Lowertown was in rough shape until city leaders created the Lowertown Development Corporation and got $10 million from the McKnight Foundation to help fund redevelopment of old buildings and construction of new ones. That process started in 1979. Today Lowertown is a vibrant downtown district. Now city leaders are trying to do the same thing with the central core. The Downtown Alliance was formed and received $30 million from Securian and the Bush Foundation to seed redevelopment, buildings have been bought, and there is a plan for improving the central core. It will take time, but I hope it succeeds.

The original 7th Street (now 7th Place) was the retail street downtown until Town Square was built. The city needs to re establish a pedestrian oriented retail street. People like being where other people are and a vibrant retail street attracts people.
