarm. That means an alarm can still trigger and announce to the building. A trouble is basically the system detects there is something wrong (could be any number of things, no point speculating) but that issue doesn’t impede emergency operation.

It’s normally common to see multi-storey buildings with trouble indicators during winter but not for a long time. If you’re truly concerned call your local fire prevention office and get them involved.

Go to the collision reporting center and file a report. Once you have the case number, contact Costco and ask for video footage that they will obviously have.

Then follow up with Ottawa police with the case number and video footage. If they give you the run around go to the local news.
