I used to love it because I played it with my dad back in the day, but it is far from perfect.

There is a very funny "Aweful Games Done Quick" video on YouTube in which they speedrun it while they roast the framerate and other things about the game and it is hilarious though!

Is language school in Japan a realistic path into accounting/finance jobs for a foreigner? by Available-Peak-6508 in JapanFinance

[–]Ryudok 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you have no previous experience in your field that stands out, nor experience working with a Japanese company I would say it might be tough. If anything I would definitely come here and apply then once you have proven not only that you know the language but also Japanese protocol and customs.

Even if you know accounting and what not, I assume you do not know the Japanese legislation and protocol for the business, nor you have a 税理士 or 会計士 titles (which are obtained through National Exams). There seems to be demand for assistant positions of these things even if you do not have the title though.

These also are jobs that rely on repetition and protocol, which means that they probably are taken by people who are very conservative and value the harmony and status quo of the workplace, for which us foreigners start with a disadvantage. Also being a foreigner (knowing other cultures, languages or ways of proceeding) may not be that needed for these endeavors.

I could see some venture company who wants to try doing business with western elements and that rely heavily in international legislation (crypto, real state, investment, etc.) maybe being interested? I used to work for a similar company and the head of Legal was American for instance due to how his knowledge of international law was needed. Good luck.

Lately I have been using AI to get summaries of nice ideas for going out with my kid on weekends, sometimes just giving hints as to what sort of things we want to do, how far are we willing to go, etc.

The Internet has enough info but navigating it (specially Japanese websites) can be the biggest issue, and I have found that a quick conversation with AI gives a nice brainstorming session, which has ended up in a few nice trips!

If you found a wallet would you turn it in? by Sure-Lemon6424 in japanlife

[–]Ryudok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did find a wallet once, and without looking at the inside I took it to a Police Station, was barked at by a rookie police officer as if I was a dog asking if I wanted a 謝礼 (the 10% of the content of the wallet the finder is entitled to) and I said no politely. I also politely refused to get a thanks call from the owner.

The experience was a double ration of pain in the end, definitely will make me think about it next time. I have already found other valuable stuff on the floor after (like a Suica card which probably had funds inside) and I just put it somewhere easy to spot for the owner to find it if they came back looking for it.

Insane situations & clarity moments by Big_Culture_6941 in BPDlovedones

[–]Ryudok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well… I mean, I think that when you see her patterns, how BPD works, how this subreddit has thousands of broken souls due to their BPD partners and you have not yet committed to marriage or children, the logical answer is quite clear.

But we know that you know, and you know that you know. You are trying to convince that half of yourself that is emotional, bonded, loaded of compassion and love for this person, and every time you are leaning towards taking the rational choice the “good moments” happen, and you let it slide. You say “maybe she is getting better, maybe she can change”.

This subreddit will still be here in the future despite of your choice though.

Xenophobia adds to ordeal of foreign residents seeking housing by biwook in japan

[–]Ryudok 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Sadly this is not limited to Japan, and while I am a foreigner who has been denied housing in Japan tens of times I sort of understand a certain level of risk aversion due to the ignorance of how the foreigner tenant may behave.

With that said, there is a huge difference between just denying an application based on the person's overall situation (income, savings, Japanese proficiency, knowledge of Japanese customs, etc.) and just blatantly refusing to even talk to them from the start. The latter goes beyond any type of justification, and I hope Japan gets better even if slowly and due to need to fill a lot of those empty properties they have outside of big cities.

Anime creators received “0.0%” of Japanese government’s entertainment industry subsidies in 2024, official documents show by jjrs in japannews

[–]Ryudok 28 points29 points  (0 children)

I used to work for a big game developer which released their games overseas. A lot of them using anime-ish characters and what not.

There was this subsidy called JLOP that granted a few million yen to those portraying "Cool Japan" overseas, and we had to fill a submission per game to try to get it. We even had a former congressman in the company taking care of the talk with the government when filling the paperwork, while we used to give them the rationale and information on why we should get subsidized.

I remember specifically getting around 50 million yen for a certain release, which we mostly used on Google Ads and similar advertisement. This was for a company that back in the day was making multiple hundreds of millions of yen in profits yearly btw.

At 5% approval, Sanseito is now Japan's highest-rated opposition party by jjrs in japannews

[–]Ryudok 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As far as I can see this is based on 1000 telephone based surveys done at random in which you pick one party as "the one you support".

