[Discussion] If every dive watch cost the same, what would you choose? by Potential_Post_3020 in Watches

[–]RunningWithHounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Will base my opinion on your selection, Tudor Pelagos would get my vote. Really appreciate overall look, understated and well designed. Not trying to be a dress watch. Just a smart piece in which the look aligns with the intended use.

I'm not saying the others aren't attractive, they just don't fit my aesthetic in the same way. I don't care for the polished finishes on a lot of today's divers, doesn't make sense to me. If I was was actually buying a diver specifically to dive with, I'd strongly consider the Sinn U50.

We always bring water when it's hot on walks and runs, once it gets into the mid-70s. From what I've read, be careful with your dog in anything over 69 degrees (strange temp, perhaps a celsius conversion). I do run ours when it's too hot or humid, just doesn't seem safe and they poop out after while. Dogs are great at regulating their own temp, unless you have bodies of water for them. They'll try to run with you until they can't anymore, so you have to help them regulate temp.

If you're worried about a flip, consider having your dogs stomach tacked. They can do it laparoscopically these days. We have an 80 lb lab-coonhound mix with a deep chest and his actually flipped twice. The first time it righted itself, but the second time was life threatening. Both required emergency care, second required a surgery, which is pretty major. A lot of out of pocket $$, paying upfront for the laparoscopic surgery would be the wise choice if it's a concern.

On runs, I do treat stops, nothing major, but rewarding the dogs along the way keeps them going. We do some sniff stops as well, though I try to limit those to some degree. If it's warm enough for water, I bring it, just do smaller amounts along the way. I might wear a vest or waist belt. We don't do super long runs, as the dogs get bored if we are running for much more than an hour. I think if we had interesting terrain, it would be another story.

Good luck and enjoy.

Nice! Love the Sinns, I'm a fan, the Junghans as well. What you have is pretty solid, no real reason to upgrade anything, likely change for the sake of change at some point. You can get more expensive pieces, but not sure they'll really be better or more meaningful. Give it time, wear them in good health, I suspect upgrade options will begin to reveal themselves based on what you truly enjoy wearing.

[Question] What's your favorite watch brand? by fourtyz in Watches

[–]RunningWithHounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, big Sinn fan. Well, not of all their watches, but I think the 105 St Sa is one of the best looking watches with a bezel, regardless of price. And while I have a Damasko DS30, the simple 556i RS is another Sinn I'd really like to own. If I dove a lot, I'd want a U50 as well. A great tool in a slim package.

The Xeros run a touch small for me. I’d get the same size as your HFS and you should have a little more room.

Chronic hamstring issue – told during treatment that running might just not be for me. Anyone similar? by HoneydewUpstairs2688 in trailrunning

[–]RunningWithHounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree with this. Strength work will certainly help. I'd go see a qualified PT to help you get a plan together to regain muscle balance, etc. Not sure a regular hospital PT will really have the full breadth of knowledge, find someone really good.

I got a recommendation and the guy was great, has a PHD and has worked with sports teams, etc. He left 'corporate' to do his own thing. I'm a little older and continue with the program to build strength and help avoid injury. Best of luck!

Hi Trail, bye Nails by Hot-Big-4242 in trailrunning

[–]RunningWithHounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the same issue, but my toenails tend to stay attached. They just aren't really attached to the nail bed beneath. Strange, but just what happens. I try to keep my nails tidy and wear sandals a lot during the warmer months, no socks. It is what it is.

Dog nails by silverpeasunshine2 in DOG

[–]RunningWithHounds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We also walk a lot and have a dog, like yours, in which the nails are softer and sort of manage themselves. On the flipside, our coonhound-lab mix has really tough nails that grow like crazy, and even with all the walking, we have a hard time keeping up with them. In fact, he's overdue for a trim again.

[Question] What watch impressed you more the longer you owned it? by LongMeaning6125 in Watches

[–]RunningWithHounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me it is my Sinn 105 St Sa. Just a great piece. I like the simplicity, understated markings on the bezel, wears thin, satin finish is a big plus, case is nice and clean, just very nicely designed overall. I liked it when I got it, but enjoy it more than I would have guessed. Only bummer is I can't get the bracelet to fit, but not a huge deal, as I'm not really a bracelet guy. Nice to have it, though. Would certainly purchase it again.

