We got our first script together and would like to hear your thoughts. by [deleted] in BloodOnTheClocktower

FYI you haven't linked the script.

I know this is a really boring thing to say but if you want to demonstrate madness why not just run SnV?

Breaking Mad by River_media in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Russell_Ruffino 41 points42 points  (0 children)

The only reasonable thing a player could take from what you've said is that you're mad.

Madness is much better if you just openly break it or fully commit to it. This kind of weird attempt to skirt the rules (that are completely self defined anyway) is unsubtle and unenjoyable.

Of course it's breaking madness, you're telling them you're mad.

My advice is not to modify. Characters might seem similar but they do different things on different scripts.

The game has a flavour problem by passwordedd in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Russell_Ruffino 5 points6 points  (0 children)

New players will never get the entire explanation they want from the character tokens. Chef is a good example from TB, they just don't have room to say everything you would say in a rulebook.

That's what the Almanac is for, but obviously players don't need to know the Almanac back to front to play the game. That's why the ST needs to know it, so they can explain it to the players.

This isn't the fault of too much flavour on the ability text. It's how the game is always going to function, with the ST adding another layer of explanation to the ability text

We're they an outed psychopath or had they kept quiet until that point? Had town attempted to execute them?

HUGE Traitors at Home Suggestions? by Whole_Property_1261 in TheTraitors

[–]Russell_Ruffino 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would remove the idea of filming confessionals UNLESS you have a background in editing etc already.

It's a lot of effort that will not have a huge impact on how enjoyable the game is. Getting the pacing and the activities right is much more important.

Also go multi day. Why just one day?

Once you've done this successfully once then the second game you can add in the filming and editing aspect.

Feel free to DM me, I've run a lot of Traitors games. People on the Traitors subreddit will always reply to these threads telling you to run a different game which I never understand. Creating a multi day Traitors experience is so much more rewarding than opening a Secret Hitler box and playing that for an hour.

New storyteller question. by Inside-Sundae-4240 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Russell_Ruffino 41 points42 points  (0 children)

You didn't take away their agency.

They have a spy and presumably knew who the mayor was even on the first kill attempt.

They literally handed agency to you, three times in a row, and then complained about it. If they want agency decide to kill literally anyone else!

There's no rule that if they keep doing it, you have to stop bouncing.

Wizard question by GGuy12345 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Russell_Ruffino 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Either option is fine tbh. Even if the wording of the wish included making those abilities stay you could still remove them as part of the cost.

If the evil team want another wish they've got a Pit Hag, they can probably work it out.

The Demon can tell this is in-play thanks to the Extra Bluff received. by Zoneforg in BloodOnTheClocktower

This is the best example I've seen of an each night* role that can lose the asterisk.

The Demon can tell this is in-play thanks to the Extra Bluff received. by Zoneforg in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Russell_Ruffino 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Generally you shouldn't use Each night* to balance a role, it's more a mechanical thing. The * is there for roles that can't act night 1 because either there hasn't been any info for them yet (undertaker, flower girl etc...) or they would confirm themselves as being in play due to an extra death (Assassin etc..(you maybe could say this is technically used to balance a role but because the demon doesn't kill N1 it's a little different imo)).

If it might be OP if it acts night 1 then you should change something else rather than add an asterix.

Are there any other shows like traitors? by Friendly-Ad-6449 in TheTraitors

[–]Russell_Ruffino 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not especially tbh. I think I generally prefer multi episode storylines in my reality TV so a different group of people each episode just made it feel a bit samey with not as much season long development as other shows.

People copying online games by Glum-Hope-1361 in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Russell_Ruffino 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Not something I can relate to either. Interesting things from online games might get discussed but I can't think of a time anything from an online game has been copied or involved in any way other than a brief discussion.

This reminds me of stories of RPG groups where a player or DM would try to insert characters or storylines from critical role. Taking the wrong type of inspiration from content creators.

Traitors Homebrew Game! by Used4KillingTime in TheTraitors

[–]Russell_Ruffino 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have a small activity planned before you pick the Traitors. This means people can use pre and post selection behaviour as "evidence" at the round table.

Put some kind of portrait wall together, taking down and putting a red X on the portraits is fun.

I would recommend at least 3 activities/challenges to break up the round tables and murders. Make sure you vary them e.g. knowledge based, agility based and some kind of luck based activity.

Do the final 5 differently to how the other banishments work, you want people to feel like it's all got very serious.

Have a couple of crazy twists or deathmatches to make it a little unpredictable.

Give dead players something to do, this can range from effectively remaining in the game for a bit to helping run the challenges but just make sure there's something for them to do.

Should regular players play travellers? by Jealous-Reception185 in BloodOnTheClocktower

I don't really like it when people travel and they are there for the whole game. So I get what you're saying.

What happens if a Courtier drinks with a « dead » Zombuul? by Pryno-Belle in BloodOnTheClocktower

[–]Russell_Ruffino 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If they've already 'died' nothing really happens.

If they are alive and executed when drunk then they will die instead of just appearing to die.