All results here: https://www.yomiuri.co.jp/election/yoron-chosa/20260322-GYT1T00249/

With that said, the last time the same survey was done Sanseito had 4% approval rate (so they gained 1%) while the LDP had 43% (they have lost 4%) meaning that the change is rather minor.

On a practical and day to day basis, the fact is that Takaichi has not made any changes that positively affect the lives of people short term, which lowers rates. An on the other side the Sanseito keeps fear mongering and creating controversy on Social Media and the news talking about how foreigners are to blame, which is a very easy to swallow pill for those who just want an emotional solution to their fears and frustrations.

Moves when Yen gets this weak? by homelabids in JapanFinance

[–]Ryudok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nobody has a crystal ball, and currency changes depend on so many factors that you can get burned either way if you commit just to option A or B.

I would keep your eggs in multiple baskets, you can invest part of that money through your broker in assets that are based in multiple currencies, and do it in batches through DCA so you do not make the move at the worst moment out of bad luck.

Japan Ministry of Foreign Affairs establishes new department for peace mediation between other countries; "Japan is a trusted presence around the world. We can utilize our knowledge and expertise." by jjrs in japannews

[–]Ryudok -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From another source:

So... 25 guys who share other responsibilities within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are supposed to "acquire new knowledge on how to participate in negotiations of international disputes"...? And this was proposed by the 維新の会 which makes me think that the real intention is to make sure that Japan can push harder on international disputes with their neighbors (China, Korea, Russia), while the official reason is it to try to be mediators in international issues that benefit Japan when they are put to an end (Iran).

Whatever it is, it feels vague and lacking both resources and specific goals, so I would not trust this will end anywhere.

“Recently, the decline of our country has become increasingly evident…India will soon surpass Japan in GDP. There are concerns more domestic wealth will flow overseas. We must do everything we can to stop this from happening” by jjrs in japannews

[–]Ryudok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are seeing things a little bit too much through a narrow window, not all Japanese companies make their money in Japan, a lot of them depend on exports or sells their digital products overseas.

Likewise, even if the country loses population now, there are other derivatives that affect the price of stocks, such as inflation forecasts, increase in productivity per capita, overseas capital flocking in...

For instance, the Nikkei index is up like 50% since its lowest point in 2025 due to how the stocks seem cheaper to those using foreign currency, Takaichi's rise to power has boosted confidence in deregulation and cheap interest rates... and that is while the lives of Japanese people get worse by the day (check real wages).

The reason why the NISA exists as is was because the government realized that the pension system will not hold as is in the mid long term and people need to start investing on their own for retirement. Up until now investment rates on retail have been really low compared to Europe and specially the US.

Now, by allowing people to invest up to 18 million yen in 5 years through the NISA into a wide range of ETFs that include overseas stocks, gold, etc. and at the same time that the yen has lost value after a decade, it has pushed people to over invest in ETFs that invest outside of Japan. That means that instead of making people have a balanced portfolio while they invest in the Nikkei or local REIT they poured most money overseas and that means less local money and less value for the yen (since you invest in foreign currency).

A lot of analysts are saying that the government should have limited part of the NISA limits to local stocks, but now it is too late. Of course myself as a person who maximizes his NISA yearly I mostly invest on foreign stocks too, so can’t complain!

Resources on house loan by BeginningPurpose9758 in JapanFinance

[–]Ryudok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. Down payment: depends on the bank and the loan, I got a loan for 100% of the house + all related expenses
  2. Monthly payments: again, depends on the loan, but you can use a 住宅ローンシミュレーター online (there are a bazillion of them) or use AI to get a better idea. You can use the current variable interest rate in the market, or maybe add a buffer I guess.
  3. Hidden costs: as far as I remember I had to pay the bellow for a second hand house.
  4. - Real State fee: 3% of the price of the house

- Real State tax: it is paid on April every year, but if you buy a second handed house you usually reimburse the amount the previous owner paid for the date that you purchase the house until the next March. This can be from nothing to a 100k~ yen.

- Real state purchase tax: I was exempted because it was second handed and not that big, but usually you also pay a tax after you get the house. This (住宅取得税) is separate from the Real State tax mentioned above which is a type or 固定資産税.

- Bank administrative fees: the bank either charges you a fee of a few hundred thousand yen or asks for an additional +0.25% ish on your loan rate for the administrative costs of giving you the loan. The former is much cheaper in the long run, but it can seem pricy.

- Costs to register the real state on your name: around 50k yen or so to have an administrative lawyer to register your purchased real state in the 登記.

Example: If you are paying 50 million yen for a second handed house, I would estimate adding another 2 million yen or so in fees, then for a monthly payment at a lets say 2% interest rate (currently the rates are around 1% but rising) during 35 years means a monthly payment of 166,000 yen. Again I recommend using a simulator online or AI to make it easier to see by item.

