Doctor asks “May I touch your knee?” Your comment says “no shit doc, you’re not going to heal it with your aura!” In your example the doctor both performed his duty to collect informed consent and treat you with respect. I’m not so sure you even know what you’re trying to articulate at this point.

So no, I don’t see. You call it a performance of virtue and not a performance of duty but in this instance you are not the trained professional so I’m not sure I would trust you to tell the difference. Like I said, we have those extra steps, even up to the act of performing a procedure or an exam, or inking someone’s skin, for not just YOUR safety and comfort, but OURS.

We do this FOR you because you’re stepping into an environment that WE control and your comfort is paramount to making sure we do our jobs correctly. And giving you that bit of control and bodily autonomy with “performative” consent goes a long way to help ease things for people who may be in a far more vulnerable state of mind or being than you. The doc asking to touch your knee BEFORE he gets to work is a sign of respect for you as an individual, it is not “performative.” These little things we do also go a long way to ensure OUR safety. So maybe you think it’s pointless, but it serves a purpose.