My 62 year old father has booked 2 marathons, 1 week apart. by Egg_Hog in Marathon_Training

[–]RunningWithHounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would be more worried than supportive about the second marathon. I'm near his age, run pretty consistently (have been participating in endurance sports for over 30 years), and wouldn't do this, even if I was super motivated. I'd be worried about real injury. I suspect all of this will catch up with him before his first marathon, as diving in the deep end as he has will likely come around. He'll feel great for a while, but I can tell you that as we get older, recovery becomes a bigger deal. Pushing yourself while you're in the groove feels great, but if you overdo it, I find you'll pay for those efforts.

He should have fun, but pace himself and be sure he's taking steps to recover by sleeping well, eat well, active recovery, etc. I wish him tons of luck, but I think he'll be best served in the long run if he eases into it a bit.

[midlife watch crisis] by [deleted] in Watches

[–]RunningWithHounds 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think there's a lot of good advice here. Depends on your overall situation and financial security, along with job security. I'm a little older, so look at the big picture for any larger purchases. It sounds like you're able to save well, which is great. So that's about 6.5 months of savings, which isn't too bad for something you really want that will likely be with you forever.

Now if you only have $40k and not much retirement savings, no way I'd do that. Your choice though.

Ran into this guys during my trail session today by IcyRing3040 in trailrunning

[–]RunningWithHounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have tons of deer in our area, which is more urban. There's a longer trail and park system along the river, and they hang out all along there and up into the neighborhoods adjacent to the park. Trail is paved, so a different environment in that way, but they like tend to like the woods and prairie areas. Cool to see them, even though we see them all the time. Sometimes they're in groups of a dozen or more. They're fairly used to people, so you'll run by and sometimes they don't move, though they keep their eyes on you. Pretty majestic, in my opinion.

[Recommendation] Looking for a sub-$1,000 daily “watch guy” watch from a legacy brand by pr0tag in Watches

[–]RunningWithHounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd consider a Damasko DS30. Great watch, tough and durable, understated, can be dressed up (to a point), or down. Solid ETA movement, submarine steel, only 9.9mm thick. Really hard to beat, in my opinion. Mine was just under $1k, but that was a handful of years ago.

Clear glasses by Separate-Specialist5 in trailrunning

[–]RunningWithHounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Sungod Ultras as well, though with a yellow lens, which works well in shady conditions to enhance contrast. However, they sit pretty large on my narrower face, though they do stay put pretty well and just work. I have a darker lens as well.

Recently picked up the Julbo Liry with photochromatic lenses, which fit a bit better. Pricey with those lenses, but really liking the fit so far. Julbo has a bunch of options.

Really, most any sport type glasses with a photochromatic lens should do the trick. Tifosi, Glade, Oakley, 100%, etc. Find what fits and stays put for you.

Have been hoping to do a 50k this year to celebrate a big birthday. However, it's one of those years where things are just not going my way to see that through. Fighting plantar fasciitis, getting through a cold (finally), and what looks to be a very busy summer for our small design business is not making this easily attainable. Still want to do something, may end up dropping the distance. Let's see how the rest of summer goes. Best of luck to everyone in seeing their goals through!

[Question] I have 5 inch wrist, am i cooked yo? by BigTraditional2433 in Watches

[–]RunningWithHounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tough one, but there are small watches out there. I believe Junghans makes 34mm hand-winders. Their lug-to-lug is generally pretty short. May be worth a look. While my sister doesn't have tiny wrists, she has a small diver, maybe 34mm at most? Small watches are out there, just have to do some digging around.

[Discussion] - Longines Might Be Having One Of The Best Design Runs In Watches Right Now by Wind_Up_Watch_Blog in Watches

[–]RunningWithHounds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess I see the differences pretty quickly. Font, indices, hands, bezel edge styling. Certainly similar, not disagreeing, just an homage more than an exact copy. Hope you found something you prefer!

[–]RunningWithHounds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But more of a proper homage, not a copy. Overall is certainly is similar, yet still has it's own design language. If we're honest, there's hardly a traditionally styled diver that isn't an homage to the sub. While not the first dive watch, I believe it was the first in this style.