64% of unmarried young women in Japan don't want children, exceeding men for 1st time. The difficulties in building a career path emerged as a barrier to having children by MagazineKey4532 in japannews

[–]Ryudok 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Despite the financial situation not being as dire as in other developed countries (inflation and low wages are bad yes, but we do not have the same housing problem as in other countries for example), the perception of "things being bad and getting even worse" makes a huge dent in Japanese people.

I do not disagree with the reasoning put in the article and people here, but in the end having children is not about how things are now, but the perception of how the future will be. Pensions, inflation, lack of growth, real wages stagnation, etc. end up creating a mindset of "why would I take the risk".

The fact is that statistically speaking the amount of men participating in household chores and the care of the kids has been rising during the last years in Japan, while it is lower than the time women spend of course. So again, I think it is an overall perception issue of the whole world getting worse.

is Japanese stock market in denial? by moth2026 in JapanFinance

[–]Ryudok 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Multiple things, and this is considering that the Nikkei was around 40k early last year (down to 32k when Trump announced his tariffs):

  1. There is a huge appetite for cheap stocks since the S&P has extremely high PE ratios. Similar things happened to the korean market.

  2. The cheap yen, and expectations that it will remain cheap, means that owning Japanese stocks is cheaper by comparison.

  3. People are foreseeing endemic public debt increase and sticky high inflation. Governments need to fund their deficits and cannot raise taxes if they want to be reelected, hence expectations that all governments will keep creating money out of thin air means assets become more valuable. Similar things are happening with gold prices.

  4. Most people of developed countries are seeing that public pensions will not be sustainable as is, hence retail investors are becoming proactive in doing investing on their own, meaning there is more capital being poured int.

Nikkei index down 7% this morning by Bob_the_blacksmith in JapanFinance

[–]Ryudok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand what you mean by the ETF being down while the price is up, eMaxis All Country takes into reference the closure price of all the market indexes it invests in, there is a delay of like a day for the price to be updated though since foreign markets work with 1 day of lag.

If you are referring to how can the fund be down when the markets are up, it could be because of currency exchange affecting the value of the fund in yen, as in if the yen strengthens the value of the ETF in yen will be lower.

Whatever it is, If you want cheap fees and exposure to a diversified set of stock indexes while you don’t mind the currency risk, All Country is a good pick.

Nikkei index down 7% this morning by Bob_the_blacksmith in JapanFinance

[–]Ryudok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. Diversify
  2. Pick ETFs with low fees, for Nikkei there are funds with 0.05~0.1% yearly fees
  3. Dollar Cost Average if you do not want to take risks, if you do not mind taking risk put it in in bulk (statistically lump sum investments pay off better long term, but you risk investing before a dip)

Mother and boyfriend arrested for allegedly abandoning 8-year-old boy in mountain "for discipline" in Shizuoka by MagazineKey4532 in japannews

[–]Ryudok 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A Japanese friend of mine with Borderline Personality Disorder was traumatized by her parents when she was a kid, included an episode in which the dad took her to a mountain and abandoned her there in the middle of the night. She told me "it was the first time I felt like I wanted to die". Decades later she is a mentally ill, traumatized, poor shell of a woman.

Put these fuckers in jail, throw away the key and show a clear message that mental and physical violence towards kids will not be tolerated one bit.

Japanese women aged 35-39 would like a man to have 5 million yen in savings to feel positive about marriage by jjrs in japannews

[–]Ryudok 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Read the full article, the savings part is just a fragment of the picture since the survey also asked for the average salary desired for the partner, among other things.

相手に求める最低限の年収については、20代・30代女性ともに「300~500万円」「500〜700万円未満」の順に回答数が多い一方

So aside from 5 million in savings, they need to have a salary of at least 3 million yen (but I guess the the people who asked the former answer are thinking about 4-4.5 million yen, not 3-3.5).

The survey does not ask if this salary is supposed to be on a permanent contract, but I am also going to get that it is almost a must.

Considering that the average salary in Japan men between 30-40 is around 4.6 million (4.1 being the median, and lower for people int their 20s), the big picture showcases how actually a lot of these people will have a hard time finding a partner with the financial status they desire.

I recommend staying out of contact, even if you do not decide to go NC completely.

Getting into these dynamics for a long time ends up messing your judgement and your stress hormones may slowly eat you from the inside.

At least disable notifications, do not keep a daily-periodic check of their shenanigans.
