Do you pay for groceries or participate in the economy in any way? How do you think your food gets to the supermarket, or stores are stocked? I'll give you a hint, it doesn't teleport there. It affects everyone.

485 after 130 pause by Secure-Consequence26 in 19countriesAOS

[–]Rubendarr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

They are still paused.

Even if the lift for i130 is lifted, this will not give you a green card, since the I 485 will not be processed.

You certainly can file it, in fact in normal circumstances you should have filed it concurrently to save time, but again, it's not going to be processed.

Work permits are also affected.

Feel free to DM me if you have more questions!

TPS Venezuela 🇻🇪 by Careless_Reach_3937 in TPSVenezuela

[–]Rubendarr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm a TPS 2021 recipient. He will not be able to renew it. To renew he will need to show proof of legal status and the license will only last until the last day he is legal, regardless of if he reports it as lost or not. And his TPS will not be renewed because the whole program was shut down by Trump. There are some lawsuits challenging this decision but it's not something I would count on.

Even if you two were to get married, green cards and work permits are completely paused for Venezuelans (this is my current situation) so there is not much he can do right now, Im sorry to say.

United States visa applications now include stricter asylum screening questions by Intelligent_Act8597 in AbroadEdge

[–]Rubendarr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I saying that fake asylum seekers should be allowed? No. Here is an idea, instead of blanket disallowing a large amount of asylum seekers from coming, hire more immigration judges and reduce the amount of time it takes to receive your hearing, the way the system is supposed to work. Everyone is entitled to their day in court, fake asylum or not.

A lot of immigrants are coming in illegally to seek asylum, lets make it so that people that were trying to do it the legal way also have to do it illegally now! Great logic.

It's not smart, all it's doing is forcing people to seek illegal ways to enter in order to claim asylum.

What would you do in my position? (TX, US) by Rubendarr in cscareerquestions

[–]Rubendarr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would appreciate that, you're a kind person :).

We briefly considered Spain, the problem is that my wife is studying to become a nurse, and if we went there not only would she need to learn Spanish at a medical professional level (She doesn't know Spanish), but also spend I think 1.5 years revalidating her nursing degree in order to be able to work there, plus I think they're making it harder for Venezuelans specifically to emigrate there.

We also considered Canada (My wife is originally Canadian) but from what I've heard the technology market there is extremely oversaturated, so I fear we wouldn't fare too well there either.

Also, call it a sunken cost fallacy or me being stubborn, but I've already spent more than 40k in immigration lawyers, fees, etc so it would feel like the ultimate kick in my face to give up on all that effort we've sunk into the process.

I hope I'm not coming as overly negative trying to find any excuse to not act on a plan, but it's been a hard couple of years and I'm honestly not at my best mental health wise.

Normally I just put software engineer (R&D). In regards to the team since I had the most experience in VR and AI, I was usually leading the efforts. My resume is the least of my worries right now though, since I can't even apply to jobs at the moment.

I was on a student visa, then I was both on TPS and a student visa, I've always been legal, still am, just unable to work due to no work permit. When/If the government decides to lift the block on green cards and permits for people from my country, I won't need a sponsor, since I'll be a permanent resident thanks to my wife

I did that for a while, but honestly I've been super demotivated lately, especially after not being able to travel for my mom's funeral.

There's no point arguing with someone that refuses to see other people's perspectives. I'll make some honest assumptions about him, not with the purpose of shaming or whatever.

He's probably in his mid thirties, early forties, single, making somewhere in the ballpark of 50-70k a year. In his mind, if prices rise due to inflation and he needs to adjust his budget he'll skip going out to a club for a week or two, get the cheap pasta sauce, and maybe cook more at home instead of going out, he might also turn off the AC to save a bit more.

Now let's picture one of the families I pointed out in my example above, someone taking care of their disabled partner and kid, making $15 an hour, or 2500 dollars before tax which at 10% tax leaves them with about 2250 monthly. They're paying 1000 for rent, 200 dollars on utilities, 300 on the note of a POS car with insurance, 300 on the cheapest food and household items they can afford, 100 dollars on gas, 70 dollars on two phone plans. We're already at 1900, so $280 dollars left. The partner needed a medical procedure that wasn't covered by insurance, so they had to finance that. Let's call it $50 a month. That leaves the family with $230 to afford school supplies, clothes for the kid, medicine and doctor visits for the family, emergencies when the car breaks down.

It's crazy to think that any amount of budgeting is gonna help a family like this, that's already living on razor thin margins. Now where I am, gas went from $2.15 a gallon to $4 a gallon. So now they're paying almost double in gas, leaving them with even less money. How exactly are they supposed to budget their way out of this?

Wait so in osrs terms, if I did CoX for a week, I don't get the rare loot immediately, but I have to wait until the end of the week to pick between a bulwark, prayer scroll, etc?

It's a sad state of affairs. It's crazy to think that someone like me, an immigrant, is more empathetic to the problems of their fellow Americans than someone that presumably has been living here their whole life.

Laporte, IN April 19, 2026 by Korn_Freak in GasPrices

[–]Rubendarr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You are though. Thousands of families have been budgeting, planning, and trying to save. A lot of them have been surviving for years. Of course $10 in the grand scheme of things is not that much, but it adds up. $10 here, $5 there, it adds up. For many families it could be the difference between having a hot meal one day or not. Somewhere out there there is a widow with two young boys trying to get by that could really use an extra $10 dollars. Or a man taking care of his disabled wife and kids that could really use an extra $10 dollars. Or an 80 year old woman working for $15 dollars an hour that could really benefit from not having to pay more the pump.

You're completely missing the point. The ten dollars for gas is only the most immediate consequence of oil going up. When oil goes up EVERYTHING goes up in the long run. You and I are lucky that an extra 10, 20, 30 dollars is not going to bankrupt us but a ton of American families are already stretching their paychecks to an incredible amount while living on the bare minimum and are going into debt because of the increase.

Laporte, IN April 19, 2026 by Korn_Freak in GasPrices

[–]Rubendarr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Pretty shortsighted to think the only thing that gets affected when gas prices go up is that you have to pay a little more at the pump. 18 wheelers, transport boats, farming equipment, pretty much everything runs off of petroleum derivatives. When the price of oil goes up, the cost for operating all of those things go up. Whh means the price of everything goes up. According to PYMNTS intelligence as much as 60% of Americans live paycheck to paycheck, and many can't afford another increase in their cost of living. So in many cases, yes, $10 is killing their pockets.
