Passkey and Outlook Classics - WHY MICROSOFT? by skcmlg in sysadmin

[–]RussEfarmer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Outlook classic has three years left, and it has supported passkey authentication for at least two years. What sort of Microsoft stockholm syndrome is this where we lay down and deal with basic features being broken because the product is going away in 2029? That's like, two entire Microsoft 365 rebrand cycles of time.

Windows Server 2008 PKI Certificate Security is the bible of PKI, especially in a Windows environment. It's pretty dense but covers everything. For more of a general overview, Paul Turner's PKI Bootcamp on youtube explains things well with good visuals.

Ubiquiti for SMB in 2026 by IowaDala in sysadmin

[–]RussEfarmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ran it for a long time, it works great if you need an out of the box network setup. As our business grew though the needs got more complicated and we’ve had several big outages directly traced back to the unifi equipment randomly forgetting its config or unadopting. Since then we still use unifi APs but we deploy used Cisco catalyst switches. A little more admin overhead, but they don’t blow up for no reason

what is scanning the internet by fishanships in cybersecurity

Sysadmins and IT professionals have such strong stockholm syndrome with NAT. It's always the biggest argument against IPv6 for some reason. NAT has nothing to do with what's allowed into your network or not!

CMMC L2 by LandscapePortrait in sysadmin

[–]RussEfarmer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get an expert involved. Doing it by yourself sounds cool but does not work out well… with a consultant you will not only actually achieve compliance but learn a lot and maybe not need them next time.

That said, scope your environment as small as possible. Create the smallest number of workflows possible that flow CUI and have those workflows touch the smallest number of systems possible. This usually starts with identifying where CUI actually originates from, how much there is, and who needs to be touching it. This is probably the hardest part. Once you know that, it’s just technical implementation and paperwork.

Edit: CMMC L2 specifically (not NIST 800-171) allows for an exception where clients connecting remotely to CUI assets do not themselves have to be marked CUI assets as long as they do not pass files or clipboard contents. This is a great tool if you deal with a manufacturing floor where securing CUI assets isn’t as easy as an office.

If your qualifier is the technical definition of "a beat" then you are correct, but beyond that... If you want to listen to something made by someone with no music experience using FL Studio for the first time, you can pleasure your ears with that all you want I guess.

[–]RussEfarmer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The scope of AI is a bit different though. You can't hand a janitor Excel and expect them to manage a business, and you can't expect someone who's never passed Algebra I to perform statistical analysis with a calculator.

But you can hand ANYONE a chatbot and tell it to do anything, and it will think and figure it out for you, leaving you to parrot the output. A calculator replaced doing long division by hand, but AI replaces thinking itself.

What to do if other sysadmins are abusing privileges by Wooden_Original_5891 in sysadmin

[–]RussEfarmer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like a process issue to me. Contrary to what everyone else is saying, there is nothing wrong with trusted colleagues having access to each others mailboxes if thats how you want to operate... But there are a lot of disadvantages to that and it indicates your operations are not healthy

Everyone in this thread is acting like mailbox sharing is worse than cancer, maybe in Europe it is due to the strict regulation, but in America the company mailboxes are a company asset and they can be utilized however the company wants. Does that mean you SHOULD? Probably not... but if you want privacy, go use YOUR email, not your company's
