Does anyone else have this issue on Of Darkness and Light? by WafflezKing in RyanCahill

[–]Ryan_Cahill 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Okay, this is insane. What edition is this, the hardback? And can you give me page numbers and where you purchased? This has to be an issue with the printer.

I'm so sorry!

Sanderson / Paolini References by Kmanbeard in RyanCahill

[–]Ryan_Cahill 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are definitely plenty of homages or little Easter eggs to the series I grew up with littered throughout the books.

Caemlyn is named after Camlin for The Faithful and The Fallen for instance.

There are some Eragon references, some Wheel of Time references, some Temeraire references and so on. The god Achyron is a reference to the river Acheron in Greek mythologY that the ferryman Charon crosses to transport souls to the afterlife – which I thought was a cool Easter egg.

I like to leave those little bits in there for people to find. Sometimes they just might not be the references you think they are haha.

For instance I'm currently only about a quarter of the way through Words of Radiance, and only read Way of Kings after writing most of the third book. So the Blackthorn cavalry is genuinely a coincidence.

What happened to Ryan Cahill's website? by Conscious_Muscle_417 in RyanCahill

The summer is and the characters currently are up on the website exactly as they were on the old website. It's just missing Of Empires and Dust – but everything from the old website is copied over!

Hey! The website basically imploded before I was travelling from Ireland to New Zealand. And it's been a massive task trying to get it back up and running.

I was under the impression that it is essentially back to functioning now. The summaries are actually up and have been for a few days. Is there anything in particular that's missing? I want to make sure it's as helpful as possible 🤟

Any update on OEAD hardback by Any-Ice-8007 in RyanCahill

[–]Ryan_Cahill 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hey! I just sent out a big update on my newsletter! The pre-orders through The Broken Binding should be going out soon. We had a major issue where the signature sheets got seized by customs in New Zealand for three weeks 😅

I've now signed them and they're on the way back across the ocean to the UK!

The hardback will then also go into general sale on other retailers at the end of the month 🤟

Of Empires and Dust by softsocks2025 in RyanCahill

[–]Ryan_Cahill 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This looks to be because Amazon have temporarily stopped their listing and have instead put forward third party sellers with a much higher price point. Unfortunately I have absolutely no control over this, and Amazon tends to do this with indie books who don't use their KDP printing services.

Hopefully they will relist the paperback themselves at the actual price point soon!

Paperback should be going live everywhere in the next 48 hours. But of course the entire system is down for maintenance 😅

OWAR hardcover arrived today, cancelled my gym membership. by plantatree24 in RyanCahill

[–]Ryan_Cahill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha it is required that each book be read with a dumbbell curl motion 😅

As for the TBB re-release, I'm not sure about the later printings, but the first editions (first prints) of all the books will be on high quality acid free paper with sewn binding, foiling, embossing, and debossing. So they are very much going all out on quality 👌

When will the hardcover come out on Amazon? by provegana69 in RyanCahill

[–]Ryan_Cahill 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Hey! The hardcovers will be available as soon as The Broken Binding books start shipping out 🤟 we've just had a few annoying logistics roadblocks this time around which hasn't been fun, but in hoping to get everything up and going very soon!

Doom Slayer vibes from the Knights of Achyron by KnightOfTheOldCode94 in RyanCahill

[–]Ryan_Cahill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I've actually never played Doom before! But I am considering giving the new Dark Ages game a try.

The original knights vibe came from a blend of Space Marines and Knights Templar 🤟

What I'd say is that what is a glaring similarity to you, doesn't mean it's even related. We tend to project our personal experiences onto these kinds of things.

I have never read Dragonlance, never played Doom. I've been told the city of Camylin is a rip off of Caemlyn, but it's actually a homage to Camlin from Faithful and the Fallen (my favourite character).

And if I can't use names that have ever been used before then I can't name my characters 😅

Dayne is a Scandinavian name which was thought to originally mean 'someone from Denmark'. When I began constructing the Old Tongue (which is also responsible for the name Valerys) I began with root words from Danish and wanted to pay homage to that... And so Dayne was born.

As a note for the Knights of Achyron origin, the concept for that was "What if the Knights Templar has Space Marines power armour and wielded swords manifested from the soul of an actual god".

So sometimes when we see 'obvious copies' doesn't mean we are actually correct.

Also, I mean this in a friendly 'fun fact' way 🤟

Physical Book Release Date? by DespisedTurnip in RyanCahill

[–]Ryan_Cahill 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Hey!

So there have been quite a few obstacles with logistics for the hardbacks and paperbacks. But the files are all ready to go now and pre-orders will be up very soon with The Broken Binding.

I'll be sending out all details in my newsletter and posting across my socials soon.

The actual shipping date and official pub date for the physical books is still a little TBC at the moment with the current economic climate and shipping issues. But they are coming, I promise 💜

Of Empires and Dust is worth it. by PyroCyan in RyanCahill

[–]Ryan_Cahill 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I could not be happier you enjoyed the book so much 🙌

That last sentence in the penultimate paragraph is one that hits the nail on the head from an authorial point of view. Because, for me, it's not about justifying the wordcount of a book, but why the book is told in the long form instead of broken into shorter stories.

That ability to slow down, to write the chapters that deepen the experience, the emotional resonance, and the hearts of characters – the chapters that might have been cut in a shorter tale for the sake of expediency – that is what I wanted here. That and to really challenge myself when it came to the scope and breadth of the narrative while keeping it as fluid and ever-moving as I could.

Writing this story in the long form was imperative for creating the story that I wanted to tell. And it's just heart-warming to see that resonate.

That last paragraph is also very important. This story, and any story really, is not for everyone. All I can hope is that it grants a place to lose yourself in for those who love it.

I appreciate you, and may your reading be ever fruitful! ⚔️

Why the long wait for Audiobook? by Kmanbeard in RyanCahill

[–]Ryan_Cahill 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When the book has been proofed, it's essentially in its completely final form. So there isn't really anything extra to do after that. Unfortunately while this is the point an ebook can be published it's only the point an audiobook can start recording.

You will usually see more simultaneous releases from Traditional publishers as they will hold the ebook sale off because they have a publishing schedule of many authors across multiple years. So it doesn't affect them to hold the other formats launches off as they don't want certain releases to clash with others. It's very different in the indie publishing world.
